Orienteering race 1:29:20 [5] 11.58 km (7:43 / km) +255m 6:57 / km
shoes: Inov8 X-Talon 212

BOC Brown Clee Hill
enjoyed the course (though it adhered to middle-distance guidelines and was over-planned) and the area, apart from the felling/windblown, but an average performance with an average result, saw the times of Musty and Daniel Gooch before I started so went out prepared for a long one, felt slow but got stronger, over 9mins of time loss

disappointed with compass work: nailed 1-3, but ignored my bearing on 4, went right on 7, but had a thorn copse to relocate from, then when I followed my bearing uphill on 11, I oveshot by twice the distance, going past the control but my eyes were aiming forward

a couple of control were tucked out of sight, #12, for example, where I reached the mouth of the shallow re-entrant, but couldn't see a wet pit or a flag at the end of it, lack of confidence led to slowly looping around to the back of it

16th, 17mins behind Bill, 2secs behind Jon Cross and 12s behind Daniel Gooch

Stapleford
no run today after surveying but I did walk 15km so perhaps there was enough exercise

strange how some areas previously mapped with undergrowth screen have swapped with neighbouring areas, is the bramble moving?
saw a very big hare, would've been some good eating, and a young deer, likewise

shoes: Inov8 Race Ultra 290

Parwich, Tissington, Alsop en le Dale
about the right distance for a monday night, after a weekend's races, steady pace, felt okay

one of the muscles in the right quad was a bit sore this afternoon, didn't feel it on the run, but it's a bit worse now

Orienteering race 42:00 [5] 7.43 km (5:39 / km) +80m 5:22 / km
shoes: Jalas FLX

EM League, Calke Park, Blue
better today, started to struggle a bit after 25mins not 15, pretty easy and very fast terrain, no real time losses apart from probably not picking the best line through the grot to #9

3rd, 1min 20 behind Karl Marshall

Saturday Apr 23, 2016 #

Orienteering race 50:02 [5] 8.17 km (6:07 / km) +65m 5:53 / km
shoes: Inov8 mudclaw 300

EM League Hanging Hill, Blue
felt the effects of yesterday's poor health, struggled after 15mins, which accounts for the error of visiting 18 before 17, no other problems, apart from another tricky fence crossing

1st, just ahead of Nick Jarvis, but deprived of the 1000 points by an M80 from LEI (the mistake at 17 cost me)

Friday Apr 22, 2016 #

Note
(sick)

off-colour, slight stomach upset or something, tired, so opted not to run

Beggarswell Wood (Shining Cliff), the wood in the extreme south where they had the finish for the British Champs 1982, overgrown with bracken these days

new loop parking at Sitch's Plantation, clockwise on road, rough trails and some heather, not as hilly as I had imagined, took another look at the the terrain below Fallinge Edge, good orienteering to be had there

Saturday Apr 16, 2016 #

running intervals 8:40 [5] 2.0 km (4:20 / km) +10m 4:14 / km
shoes: Inov8 Race Ultra 290

Shining Cliff, or Peat Pit Woods, to be exact, better than expected in there, map is going to going to look quite different in places, for example, you can't draw a moss-covered boulder less than 2m wide with the cliff symbol, not according to ISOM or me

6 PM

Core Conditioning 25:00 [1]

KV's core-conditioning, lower body and hip stretches

Monday Apr 11, 2016 #

6 PM

running 1:18:10 [2] 12.02 km (6:30 / km) +300m 5:47 / km
shoes: Inov8 X-Talon 212

Copy Wood, Northwood, Fallinge Edge
very nice route from the Shalimar on the A6, the paths weren't (too) muddy, woods were attractive and new angle on familiar landmarks from the trig point, bit sluggish to start but pretty strong after that

11 AM

Orienteering race 49:33 [5] 8.18 km (6:03 / km) +70m 5:49 / km
shoes: Inov8 mudclaw 300

EM League, Spring Cottage, Blue
knew this would be grotty and muddy, no surprises, mapping of bramble thickets was probably out of date (they've spread), took some daring route choices through the shades of green, lost time struggling to climb a fence

#5 started out a bit left then forced further by bramble [20]
#9 surely better to have headed to the track earlier [30]
#12 map hard to read here, found myself at the foot of a steep bank where none was expected, peered at map before heading up for better view [20]
#13 struggled to climb fence, hesitant in vague area around control [40]
#18 flag on thicket 60m NW of control [30]
#20 changed mind about going around the uncrossable stream when I spotted a bridge on the map, then realized there was a second stream = double banana! [70]

1st, 6mins ahead of an M14 from OD, but 10 ahead of Dai Bedwell in 3rd

Spring Cottage RG

Mapping 3:30:00 [0] 8.0 km (26:15 / km) +25m 25:51 / km
shoes: Inov8 mudclaw 300

first visit to Stapleford, not too bad underneath the pines, but most of the rough open has become semi-open/plantation or walk :(

3 PM

running 45:45 [3] 8.17 km (5:36 / km) +30m 5:30 / km
shoes: Inov8 Race Ultra 290

Stapleford East
after surveying, ran around the perimeter paths on the east side of the wood, to get an idea of what might have changed and so on, surprisingly the forestry work appears to have removed bramble/rhoddies in two sections, tripped and bruised two fingers

Thursday Apr 7, 2016 #

7 PM

running 50:30 [3] 9.07 km (5:34 / km) +150m 5:09 / km
shoes: Inov8 X-Talon 212

Stanton Spiderwebs
steady one criss-crossing Stanton Moor on trails and in terrain, lovely evening

Wednesday Apr 6, 2016 #

6 PM

running warm up/down 17:05 [3] 3.43 km (4:59 / km) +50m 4:39 / km
shoes: Mizuno Wave Hitogami 2

steady run around Morledge and down to the park along the Derwent for intervals

running intervals 26:52 [5] 5.51 km (4:53 / km) +10m 4:50 / km
shoes: Mizuno Wave Hitogami 2

5 x 1km, off 90secs: 3.49 3.51 3.51 3.46 3.49

better, consistent, but didn't really max out (as ever), last interval was along the Derwent on the way back, lost a few seconds checking watch for distance near the end

running warm up/down 7:16 [1] 1.07 km (6:47 / km) +20m 6:13 / km
shoes: Mizuno Wave Hitogami 2

easy jog back from the other side of the Derwent

running 1:25:56 [2] 12.8 km (6:43 / km) +385m 5:50 / km
shoes: Inov8 Race Ultra 290

Holloway, Cromfor Moor, Bow Woods, Riber, Dethick
sloppy one, and the race ultras proved inferior to the mudclaws, not far, but plenty of climbs, two mins of breaks in total

Sunday Apr 3, 2016 #

11 AM

running warm up/down 16:00 [2] 2.15 km (7:27 / km) +30m 6:57 / km
shoes: Inov8 Oroc 340

steady run/walk to the start

Orienteering race 47:28 [5] 7.98 km (5:57 / km) +70m 5:42 / km
shoes: Inov8 X-Talon 190

EM League Sherwood Pines, Blue
reasonably clean run, good pace, handful of sensible hesitations, no niggles

#6 should've blasted straight to the path, but got seduced by the ride around the green [30]

1st, 2secs ahead of Murgatroyd (on the run-in), 5mins clear of Brian Ward

Friday Apr 1, 2016 #

6 PM

running 1:03:15 [3] 12.03 km (5:15 / km) +170m 4:55 / km
shoes: Inov8 X-Talon 190

Stanton Spirals
aimed to do around 12km and got the route bang on, felt pretty good
