Orienteering race 57:05 [4] 8.3 km (6:53 / km) +395m 5:33 / km
slept:7.0 shoes: Inov8 Oroc 340

EM League, Bramcote
a cross-country time trail, with a short orienteering course thrown in (a couple of tricky legs over the road and the challenge of concentrating while trying to move faster than usual)

didn't realize it was 1:7500 until after 7, when a fence corner came up much sooner than expected and I was already flying past, time losses mostly walking up hills, but ...

went around the slope on 22 came into a control on a crag, saw the SI box was missing, didn't see the number, at that exact moment the planner turned up behind me offering a new box, I punched and went on, turned out it wasn't my control (although my control was also a crag about 75m away)

5th (re-instated), 12+mins down on Richard Robinson, should get 950+ points, but beaten by Dai B (20secs)

DVO Local Event, Black Rocks
good little work out, the first three controls took us from the Trail almost to the trig point, more or less on the route of the fell race, made a mistake on the third because 'the' control was visible from a long way off on precisely the same line so ran the other side of the wall as the right control and thought 'how come this control is on a path', mostly running, but at least there was the option of going straight through the wood at this time of year

500m along a muddy/ice-covered path to the finish: 2.11

1st (which is always nice) - but only because Ben Crane must've run past the last control and had to go back

Orienteering warm up/down 42:00 [1] 3.65 km (11:30 / km) +150m 9:33 / km
shoes: inov8 Mudclaw 272

shadowed my niece around the Orange course, which meant going almost to the trig point again, mixture of running, walking and standing around

not a bad bit of forest today, flattered (flattened) by the snow, of course, and in the middle of it a standing stone or pillar ... felt like I'd found something I shouldn't have, something ancient. I was spooked.

Great control site.

that'll be Farley Moor again, still looking attractive in the snow, another promising section (rocks, clearings, and shooting stand), hoping the bramble doesn't suddenly rise from its grave like a zombie

Oker Loop
beautiful evening, the bitter East wind had dropped, time to start the routine again, but gently ...

turned out the first split was good, no problems getting to the top (but not fast either), the snow slowed the descent, felt a bit tight in the chest over the last 2km

running warm up/down 5:30 [1] 0.75 km (7:20 / km) +30m 6:07 / km
shoes: inov8 Mudclaw 272

jog back home

got six or seven packets of Farley yet to survey and I certainly wasn't going to be running today, so off I went, the place was looking great in the snow and the sunshine, and the bramble has been annihilated in places, although the runnability of the section was mostly light green due to extra growth between the pines

Orienteering race 42:15 [4] 6.5 km (6:30 / km) +285m 5:20 / km
shoes: Inov8 Oroc 340

JK Relays, Senior Men, Hambleden
lead man for DVO with JD injured, so was in the mass start with the big boys, didn't see them ...

long haul up the hill to number one was tough - the guy next to me sounded like he was dying, come to think of it I didn't see him finish? - all the hills were tough, in fact, kept my discipline throughout, unless you cound choosing to contour on the long leg instead of taking the straight line down and up the again, was never going to be the quicker route, but didn't seem to lose anything (in terms of leg place)

19th (on gaffle), 11mins behind Matthew Speake
