6 PM

running 1:28:59 [3] 15.07 km (5:54 / km) +300m 5:22 / km
(sick) shoes: More Mile Cheviot 2

Winster, Aldwark, Pikehall, Long Dale, Elton
not over the cold yet, but improving, so I risked the Monday night run, better pace than usual with only 6 of us out, hard work towards the end and had to dig in to stay with Paul and JD (I'd neglected to charge my lamp so I had to stay with them

Sunday Sep 29, 2013 #

4 PM

Mapping 1:50:00 [0] 3.0 km (36:40 / km) +15m 35:46 / km
(sick) shoes: More Mile Cheviot 2

too ill to run, but had to get out in the sunshine: went to survey Forty Acre Piece (adjacent to Darwin Forest Holiday Park) for possible use by the community club

Saturday Sep 28, 2013 #

11 AM

Orienteering race 48:33 [4] 7.23 km (6:43 / km) +140m 6:07 / km
(sick) shoes: Inov8 X-Talon 212

DVO Club Champs, Longstone Moor
still feeling light-headed and chest was tight, tried to 'run through it' but only got myself confused missing 2 by 10m and binning at least 90secs, it was a chasing start, using Dave Nevell's precise handicapping, but didn't have the strength to stay ahead of Chris Millard and JD

good middle distance course on a great (little) new area

Friday Sep 27, 2013 #

Note
(sick)

more of the same, slightly dizzy when I stand up

3 PM

Mapping 2:00:00 [0] 5.0 km (24:00 / km) +60m 22:38 / km
shoes: More Mile Cheviot 2

we have permission for Matlock Moor so took advantage of the sunshine to check the map, got stared out by some Highland cattle (the farmer says a few of them are hostile)

Thursday Sep 26, 2013 #

Note
(sick)

continued

Wednesday Sep 25, 2013 #

Note
(sick)

relapse: cold returned this morning, in the form of a sore throat and generally distributed 'thickness'

Monday Sep 23, 2013 #

6 PM

running 1:26:23 [2] 14.35 km (6:01 / km) +340m 5:23 / km
shoes: Inov8 X-Talon 212

Beeley: Hell Bank, Rabbit Warren, Chatsworth, Calton Lees
felt good, the ascent up Hell Bank wasn't a problem and did an extra loop at the top instead of waiting, but later JD and Dave Chaffey headed up towards Lindop and that was hard work (i.e. some walking)

Sunday Sep 22, 2013 #

Note
(sick)

I guess I have a cold, but it seems very mild, until I start running and the strength isn't there, not sure whether to run through it or take a break

10 AM

Orienteering race 1:25:10 [4] 8.9 km (9:34 / km) +279m 8:16 / km
(sick) shoes: Inov8 Oroc 340

SYO Regional, Limb Valley and Burbage Mines
this didn't happen, after two controls I was already struggling physically, couldn't attack the course at all, and it was a real slog out of the valley to Lady Canning's and Burbage, kept going because I wanted to have go around the mines

thought about retiring, just running back down the valley, and that's perhaps why I didn't notice number 20 until download, wasn't bothered

Saturday Sep 21, 2013 #

5 PM

running 27:08 [2] 5.12 km (5:18 / km) +60m 5:00 / km
(sick) shoes: Saucony Peregrine

Oker Loop (short)
lovely afternoon, too nice not to get out there for a gentle trot and felt good as I set off, but went flat very quickly, troubled by right foot, as if it was taking too much stress

wore my Sauconys for the last time, maybe it was them

Friday Sep 20, 2013 #

Note
(sick)

damn cold seems to have returned, definitely got a (slight) temperature, head in a fog, was going to do a quick turn around Oker

Thursday Sep 19, 2013 #

6 PM

running warm up/down 18:08 [2] 3.5 km (5:11 / km) +20m 5:02 / km
shoes: Mizuno Wave Ascend 7

loop around Morledge before trotting along A6 to the park, breathing a bit heavily in the first 500m

running intervals 20:02 [5] 5.0 km (4:00 / km) +5m 3:59 / km
shoes: Mizuno Wave Ascend 7

