running hills 2:02:10 [3] 18.78 km (6:30 / km) +535m 5:42 / km
shoes: Inov8 X-Talon 190

Grindleford, Longshaw, Blackamoor, Ox Stones, Higger Tor
longest run in this hemisphere, fairly easy pace as Paul had done 32km the day before, hips and buttocks complaining at the end, lovely conditions, sunny, but mild, saw a curlew

running 36:55 [3] 7.0 km (5:16 / km) +120m 4:51 / km
shoes: Inov8 Trailroc 245

Oker Loop
moderate, not exactly struggling but not moving well

Wednesday May 27, 2015 #

Note
(sick)

one of those 'washed out' days: enervated, empty, dark hollows around the eyes

Orienteering race 53:16 [5] 6.2 km (8:35 / km) +225m 7:16 / km
shoes: Inov8 Oroc 340

SINS Day 3, Corndon
another very enjoyable area and another collapse in form after about 35mins (and around 5km), struggled from that point and couldn't even be bothered to race to the finish with a guy from Devon whom I'd caught at #9, wish I had because I might just have snuck into 5th place

#2 missed 20m left and overshot [45]
#9 missed low, GPS trace has be bang on-line at the path, but I thought I was high because I'd stayed above some rocks, however, I had already descended enough, theexpected marsh didn't appear and nor did the crag, but the real mistake was to forge on by another 100+m, poor decision [3.5mins]

Orienteering race 59:23 [5] 6.6 km (9:00 / km) +245m 7:35 / km
shoes: Inov8 Oroc 340

SINS Day 2, Stapeley
I'll get straight to the point: I was knackered after 40mins and about 5.5km, very similiar to yesterday, for the rest of the course I was running on empty, walking on the hills

Haven't been in great form this season, since my return from Tasmania, so with 10 weeks to the Scottish Six day I have work to do

Orienteering 59:16 [3] 7.2 km (8:14 / km) +270m 6:56 / km
shoes: Jalas FLX

SINS Day 1, Brampton Bryan
good run, but ran out of steam after 35-40mins, lucky the last four or five were downhill

#4 good line to attackpoint but slightly left down the slope, unmapped veg boundary (but on previous map) gave me pause [20]
#6 misread control codes at 5, lost time before punching and then started navigating to #7, missed control right [40]
#8 hesitation in circle, lots of holly reducing visibility [20]
#12 got caught in some thick stuff, probably should have either continued on line of ride or skirted the top of the mid-green [20]

lost chunks of time on pace

4th, 4.5mins behind Andy Thorpe

Holmebrook Valley Country Park
map check on the run, mainly to assess the paths/tracks on Steve K's side, should they be paved or unpaved non-urban

Wednesday May 20, 2015 #

7 PM

running 50:36 [3] 9.81 km (5:09 / km) +130m 4:50 / km
shoes: Inov8 X-Talon 212

Stanton Moor Spirals
lovely evening, slow to start and didn't improve that much, hard work on the last climb to the trig

retiring the X-talon 212s tonight, after almost 900km, they've been good

Monday May 18, 2015 #

running 1:07:13 [2] 9.19 km (7:19 / km) +305m 6:16 / km

neglected to have an early tea and consequently felt underfuelled after about 30mins

Orienteering race (urban) 48:14 [5] 10.33 km (4:40 / km) +15m 4:38 / km
shoes: Mizuno Wave Ascend 7

Hull Urban
not as challenging as I'd hoped, ran well, trying to keep the pace up all the way

#1 struggle with the double-sided map and the wind, by the time I got it folded I had committed to the wrong route [15]
#9 hesitation at control about way out [5]
#18 alleyways difficult to spot in tight housing development [5]
#19 paused to check I hadn't run OOB - I hadn't [5]
#20 hesitation: neglected to check control descriptions [5]
#21 chose narrow lock bridge but encountered 'traffic', also traffic on the next road (a sunday market), plus pfaffed about fence around control site [20]
#28 hesitation: crossable walls weren't quite as expected [5]

4th, 3.20 behind Martin Ward, pretty standard result

2 PM

Mapping 1:40:00 [0] 3.0 km (33:20 / km)
shoes: Jalas FLX

surveying the southern part of the Birchen Edge extension, not much detail but a pleasant stretch of heath

4 PM

Orienteering 1:10:00 [1] 5.0 km (14:00 / km) +50m 13:20 / km
shoes: Jalas FLX

tagging some controls for November's event (before the bracken), developed another blister, this time on the left ankle, wearing different shoes, but the same socks

area looks different this time of year with no bracken at all, everything is so visible, including all the rocks I didn't map ...

