Note
(sick) (rest day)

been carrying a bit of a cold, plus a few 'niggles' so decided against a run today - it was only going to be an easy one anyway

(this decision has nothing to do with the fact that it's raining)

7 PM

running 1:05:43 [3] 12.48 km (5:16 / km) +50m 5:10 / km
shoes: Saucony Peregrine

Longside Moor, Harewood Moor, Flash Lane, Farley Hill
had to force myself out there, despite the promise of some evening sunshine, left it slightly late in the end

tough to get up to pace, but now I see the middle section was the fastest of the three times I've done the route, and was going quite well at the end

Sunday Aug 26, 2012 #

7 PM

running 37:48 [4] 6.7 km (5:39 / km) +100m 5:15 / km
shoes: inov8 Mudclaw 272

Oaker Loop
haven't done this route since April, thought I'd give it a good go, particularly as I've drawn up a map of the area (yes, another map) and I wanted to check a few things

felt good and kept it going nicely up the ridge, but was over a minute short of my best times (last September and April), which I can't explain at all

Friday Aug 24, 2012 #

7 PM

running warm up/down 15:28 [2] 2.44 km (6:20 / km) +25m 6:02 / km

steady run across the Bank, with a quick, erm, comfort break, as warm up for intervals by the Derwent

running intervals 20:45 [4] 5.0 km (4:09 / km) +10m 4:07 / km

5 x 1km, with 2mins rest: 4.09 4.13 4.07 4.14 4.02

the Garmin failed to charged properly so I couldn't see my split times but from what I could estimate these were slightly slower than the last outing, didn't really hit the right intensity until the end, instead of doing a quicker one to finish, I should have done another two at the same pace

(no problem with my 'sore' heel - it's downhill where the problem occurs)

running warm up/down 6:42 [1] 1.0 mi (6:42 / mi) +20m 6:19 / mi

jog back home after intervals, didn't quite beat the rain

Wednesday Aug 22, 2012 #

7 PM

running 1:07:26 [3] 11.07 km (6:05 / km) +220m 5:32 / km
shoes: Saucony Peregrine

Robin Hood's Stride, Clough Lane, Oaker
started a base map of the access land at Robin Hood's Stride, west of Birchover, and worked out I could take a run around there and make it all the way home

the pace was slow in the first third as I poked around the area - the bracken! - but pretty steady as I started out for home, pushed a bit harder in the last third

could feel the niggle in my right heel on the short stretches on the roads

Orienteering 54:09 [3] 7.17 km (7:33 / km) +130m 6:55 / km
shoes: Saucony Peregrine

Birchen Edge & Gardom's Edge
another run around on my new map this time investigating the Stone Age stuff around Gardom's Edge, chugged through the heather and tussocks behind Birchen, up the hill and then down almost to the Sheffield Road, then circling back to Gardom's Edge in the low evening sunshine, where I indulged in a strange practice of searching for the locations marked by red dots on a mpa, like orienteering

never really picked up much speed, but only slowed to a walk twice, in the marshes

found the fibreglass rock

Sunday Aug 19, 2012 #

5 PM

running 27:43 [3] 5.06 km (5:29 / km) +130m 4:51 / km
shoes: Saucony Peregrine

Oaker Loop (short)
the sore heel thing has flared up again, reckon it's something to do with turning the ankle and straining some muscles on the opposite side, needed to get out for a jaunt anyway, so tried to do a quick loop of Oaker before dinner

thought I started off pretty quick, but was way off the pace at the first split, must've been fooled by the heat

good to get out

Orienteering 50:52 [3] 7.36 km (6:55 / km) +65m 6:37 / km
shoes: inov8 Mudclaw 272

Leash Fern, Blake Brook, Birchen Edge
for my own amusement, I've been working on a base map for Birchen Edge, the area south of Big Moor, finally got a lift up there to take a run around, more a terrain work out than orienteering really

made good progress around the north east edge, but down by Blake Brook got mired in a tussocky marsh, better across the road towards Birchen Edge, but encountered more marsh than expected all the way up the valley, and a small herd of longhorn's, almost trod on a grouse