5 x 1km, 90secs rest: 3.56 4.00 4.01 4.02 4.02

kept a close eye on my pace today (actually looking at my Garmin) and as a result was pretty consistent, though one rest session was too long, no complaints from the body, calves a bit sore (is that the right word) from Tuesday's long road session

running warm up/down 11:40 [2] 1.78 km (6:33 / km) +30m 6:03 / km
shoes: Mizuno Wave Ascend 7

easy run/jog back from the park

Tuesday Sep 17, 2013 #

6 PM

running 1:05:57 [3] 12.81 km (5:09 / km) +265m 4:40 / km
shoes: More Mile Cheviot 2

Farley Hill, Bottom Moor, Jagger's Lane, Farley Moor
haven't done this route for a long while, but wanted to have a look at Bottom Moor and needed a long steady run, didn't feel great on the first climb, but the time wasn't too bad and after that I felt fine, despite the drizzle

Monday Sep 16, 2013 #

Note
(rest day)

a bit tired after the weekend and didn't want to encourage the cold so no Monday night run this week

Sunday Sep 15, 2013 #

11 AM

Orienteering race 1:23:43 [4] 7.1 km (11:47 / km) +275m 9:53 / km
shoes: Inov8 Oroc 340

Dales Weekend, Yockenthwaite
the rain and the wind arrived shortly before setting off to the start, but on the top it was worse with visibility down to 50m at times, it was an ordeal, others seemed to manage it better

4) the way to do this - in hindsight - would have been to follow a bearing 50m at a time, but I let myself get blown off course and decided I'd emerge from the peat bog/marsh and then head west until I found something ... well, I didn't really know when I got out of the bog and I didn't find anything, eventually relocated (I think I hadn't traveled far enough), but made another mistake misreading sandy ground as stony ground [10mins]
9) bif of pfaff working my way down to the control - I hadn't expected to descend quite so much [30s]
11) pit was higher than map suggests [20s]
14) almost overshot, hadn't descended enough, again [20]
15) aimed 20m too low [10]

beat Paul so honours even over the weekend

Saturday Sep 14, 2013 #

12 PM

Orienteering race 1:15:16 [4] 8.0 km (9:25 / km) +300m 7:55 / km
shoes: Inov8 X-Talon 212

Dales Weekend, Malham
not as fast as Paul had led me to believe, and plenty of climb, ran out of energy on route to 11, which only partly accounts for the 2mins lost (see below), definitely not feeling 100%

good course, mostly a route choice challenge

1) took it steady, reached edge of pavement to the left of control [20]
10) missed third crossing point high [10]
11) didn't see wide left route, which might have allowed me to keep up some kind of pace, my route would've been okay, but for cutting the corner and having to descend a steep slope [90]

7th, 8mins behind Carl Edmons, 2 behind Paul

Friday Sep 13, 2013 #

Note
(sick)

slightly worse, but will it be only a mild one?

Thursday Sep 12, 2013 #

Note

hee-hee, now ranked number 2 in DVO, by one point, but going head-to-head with Paul in the Dales this weekend so could be interesting, and after all, he's only eleven years older than me

5 PM

Mapping 30:00 [0] 1.0 km (30:00 / km) +40m 25:00 / km

there was a bit of 'Birchen Edge' I hadn't set foot in ... until today

6 PM

Orienteering 54:39 [4] 6.5 km (8:24 / km) +150m 7:32 / km
(sick) shoes: Inov8 Oroc 340

SYO Local, Big Moor
this was tough and it didn't help that my sinuses are blocked (going down with a cold)

was so preoccuppied with just making some progress didn't check my compass on the way to 2 and got horribly confused behind White Edge, very vague back there, but I found the thing (unlike Colin Smith) and stumbled my way through to 5 then home

Wednesday Sep 11, 2013 #

Note
(sick) (rest day)

feeling under the weather, tired, lethargic: the traditional autumn cold coming on? (no, thanks)

Monday Sep 9, 2013 #

6 PM

running 1:25:00 [2] 14.3 km (5:57 / km) +210m 5:32 / km
shoes: More Mile Cheviot 2

