Mapping 2:00:00 [0]
shoes: inov8 Mudclaw 272

tramping around in the frozen bracken on Lumsdale Hillside, tricky bunch of small crags/boulders to map (or not)

running 1:13:42 [3] 13.47 km (5:28 / km) +230m 5:02 / km

Ashover Rock, Ravensnest Tor, Tansley Moor, Upper Lumsdale
Saw this rock sticking up on the horizon on the way back from an interview near Chesterfield last week, turns out there's good piece of access land overlooking Ashover, planned a route starting there, did that route in the sunshine today, very nice

missed two turnings slightly so could've been faster, I'd picked the least severe incline up the 'edge' but it was still enough to reduce me to a walk, had to put in an effort on the last third back from Tansley Moor, happily the result was 90 secs faster than previous

the Meadow
planned to go out for an easy run over the Oker loop, felt very sluggish, then found the way across to Darley Bridge was completely waterlogged, turned back and ran around the Meadow instead, picked up the pace a little, but seriously, what's the deal?

Note
(rest day)

Okay, ranking points. One year ago I scored good points finishing 6th out of 15 in a tough race, 17mins behind Steve Watkins; this year, it was 5th out of 16, 16mins behind Steve Watkins.

What will the ranking wheel of fortune bring this year?

A: 1117 (last year 1154)

Orienteering race 1:38:02 [4] 9.5 km (10:19 / km) +190m 9:23 / km
shoes: inov8 Mudclaw 272

East Midlands Champs, Eyam Moor
had to run early (almost an hour before the competitors) to get back in time to help, which mean heading out in cold rain and high wind, out on the moor I barely saw a soul, but didn't go too badly

3 - stopped took a bearing, missed right, overshot, looped around (90secs) (the crossing point wasn't taped at this time so no clues there)
8 - went left 20m before control, another smaller loop, deeper depression than anticipated (1min?)
14 - interesting to see how the routes compare: I took the route with the least heather/bracken: upper crossing point, then all the way down the path/stream to the crossing point east of the control, longer, but nice to have a path
20 - should've taken a straighter line to the left of the first hill
24 - headed to the right of the hill when there was an easy line in to the left
25 - should've climbed straight over hill - the bracken was slow on the line I picked, also picked the wrong line up the next slope

5th, 16 mins behind Steve Watkins, who was 10 ahead of the pack

running warm up/down 12:28 [2] 2.41 km (5:10 / km) +5m 5:07 / km
shoes: Saucony Peregrine

easy run/jog along the Derwent to the Scout Hut as a warm up for testing the long course for the New Year's Day event

Orienteering 59:14 [3] 9.16 km (6:28 / km) +290m 5:35 / km
shoes: Saucony Peregrine

Long Course, Matlock Urban
tested out the long course for my New Year's Day event ... can't say too much about it, except I'm still not sure what the best routes are

moderate performance physically, would've been quicker in the 'blood' race conditions, (in last year's race, I did 49mins), pretty slippy out there

running warm up/down 14:00 [1] 2.0 km (7:00 / km) +15m 6:45 / km
shoes: Saucony Peregrine

easy run/jog/walk home from the Scout Hut

shoes: Saucony Peregrine

Farley Hill, Upper Lumsdale, Tansley Moor, Matlock Bank
this has become my default run, just under 8miles, some climb, good at night (I didn't run at night last year, weird)

felt a slightly better this time out, but didn't go much faster :(

running (fartlek?) 58:43 [3] 9.02 km (6:31 / km) +200m 5:52 / km
shoes: Saucony Peregrine

Matlock Bank, Farley Moor
beautiful day but no decent orienteering within 80 miles, couldn't even get out to the Edges, took a run up to Farley instead, to check out the SE corner and also my rough satellite-image re-survey of the moor

slow to get going, almost abandoned at the top fo the road (this will be my fourth consecutive training day), it was kind of a made-up fartlek session, stop start, easy then more intense, a reasonable pace on the way home, but hell it's all a bit of a struggle

Orienteering race (night) 51:52 [4] 6.3 km (8:14 / km) +130m 7:28 / km
shoes: inov8 Mudclaw 272

DVO Night Event, Hardwick Hall
pretty good run both physically and technically, although I neglected to read the map in detail

bit of a banana at 14 where I couldn't see the wood from the trees, literally, I couldn't distinguish between the runnable and the semi-open, suspected I was going wrong and confirmed it by the sight of the fence, tricky control at night