Wednesday Aug 15, 2012 #

6 PM

running 1:03:38 [3] 10.5 km (6:04 / km) +300m 5:18 / km
shoes: Saucony Peregrine

Matlock Bath, Heights of Abraham, Jughole
the rain had passed and I wanted to make it to the PO for last post so decided to do the route above Matlock Bath and under Masson Hill

plenty of climb on this one and the trails were greasy after the rain, coming straight down the hill from the Jughole was silly, not sure I'll do that again

good steady running though

Monday Aug 13, 2012 #

6 PM

running warm up/down 15:21 [2] 2.72 km (5:39 / km) +20m 5:27 / km

Matlock Bank
up to the Council Buildings on my way to the river for intervals

running intervals 20:30 [4] 5.0 km (4:06 / km) +5m 4:05 / km

5 x 1km, 2mins rest: 4.04 4.10 4.04 4.11 4.01

little bit laboured today, but again might just have been able to squeeze out another, think I'll have to grit my teeth and keep the pace higher next time

running warm up/down 7:00 [2] 1.1 km (6:22 / km) +10m 6:05 / km

jog back after intervals

Saturday Aug 11, 2012 #

7 PM

running 1:07:41 [3] 12.0 km (5:38 / km) +110m 5:24 / km

Matlock Bank, Upper Lumsdale, Tansley Moor
nice steady one, meat and potatoes, but further than planned, opened out on the way back as it was mostly downhill

Thursday Aug 9, 2012 #

running race 40:08 [5] 7.21 km (5:34 / km) +240m 4:46 / km
shoes: Saucony Peregrine

'Ricky's Race', Darley Bridge
had to compete in this as I've run most of the route in one direction or another: Clough Wood, Oaker Hill

felt much better than I had for the race at Black Rocks last month, had a bit of a cold back then and I think the slower terrain - trails as opposed to hard tracks - helped, passed a fair few runners on the long ascent, but had two big lads bounce by on the way down, ended up racing the fourth placed woman for the rest of the way, she ran up the steep climb at Oaker and was out of sight until I put in an effort on the last little climb and caught her by the time we crossed the final stile

the right ankle was sore on the descent thru Clough Wood, going to have to strap it for the next few outings

59th out of 127, 10minutes back

Tuesday Aug 7, 2012 #

7 PM

running long 1:22:59 [3] 15.15 km (5:29 / km) +160m 5:12 / km
shoes: Saucony Peregrine

Longside Moor, Harewood Moor, Uppertown, Farley Hill
the longest training run I've ever done: got myself dropped off on the top and ran back the longer route via the access land and ponds near Stone Edge, then across the valley through Uppertown

had trouble following the paths across the farm land (hate those paths) and the one going up the hill from Shooters Leas had been cut through head high bracken, this slowed me up a bit, apart from that felt pretty good

going to feel it in the joints tomorrow

Sunday Aug 5, 2012 #

7 PM

running warm up/down 19:41 [2] 3.43 km (5:44 / km) +35m 5:28 / km

Matlock Bank
warm up for the intervals while checking some details on the urban map - missed the trees lining one road

running intervals 20:13 [4] 5.0 km (4:03 / km)

5 x 1km, 2mins rest: 4.05 4.07 4.01 4.07 3.57

so this time I actually did manage to do five intervals, but I could and should have done one more, think the longer warm up helped

running warm up/down 5:18 [1] 0.88 km (6:01 / km) +10m 5:42 / km

easy jog home after intervals

Note

Two years since I took up orienteering again and two years since I started training. I've come a long way in terms of fitness, but last week's hard labour in mid-Wales proves I haven't come nearly far enough.

So what next? What's the target? And how do I get there?

Nothing much this Autumn. Next year, the pick has to be the Scottish Six Days with three forest dune areas. JK and BOC are also in fast, though less technical Southern areas. We've got the Middle Distance race across the valley.

Anything else?

Note
(rest day)

to be honest, the old body feels a bit tired, didn't even fancy the walk home from my sister's house

Thursday Aug 2, 2012 #

running 48:00 [3] 8.49 km (5:39 / km) +195m 5:04 / km
shoes: Saucony Peregrine

New Oaker Loop
found the right path this time so the new longer loop of Oaker is go, what wasn't 'go' was my body, after two days off I'd decided to do a brisk one (tempo, if you will), but almost bailed out of the climb to the summit, pleased with myself for sticking at it, and managed it fine, as it turned out

sun came out to play, but so did the flies and bugs on the path by the railway, got dozens in my hair, several on my eyeballs, but none in my mouth, fortunately