running 1:05:05 [3] 12.44 km (5:14 / km) +160m 4:55 / km

better, but still not feeling strong, hips tight, very pleasant run though on the trods and trails, heard a cuckoo

running 27:59 [2] 5.35 km (5:14 / km) +70m 4:55 / km

Oker Loop (short)
blimey, that was a struggle, low energy, and felt very tight all over, maybe due a massage

Tuesday May 12, 2015 #

Note
(rest day)

tired, (probably would've done Burbage Skyline but didn't have use of the car)

1 PM

Orienteering race 41:04 [5] 4.9 km (8:23 / km) +140m 7:20 / km
shoes: Inov8 Oroc 340

British Middle Distance Champs, Naphill
not a clean run, nor quick (in fact, very 'steady' pace), but an okay result, helped by a few mispunches and a no-show

#1 hesitant as flag wasn't hung in the feature [10]
#6 given the runnability of the green, probably should've taken a bearing, but instead tried to use paths, very indistinct, wandered too far east and returned to path slowly [50]
#7 put off by bad tempered dog walker, my line drifted 10° right and ended up near path [40]
#9 again, couldn't read thickets, overshot slightly [20]
#16 by the time I checked the EMIT it had stopped flashing, went back to 'punch' again [30]
#17 climbed slightly too soon, saw pit, hesitant [10]
#18 confused by path above #17, but knew I would hit embankment to the left [10]
#19 hesitant [10]
#25 hmmm, climbed to line between the embankments, made sure I maintained or gained a little height after that, found dense holly thicket, then found the path, plumped for going up hill, control was a long way up on a feeble looking bit of holly [90]
#26 chose the path so I could run with confidence, but control too low and common to most courses [20]

9th, 9mins behind Bill, target was <5mins. :(

11 AM

Orienteering race (sprint) 17:32 [5] 3.3 km (5:19 / km) +30m 5:05 / km
shoes: Mizuno Wave Ascend 7

British Sprint Champs, Aldershot Garrison, Heat 3
solid run, steady pace, comfortable qualification

#18 got N/S reversed at map change, then changed my mind on the route and decided to climb the bank directly [20]
#19 went across the bridge, didn't spot the lefthand route [5]

2nd, 43secs behind Andy Munro, would've been 5th but Dave Peel and Ifor mispunched and Kev Fielding was DSQ

3 PM

Orienteering race 15:50 [5] 3.3 km (4:48 / km) +40m 4:31 / km
shoes: Mizuno Wave Ascend 7

British Sprint Champs, Aldershot Garrison, A Final
heavy legs, good route choice challenges here, got some right (#7, #11) and some wrong (#13, #15)

#2 hesitation as I plumped for going right [5]
#7 paused to assess routes, then got a shock when I thought I'd found a dead end - the crossable wall wasn't visible [20]
#13 didn't see the righthand route and plumped for familiar terrain, also went up steps when the grass would've been quicker [20]
#14 continued in direction I was facing, but should've turned around to go through the gap (was losing focus) [10]
#15 don't know why I opted for the righthand path through the wood, it was clearly slightly further [5]

9th, only 9secs from 6th place (dammit), although my target was to be within 3mins of the winner (i.e. James) and I managed that: 2mins 16secs

5 PM

running 30:21 [3] 6.0 km (5:04 / km) +100m 4:40 / km
shoes: Mizuno Wave Ascend 7

Streatham Common, Norwood Grove
easy run out to the common, the oak wood was looking lovely so I went through there three or four times

Monday May 4, 2015 #

running 46:54 [3] 8.88 km (5:17 / km) +150m 4:52 / km
shoes: Mizuno Wave Ascend 7

Gipsy Hill, Crystal Palace, Dulwich Woods
another brisk one, out to Dulwich Woods and back, through some estates and alleyways which really confused my sense of direction, missed one on the way - twice! - which slowed me down a tad, feeling reasonably strong

Saturday May 2, 2015 #

11 AM

running tempo 35:47 [4] 7.04 km (5:05 / km) +140m 4:37 / km
shoes: Inov8 X-Talon 212

Oker Loop
return of an old favourite, a very brisk run (tempo) before heading south to London, conditionals optimal, firm and cool, must be a pb, felt fresh, didn't struggle at all, just kept the foot on the pedal

no plaster on the blister, just thin socks and X-talon's, felt it, particularly on the steeper slopes
