Orienteering (Trail-O) 1:15:00 [0] 4.0 km (18:45 / km) +20m 18:18 / km
shoes: Mizuno Wave Ascend 7

Trail-O, Culbin East
figured I've missed my chance for WOC 2015 selection so broke the embargo at Culbin East for the trail-O

It was absorbing, very like mapping, but having to stay on the paths was profoundly frustrating. I wanted to navigate on the run and in terrain. With this restriction and the silence, it should be call Museum-O.

Three mistakes: one where the map was a bit odd and I got fed up of scratching my head, another which most people got wrong as well, and one which was just careless.

And yet I came third. Hee-hee. Shouldn't I get a mug and a stick of rock for that?

Orienteering race 1:04:53 [4] 8.2 km (7:55 / km) +80m 7:33 / km
shoes: Inov8 Oroc 340

Scottish 6 Days, Culbin
fairly good run, but should've done better, again not as technical as it could have been - more track running than expected, warm day

took it steady to the first and was caught by Chappers (-1) approaching 2, stuck with him (kept him in sight) until leaving 6, saw him ahead on the beach, caught by Bill at 16, used him to keep my pace up on the track, this probably took me over the edge physically

1) took a safer line into the green attacking from hill [20secs]
7) hesitant, the ground didn't quite fit the map, though I was in the right place [10secs]
10) up to the ridge/edge of semi-open and along, but got lazy thinking I couldn't miss ... had to loop back when the veg boundary loomed up ahead [90secs+]
18) should've aimed at the little ridge and I knew it, but tried to go straighter and slid left looking too early [80secs]
20) like many I ran at the wide ride and went over it without noticing, noticed the hill though and adjusted [20secs]

25th, 16mins behind JL

Orienteering race 1:16:28 [4] 9.1 km (8:24 / km) +25m 8:17 / km
shoes: inov8 Mudclaw 272

Scottish 6 Days, Carse of Ardersier
another good run, on a reasonably straightforward course, but ... I hit the wall on 27 and my brain melted, the going was tougher than expected, caught by Mats Andersson (-4) at 16, but stayed with him (and got ahead) all the way to 26, should've jogged along the paths to 28 and lost 1min instead of 2 getting confused and falling over in the forest

29th, 20mins down on JL, not a day to have an early start

Sunday Jul 28, 2013 #

2 PM

Orienteering race 55:33 [4] 7.7 km (7:13 / km) +65m 6:55 / km
shoes: Inov8 Oroc 340

Scottish 6 Days, Lossie
good run, but the course didn't offer the technical challenge I had expected and the very late start didn't offer much benefit, apart from the tracks to the last control, which gave me my best split of the week (3rd), caught by Chas (-3) on the way to 11, quite pleased by that

2) slowed the pace after hitting 1 earlier than expected, getting used to the scale [10]
3/4) slow, giving the area too much respect [20]
9) went straight but got greedy and cut across the semi-open, it was rough and I emerged slightly disoriented and knocked off line, stumbled on across the white, hitting the track too far left, good line into control [60secs]
13) crossed the ridge lower than intended, confused by paths on the other side, paused to re-locate [40secs]
14) went south out of control, better line would've been left to pick up the path [20]

20th, only 9mins behind Steve Birkinshaw

turned out to be the best result of the week: quite a few of the better runners lost time, in particular on 16 in the green, where my use of the gorse and careful compass work paid off

8 PM

running (terrain and trails) 27:02 [4] 4.68 km (5:47 / km) +95m 5:15 / km
shoes: Saucony Peregrine

Stanton Moor
quick blast on the moor with the 1:10 map from the British, slowed down by the bracken on the edge of the quarries, but the heather in the woods didn't stop me, oh no

Tuesday Jul 23, 2013 #

Note
(rest day)

Well, there it is: possibly the most ridiculous ranking score I've ever seen. I'm the beneficiary, but that only makes it worse. 1343. Only guys in the top 40 get these kind of scores. Of course, it was at an urban event too.

http://www.britishorienteering.org.uk/index.php?pg...;

up-date: after Frances Alexander became Andrew Yeates, my score fell by 58 points to 1285, no longer ridiculous, but still an overly-generous award

Mapping 2:00:00 [0] 4.0 km (30:00 / km) +40m 28:34 / km
shoes: Inov8 Oroc 340

back to Birchen Edge to tramp the marshes in the wide shallow valley beyond the edge while they are (were) still dry

(I shall name this area the 'slough of despond' - everything is a bit vague in there)

6 PM

running 1:15:19 [2] 11.51 km (6:33 / km) +250m 5:54 / km
shoes: Mizuno Wave Ascend 7

Crich, Fritchley, Wingfield Manor, Moorwood Moor
very warm, but at least the pace was quite steady - gentle, but steady, put in an effort on the hills, then waited for the others, until the last climbs where the route was pretty obvious and I carried on alone

Sunday Jul 21, 2013 #

10 AM

Orienteering race (urban) 34:44 [5] 7.63 km (4:33 / km) +120m 4:13 / km
shoes: Mizuno Wave Ascend 7

Buxton Urban Race
clean run, solid route choice, good pace (course length 5.8km)

1st, but probably should've run men's open - that was a better quality field (Richard Robinson, Alistair Buckley, Stephen Lang, John Duckworth)

