Orienteering race 1:14:25 [4] 9.5 km (7:50 / km) +210m 7:03 / km
shoes: Inov8 Oroc 340

JK Individual, Day 2, Cold Ash
felt good about the run until the other results started to pile up, pace was steady, better than last year, but I guess my policy of going straight, or trying to go straight, was mistaken:

8) didn't get much time to study this leg and didn't properly consider the left-hand options, plumped for straight to pick up the central path, but didn't exit at the correct angle, ended up effectively cutting the corner off the right-hand route, which would have been good if I hadn't bitten off a little extra and tried to cut another corner, I went in too soon and had to stop to make sure I got back on line [60secs+]
14) same here, saw the right-hand rail but ignored it in favour of a very enjoyable bash across the terrain [45secs+]
21) aimed off left, but the spur was much steeper than the map suggested so came right and saw depressions, hesitant - I notice a few lost time here and I imagine they encountered the same problem [<30secs]

27th (of 111), 14mins down on Jon Cross (first British human), just missing target (21st)

Orienteering race 1:08:14 [4] 10.0 km (6:49 / km) +425m 5:38 / km
shoes: Inov8 Oroc 340

JK Individual, Hambleden
pretty good run, but was walking up (parts of the) hills from 8 onwards, again pretty easy orienteering, so the small miss at 12 and the banana at 1 were disappointing

felt flat, as if I hadn't got my nutrition right: on day one, I had sanwiches for a very early lunch, this time I had a bigger breakfast (baked barley and bacon), but my energy peaked

1) 'drifted' right coming over the spur because I didn't point myself in the right direction coming out of the ride at the start [30secs]
5) liked my lefthand route, but haven't studied routegagdet yet - I know it had a few contours less climb than wide right and straight
12) not sure about map here and/or where the flag was hung, much too close to the main semi-open area, missed left [45secs]
18) possibly the best route was across the valley and down the ridge, but my time loss here will mostly have been pace (walking) up some of the hill [60secs]

24th (of 119), 10 behind Alan Velecky (first British human), made my arbitrary target of 20th Brit

Event: JK 2013

1 PM

Orienteering race (Sprint) 14:43 [5] 2.0 km (7:22 / km) +15m 7:06 / km
shoes: Saucony Peregrine

JK Sprint, Whiteknights
as anticipated it was too easy, mostly a toss up between left or right, still don't think I got enough of them right, set off fast and had to slow down because I was going too fast to orienteer (you can see my splits drop after that point), in retrospect I should've just gone for it, I had too much left in the tank: 4th fastest on final leg and a good sprint (despite excessive Emit pfaff saw me gain 5 places right at the end

hardly worth analysing, but:

4) ignored the canopy to swing around the left of the control, but the white bits of wood were not runnable and had to go much wider [20secs]
5) too long arsing about with Emit punch?
9) missed the way in on the left and got blocked by people getting into their car in the car park [10secs+]
13) went right, but didn't spot gap in hedge which made left the better choice [15secs]

19th (of 128), only 80 secs down on Dave Rollins (first British human)

but my position was improved by several runners missing their starts

running warm up/down 12:25 [3] 2.35 km (5:17 / km) +40m 4:52 / km

brisk run to the park warming up for intervals, threw a few hill diversions in on the way

running intervals 20:19 [5] 4.0 km (5:05 / km) +5m 5:03 / km

4 x 1km, 90 secs rest: 4.03 4.06 4.07 4.03

paths were clear, apart from one icy corner, which I had to steer aroun - I think that accounts for the slightly slower times this week - a sharpener for the JK really, 'cause all the work's been done ...

running warm up/down 7:44 [2] 1.37 km (5:39 / km) +20m 5:16 / km

brisk jog home
