Note
(rest day)

a year ago today I broke an hour for the first time in a training run (partly due to walking at the top of Farley Hill and up the bramble-covered slope to Lumsdale), so it has to be a long run tomorrow to see how I've improved ...

Wednesday May 30, 2012 #

7 PM

Orienteering race (rural) 50:38 [3] 8.6 km (5:53 / km) +80m 5:38 / km

Ambergate 'Rural-O'
not a bad work out, always good to combine running and navigating, but those open-source maps ...

had to pause to look for 2 - missing - and 5 - under the bridge but on the other side of the water, and 9 - a road that was marked as a path

Monday May 28, 2012 #

7 PM

running 38:56 [3] 7.5 km (5:11 / km) +100m 4:52 / km

Farley Hill, Ladygrove, the Meadow
this route must be cursed, I've only managed to complete once, either feeling sick, depleted, or a flat battery on the Garmin, today it was the former two, next time I'm just going to have to run through it

tried a variation today which would have been more picturesque, following the east bank of the Derwent, pulled up as I arrived at that point, the pace had been pretty decent until then though

10 AM

Orienteering race 29:52 [4] 6.1 km (4:54 / km) +100m 4:32 / km

Urban Race, Buxton
good little course, no misses, didn't use an underpass in the park because it wasn't on the map (too narrow to be shown properly), but can only have lost a couple of seconds, probably leaked a handful more with two slightly sub-optimal routes, ran quite well, managed under 5mins per km

3mins behind Alastair Buckley and 1min behind Mark Chapman, not bad

Friday May 25, 2012 #

7 PM

running 53:43 [3] 9.71 km (5:32 / km) +260m 4:53 / km

Farley Hill, Upper Lumsdale, Tansley, Matlock Bank
an approximation of the old route with less meandering in the woods and a little more climb going back up Lumsdale instead of across Hurst Farm

steady, drank half a bottle of isotonic 30mins before and almost developed a stitch, but it never came, shins and calfs complaining a bit

a long way better than May last year

7 PM

running 27:51 [3] 5.16 km (5:24 / km) +130m 4:48 / km
shoes: inov8 Mudclaw 272

Oaker Loop (short)
really must decide whether it's going to be short or long before I leave the house so I don't allow myself to cop out when I get to the turning ... at least I tried going up the ridge today, not sure what happened, the weather?

Orienteering 29:45 [3] 3.0 km (9:55 / km) +75m 8:49 / km
shoes: inov8 Mudclaw 272

Buxton O-Club, Grinlow Woods
a technical course around the contour-rich, dense woodland above Buxton - 'technical' because the paths had been removed from the map, only realised this as I left the start and puzzled about where the paths had gone, the hardest part was using/ignoring the paths, this led me astray on the second leg, when I left the path that would have led directly to the control because it seemed to be losing height, relocation wasn't helped by unmapped ruined walls (lost 2+ mins)

a short course, but with some stern climbs, making it a good physical challenge as well

7 PM

Orienteering 22:45 [3] 2.92 km (7:47 / km) +75m 6:54 / km
shoes: inov8 Mudclaw 272

went round the light green course to get some distance into the evening, most legs were the same as the technical, which gave me an idea of how much time I'd lost, physically felt almost as good as the first time around

Monday May 21, 2012 #

7 PM

running 57:04 [3] 10.03 km (5:41 / km) +225m 5:07 / km

Farley Hill, Lumsdale, Matlock Green, the Derwent
extension to the new route, all the way up into the pine woods of Upper Lumsdale (it's beautiful up there on a sunny evening) and then down to the edge of Tansley, taking the middle path back to Lumsdale and then around the hill to the Derwent = 10km, exactly what I was aiming for

quicker up Farley today (22secs), but pace slowed after the half hour mark, due in part to the number of stiles on that middle path, felt sick for the last two kms

Orienteering race 1:02:13 [4] *** 9.7 km (6:25 / km) +260m 5:39 / km
spiked:21/22c shoes: inov8 Mudclaw 272

EMOA League, Bradgate Country Park
nice area, rough grass, low bracken, hills and crags, but the visibility made the orienteering pretty easy, point yourself in the right direction and run, job done, but after 14 (halfway) started to struggle, a long leg with the flag visible from the last control, dead running uphill, lost a minute on the field there

10th, almost 10 mins down on Angus Shedden of LEI

Friday May 18, 2012 #

Note

went back to Lumsdale with sister and brother-in-law to walk the dog, got a chance to do a quick 'survey of the edge of the new map, also got bitten by a dog, luckily the teeth only scraped the surface of my calf, leaving a nice big bruise

Thursday May 17, 2012 #

Note

It's been a year since I began logging my training on Attackpoint. Also a year since I arrived in Matlock. Boy, were those first runs slow.

If it hadn't been for Saturday's debacle, I'd have been confident of having made significant progress. I tackled Farley Hill without too much trouble this evening. Couldn't do that this time last year. I used get quite sleepy after a good run, not so much these days. Recovery is better.

More fatigue in the feet and lower legs.