4th 11mins behind Richard Robinson

running 38:23 [3] 6.69 km (5:44 / km) +100m 5:20 / km
shoes: Saucony Peregrine

Oker Loop
didn't run fast enough yesterday (nor for long enough) so took myself out on the same loop and tried to do it faster: mission accomplished ... by 9secs

good that I got out for training runs on consecutive days, not so good they were both so slow, slower than my long runs, although those tend involve more pavement than the Oker loop

Thursday Nov 15, 2012 #

4 PM

running 38:37 [3] 6.69 km (5:46 / km) +100m 5:22 / km
shoes: Saucony Peregrine

Oker Loop
thought I'd catch the last of the daylight with a quick one around Oker, lovely misty dusk by the time I got to the top

but something's wrong, the engine's not working, fine to the first split, but plodded up the hill, no speed or strength, 49 seconds slower than last time (late August), which was a minute slower than my best on that route

6 PM

running 1:10:29 [3] 12.63 km (5:35 / km) +240m 5:06 / km
shoes: Saucony Peregrine

Farley Hill, Upper Lumsdale, Tansley Moor, Matlock Bank
same as last week, not so good, took a while to get into gear, don't know why

Sunday Nov 11, 2012 #

11 AM

running (terrain) 57:20 [3] 9.24 km (6:12 / km) +200m 5:36 / km
shoes: inov8 Mudclaw 272

Longshaw, Bole Hill, Millstone Edge
didn't have the one bit of map I needed for my first attempt at this route, the north part of Longshaw (Dad couldn't find it), so missed the turning and crossed the road too low, ended below Millstone Edge and had to walk up to the top, that spoiled the mins per km, but wasn't going too well at that point anyway, also lost the route through the car park

tough-going, but good views

Farley Moor, Jackson Tor
run back home from north end of Farley, deep into dusk so had to take it easy in the woods

Mapping 2:00:00 [1]

Dene's Fields, Matlock Green, Recreation Ground
wanted to get the survey done on a little area we could use for o-club, parkland, and some runnable, but as a mapper I had to tramp around in the brambles as well

Thursday Nov 8, 2012 #

6 PM

running 1:07:53 [3] 12.65 km (5:22 / km) +240m 4:54 / km
shoes: Saucony Peregrine

Farley Hill, Upper Lumsdale, Tansley Moor, Matlock Bank
it's been a while since the last training run over an hour, but I've got a new headlamp so I could enjoy the mild weather, felt pretty good

didn't notice any breathing difficulties

4 PM

running 37:00 [2] 5.4 km (6:51 / km) +20m 6:44 / km

easy run home from Northern end of Farley Moor, with a few pauses to make a mental note of one or two details

(had stopped the Garmin altogether)

Orienteering race 1:18:13 [4] 7.6 km (10:18 / km) +260m 8:47 / km
shoes: inov8 Mudclaw 272

Greno Woods
faded badly in the last quarter, sloppy today as well:

2 - path junction attack point didn't seem to exist (it was a biker's track), passed within 20m of the control, attacked again off next track, but too low (maybe 2mins)
18 - short leg, thought I was straying left, hit a control in a depression, carried on, but didn't compensate, again passed through the circle, but didn't know whether I had overshot or needed to go on, relocated on track, but came in too low because the seat I found wasn't marked (yet there was one marked higher up the track), came out on the other side, found it that time (5mins), worst mistake since Craig'a'Barns

disappointing

Mapping 2:00:00 [1]

a walk around Farley Moor with the planner of the upcoming local event, checking the map, identifying areas for surveying

6 PM

Orienteering race (night) 1:26:41 [5] 8.9 km (9:44 / km) +110m 9:10 / km
shoes: inov8 Mudclaw 272

Midland Night Champs, Gresley Wood
horrible, torn and wet by the time I reached the first control, had to crawl through a gap in a hedge and a marsh resembled a small pond, lots of controls hung low on thickets (thorn bushes), too often got to the circle but couldn't pick out the feature or the flag, as an early starter I was the guy leading people into the control, got trapped in a ditch lined with unmarked fight, not fun

course was a kilometre too long for a night event, but didn't run too badly

5th, 10mins behind Jason Howell

running 44:26 [3] 8.12 km (5:28 / km) +145m 5:01 / km

Chatsworth
weather forecast was good, sister was going to Chatsworth, went for run around the woods there, mostly on forest tracks, a few trails, nice area

cold has gone, I think, but sinuses still blocked, seems I'm breathing through my mouth more than usual, definitely below par, slow

Mapping 2:00:00 [1]

gotta get this survey done

some challenges on Lumsdale hillside: almost no contour detail, crags of varying height, too many to map, and a few areas of impassable bracken