Flagg, Chelmorden, Taddington Moor, Monyash
smaller group tonight, slightly quicker than usual, not much waiting around, though plenty of stiles to negotiate

Garmin failed, so distance and time an estimate (map measurement)

Sunday Sep 8, 2013 #

10 AM

Orienteering race (urban) 47:25 [5] 8.7 km (5:27 / km) +180m 4:56 / km
shoes: Mizuno Wave Ascend 7

City of Bristol Race
great courses from Sloanranger making full use of the confusion concealed by the departments of Bristol Uni

ran pretty well, but realised as I approached the final timed out crossing that I had too much left in the tank and should have pushed the pace earlier

3) went right when left would've been shorter, also missed the gap coming out of the control [20]
10) going out to the main road was longer [10]
15) long leg, didn't attempt to pick my way thru the uni buildings, probably lost time on pace and checking map
21) cautious [10]
24) round the back to the left, right would've been slightly quicker [10]
26) went down wrong road at multi-road junction coming out of control for 20m [30]
28) erm, went down wrong road at multi-road junction coming out of control for 10m [10]

apart from pace, and possible sub-optimal route choices, lost maybe a minute and a half

9th, 4mins behind Clive, but 25secs would've put me in 6th (my target)

Friday Sep 6, 2013 #

7 PM

running race 35:42 [5] 7.37 km (4:51 / km) +250m 4:08 / km
shoes: More Mile Cheviot 2

Great Longstone Fell Race
nice race, bit too much tarmac and not enough moor, at least the rain held off

steady up the climb, too many people rolled past for my liking, only caught two or three on the descent, developed stitch coming up Moor Lane, and Paul came by, which disrupted my motivation more than anything, was catching him at the end but I let it go - felt I might throw up

got my eating wrong, had an early diner and a very early tea (15:30), not early enough!

2 PM

Mapping 2:00:00 [0] 4.0 km (30:00 / km) +50m 28:14 / km
shoes: More Mile Cheviot 2

mapping the marshes in the middle of Birchen Edge while conditions are dry, but did actually encounter some moisture, reeds up to my chin, not much detail in the woods there, unless it's obscured by the bracken

6 PM

running warm up/down 8 [1] 1.2 km (7 / km) +10m 6 / km
shoes: More Mile Cheviot 2

jog through the trees and the brambles

running intervals 17:46 [4] 4.03 km (4:25 / km) +25m 4:17 / km
shoes: More Mile Cheviot 2

2 x 2km, with 2mins rest: 8.48 8.58

struggled with these - I guess stumbling around a moor for two hours takes its toll - though I was just about on threshold target (the Garmin measured them at slightly over 2km), call it a day after the second

Monday Sep 2, 2013 #

6 PM

running 1:18:40 [2] 11.2 km (7:01 / km) +340m 6:06 / km
shoes: Inov8 X-Talon 212

Padley Gorge, Millstones, Higger Tor, Burbage boulders
Paul Addison led this one which meant the pace was higher than usual and the route unpredictable, but there were pauses to wait coming out of Oxhay, and then to take in the view on Higger, wasn't suffering too much from the previous two days racing, good to get back on soft ground though

Sunday Sep 1, 2013 #

10 AM

Orienteering race (urban) 59:37 [4] 8.3 km (7:11 / km) +105m 6:45 / km
shoes: Mizuno Wave Ascend 7

Sheffield City Race, Don Valley
longer course today so took it steady from the start, still, the first two controls are probably where I lost the most time

1) no way through the undergrowth down to the canal, wou'dve been better crossing on the right and doubling back [20secs]
2) planning ahead along canal then had doubts about whether I'd passed under the first bridge, stop dead, (the one ahead looked narrower than expected), then didn't see the flag, even though it was visible from 100m away, slow [30secs]
10) possibly shorter going right, but not as simple [10]
20) possibly a straighter line to be had going left [10]
26) started navigating to 28, but turned out it was a valid route, though fractionally longer [10]
28) for some reason I thought the control was going to be on the building so ran past the flag [10]

10th, six and half mins behind Martin Ward, which is pretty good for a distance of 11km