Friday Jul 19, 2013 #

5 PM

Mapping 2:00:00 [0] 5.0 km (24:00 / km) +50m 22:51 / km
shoes: Inov8 Oroc 340

thought I'd visit some of the marshes on the north slope at Birchen Edge while they're dry ... (I won't be visiting again) ... but I did find some unexpected detail in the woods in the north east corner

7 PM

running 55:12 [3] 10.12 km (5:27 / km) +220m 4:55 / km
shoes: Mizuno Wave Ascend 7

The Edges (White, Froggatt, Curbar)
good pace today, despite a slight headwind at the top, very dry, of course, no dancing around marshy ground, fastest time on this route

5 PM

Orienteering 1:00:00 [1] 4.0 km (15:00 / km) +30m 14:27 / km
shoes: Saucony Peregrine

hanging/checking controls on Stanton Moor, ran occasionally, when the load got easier, love threading my way through low heather and bilberry, bees were buzzing all over the place

Tuesday Jul 16, 2013 #

running warm up/down 4:50 [2] 0.73 km (6:37 / km) +30m 5:30 / km
shoes: Saucony Peregrine

jog from car park to trig point before test running the Light Green

7 PM

Orienteering 26:00 [3] 2.8 km (9:17 / km) +60m 8:23 / km
shoes: Saucony Peregrine

Stanton Moor
went out to run the mini-Light Green course I've planned for tomorrow evening's 'end of term' activity, bracken around two control sites, copse/semi-open confusion at another, the area around 5 and 6 on the British Middle distance course has now, shall we say, regenerated, tough to get through there - some re-planning required

stopped the Garmin when I started and started it when I finished so distance is the straight line

Monday Jul 15, 2013 #

6 PM

running 1:22:33 [2] 10.02 km (8:14 / km) +425m 6:48 / km
shoes: Mizuno Wave Ascend 7

Hulme End Loop: Wetton Hill, Ecton Hill
hmmm, first half of this was nice and steady, but too much walking (straight up steep hills) - is there any point in this? - and had to wait for over a minute at one point and cross an electrified fence at another, good pace up to Ecton and then round the Manifold Trail back to the pub

not too warm and great views

Sunday Jul 14, 2013 #

10 AM

Orienteering race 1:06:51 [4] 9.8 km (6:49 / km) +130m 6:24 / km
shoes: inov8 Mudclaw 272

WM League, Sutton Park
good course, but damn it was hot, good flow until the railway crossing, started to fade after 30mins, wilted after 45, lost time on two legs by not going round the paths and I knew it at the time! (I wanted the challenge)

4th, behind Preston, Taunton and Guillame (leading after 10)

Saturday Jul 13, 2013 #

9 AM

running ((park run)) 20:57 [5] 5.0 km (4:11 / km) +30m 4:04 / km
shoes: Mizuno Wave Ascend 7

Whitworth Thread
my first park run, not a fast route, lots of bends and about 30m of climb, and I was running on my own after the first km, started too fast (of course), then settled down, had a bit left at the end, target was 21mins, beat it, next time will be better

quicker than 4:15 p/km continuous: that means I should be doing 4 minute kms or less in the interval sessions

Thursday Jul 11, 2013 #

8 PM

running 36:31 [4] 6.99 km (5:13 / km) +140m 4:45 / km
shoes: Saucony Peregrine

Oker Loop
for some reason all my old routes from home don't appeal, only Oker late on a summer's evening will do, good pace throughout, would've improved on my best time if hadn't slipped on my arse and banged my head

need to run at this pace for 10km

Tuesday Jul 9, 2013 #

7 PM

Orienteering race 23:37 [4] 4.5 km (5:15 / km)
shoes: Mizuno Wave Ascend 7

Dulwich Park, London Summer Series
pretty easy navigation, just the question of whether "do not cross any fences" really did apply to the fences marked as crossable: saw someone hopping over one early on

good work out though (5km)

running 17:50 [2] 3.28 km (5:26 / km) +30m 5:12 / km
shoes: Mizuno Wave Ascend 7

jog back from Dulwich

Sunday Jul 7, 2013 #

8 AM

running 24:03 [3] 4.52 km (5:19 / km) +90m 4:50 / km
shoes: Mizuno Wave Ascend 7

Gipsy Hill, Crystal Palace Park
quick one (as in short) before we went out for the morning, nice climb through the Central Hill Estate, hot in the park

Thursday Jul 4, 2013 #

4 PM

Mapping 1:30:00 [0] 2.5 km (36:00 / km) +30m 33:58 / km
shoes: Saucony Peregrine

investigating another area of bracken over to the east, some contour detail and plenty of rocks, bracken thick in one patch

8 PM

running tempo 36:43 [4] 6.99 km (5:15 / km) +140m 4:46 / km
shoes: Mizuno Wave Ascend 7

Oker Loop
had to leave the Edges to return the car to my father - that was tough - so waited till the sun was low over Oker and went for a quick one

Wednesday Jul 3, 2013 #

Note
(rest day)

two poor nights of sleep, feeling washed out, another day of rest, I think

Monday Jul 1, 2013 #

6 PM

running 1:25:38 [2] 13.32 km (6:26 / km) +360m 5:40 / km
shoes: Mizuno Wave Ascend 7

Robin Hood's Stride, Stanton Moor, Shiningbank Quarry
good run from Youlgreave, paused to climb around on the Stride and the Rowtor Rocks (?), I ran off path in Stanton cause I couldn't resist - would've preferred to do a loop around there and back the way we came

definitely found a bit harder than earlier last month, but not too hard

no niggles