6 PM

running 52:04 [3] 9.37 km (5:33 / km) +210m 5:00 / km

Farley Hill, Lumsdale, Matlock Green, the Derwent
another jaunt to Lumsdale, but with good old Farley Hill at the start, didn't fly up it, but this time last year I would have pulled up before the 'summit', so pleased with that progress, kept it going quite well and pushed towards the end, although my pace probably slowed in places as I eyeballed the terrain for new or distinct features

Tuesday May 15, 2012 #

8 PM

running 36:57 [3] 6.8 km (5:26 / km) +110m 5:02 / km

Matlock Centre, Hurst Farm Estate, Matlock Bank
left it late today, couldn't stop tinkering with the Urban map, but the skies had cleared and I thought a brisk trip to the far end of the area would do me good, no problems

bit disappointed I didn't break 5mins p/km though

Monday May 14, 2012 #

2 PM

running 41:58 [3] 7.47 km (5:37 / km) +160m 5:04 / km

Matlock Bank, Hurst Farm Estate
I'm considering including the area east of the Chesterfield Road for the urban race map so I thought I'd better have a dander over there - it's been a while and I could get forty minutes of running with a bit of climb, felt pretty fragile at the start so the tempo was moderate, but at least I kept it going.

the area should be good: you could get a bit lost in there, moving from scrubland to housing estate and back, a few point features too, but also more than a few scroats and their dogs

substantial more mapping time required

Saturday May 12, 2012 #

1 PM

running 1:14:59 [3] 12.31 km (6:05 / km) +230m 5:34 / km

Matlock Bank, Bottom Moor, Jaggers Lane, Farley Lane
oh dear, that wasn't good, plodded up to Bottom Moor and then ground to a halt, heavy legs, nothing from the engine, worse, I couldn't get started up again, even the gentle climbs were hard going

I said something about mental strength yesterday ...

Friday May 11, 2012 #

6 PM

running 26:41 [3] 5.09 km (5:15 / km) +60m 4:57 / km
shoes: inov8 Mudclaw 272

Oaker Loop (short)
set off quite briskly but eased off a bit (had to squeeze past a herd of cows), lengthened the stride for the last km

think I need to build up the miles slowly again, but not sure what my next target will be - Croeso? - whatever it is eventually I'm gonna have to toughen up mentally as well

Thursday May 10, 2012 #

6 PM

running 13:08 [2] 2.58 km (5:05 / km) +60m 4:34 / km

Morledge Estate
was still feeling off, and the gum still hasn't healed, but when the rain stopped around 5pm, I knew I had to get out, as a gesture as much as anything ...

... and that's all it was, a gesture, an easy trot around the block, into the new estate, then back 'cause I'd already put a chicken in the oven

Wednesday May 9, 2012 #

Note
(sick)

came down with a bit of a cold late afternoon, decided to listen to the old body and rested up
seem to get more colds than I used to ...

11 AM

Orienteering race 52:28 [5] 6.6 km (7:57 / km) +145m 7:10 / km

Kendall Urban Race
very good urban race, fairly good run

started too fast, found the first with no more than a glance at the map, should've been more careful on 2, when I approached the control having no idea what I was looking for and got put off by Craig Blackford bouncing around up the steps looking for the way out, I went up the steps, but the control was on the 'ground', fortunately, I ignored Craig and found the gate, settle down after that, but still I think I made a poor route choice on the very long 4th leg ...

... but that's hard to determine given how inferior my pace was compared with so many of the others, the good news is I kept it going most of the way (ran 9.1km)

bit annoyed at the way the magnetic north line made the building at 14 seem passable and how some yards were mapped as passageways, even though they were closed off by gates and would have led straight into businesses (OOBs) - I'm talking about the penultimate control

27th, another steady, midfield performance

Orienteering race 33:49 [5] *** 5.06 km (6:41 / km) +165m 5:45 / km
spiked:19/19c shoes: inov8 Mudclaw 272

British Relay Champs, Helsington Burrows, Veteran M40+
another steady run, no mistakes, apart from a conservative route choice on our long second leg (but this can only have cost 15-20 secs, if that)

again, not very fast, got over taken by Zoe Harding on the way to the first wall crossing, she was a beat faster than me, but visibility was so good she rarely got out of sight: she kept me honest. In fact she passed me again at 14, after having made a mistake on the tricky 13th

would've been 5mins down on Dave Peel, if he hadn't mispunched

Event: BOC 2012

2 PM

Orienteering race 1:41:55 [5] 10.62 km (9:36 / km) +535m 7:40 / km
shoes: inov8 Mudclaw 272

British Champs, Dalegarth
pretty clean run (nice straight line on Splitbrowser), but very slow pace

been feeling very tired with the combination of lecturing and the tooth extraction, but felt okay on the day, until I started running, it was run a bit walk a bit, all the way ...

... and it was a long way: I ran 12.24km on a course mostly on open fell with mostly straight routes

15th (out of 28 runners) missing top half by 15secs :(

*pleased to note that Hector Haines picked the same route as me on the long leg and if I hadn't stopped for a few drinks he'd only have been 4mins faster
