running 34:08 [3] 5.68 km (6:01 / km) +155m 5:17 / km
shoes: inov8 Mudclaw 272

Oaker Loop
still feeling rotten (see below) but thought I'd get out there and see if a run would sort it out ... hasn't worked yet

very easy pace, which freed me up to take a different route, going straight up the hill instead of across and then along the ridge, handled okay, and it gave me a different perspective on the terrain - some very tricky contour and vegetation detail

felt sick for the last 2km

Note
(sick)

Gut rot all afternoon (and evening).
I wonder if it has something to do with not eating properly last night. I had buckwheat porridge 5pm, a lucozade at 8:30, followed by a bottle of beer and then, at 10pm, a north staffs oatcake with strawberries and nutella. So, a long run where my meal should have been.

And then I piled it in this lunchtime.

All very fascinating, I know.

running 1:06:32 [3] 12.88 km (5:10 / km) +50m 5:04 / km
shoes: Saucony Peregrine

Longside Moor, Harewood Moor, Flash Lane, Farley Hill
beautiful evening and I had to make use of it, despite the lure of Germany v Italy, so I got dropped off out on the top on the edge of Longside Moor, and ran back from there

not much climb on this one, but most of the first 5km was on trails through heather and long grass

7 PM

running warm up/down 9:00 [2] 1.6 km (5:37 / km) +15m 5:22 / km

easy run down to the Derwent before 1km intervals

running intervals 16:23 [4] 4.0 km (4:06 / km)

the Derwent
4 x 1km with 2mins rest: 4.06 4.07 4.04 4.06

started to feel a bit heavy due to yesterdays long meanderings, and the times were a fraction slower than the last outing (did the full 1km today), but really should have gone one more, it's not as if my body was actively complaining

running warm up/down 9:00 [1] 1.2 km (7:30 / km)

jog/walk back from the Derwent after intervals (obviously)

7 PM

running 1:17:39 [3] 12.31 km (6:18 / km) +255m 5:43 / km
shoes: Saucony Peregrine

Stone Edge, Holymoorside, Birkinshaw Wood, Harewood Moor
went out with a bunch of runners associated with DVO, opted for the slower group and very pleasant it was, but had to push on for the last 3km to squeeze some juice out of it, in the end I should have gone with the big boys as they didn't go as far as feared, and at that pace I could have got my first 15km run under the belt

beautiful evening and the rabbits, hares, kestrels, and lapwings were out there with us

Sunday Jun 24, 2012 #

Note

first night of sleep uninterrupted by the sore tooth for two weeks!

11 AM

Orienteering race (park) 24:49 [4] 4.1 km (6:03 / km)
(sick) shoes: Saucony Peregrine

Derbyshire Schools Champs, Darley Abbey
took a while to get into the map and the terrain: a strange scale (1:6000) and thought the semi-open symbol represented rough open (here long grass) with scattered trees, then there was a new path mown through that grass and a boundary fence that was almost completely obscured by undergrowth

Chris Millard caught a minute on me by 6, but that spurred me on, and I needed that incentive cause I'm a little gummed up with a cold, tough going at that pace

Thursday Jun 21, 2012 #

7 PM

running 31:25 [3] 5.67 km (5:32 / km) +145m 4:55 / km
(sick)

Farley Hill, Matlock Bank
still feeling depleted by the teeth business, but with tomorrow looking like a complete washout, had to get out today, thought I'd take it easy, stick to the pavements, vary the pace where I could

went up Farley Hill quite well, but boy was I blowing hard coming home

Wednesday Jun 20, 2012 #

7 PM

Orienteering (park sprint) 9:52 [4] 1.95 km (5:04 / km) +5m 5:00 / km
(sick)

Whitworth Park (Matlock O-Club)
the toothache had wiped me out so I'd come along in ordinary clothes intending just to help out, but I couldn't resist a run, borrowed me father's shoes (which fitted!) and a top, unfortunately he didn't have any trousers spare

it was hard-going and it felt like I was out there a long time (which I was for 2km in a park)

Tuesday Jun 19, 2012 #

Note
(sick)

tooth trouble: visit to the dentist made the pain worse

(to take my mind of it, went with my sister to check out a potential 'terrain' running venue, Robin Hood's Stride: it'll be good for some variety, while the bracken is not at full growth, but difficult to get enough distance, will probably have to run down from Birchover, or the edge of Stanton)

Monday Jun 18, 2012 #

6 PM

running tempo 26:35 [4] 5.07 km (5:15 / km) +130m 4:39 / km
shoes: Saucony Peregrine

Oaker Loop (short)
sometimes you don't feel good all day, but then you drag yourself out there and you're fine, today wasn't one of those days

I decided to do it quick (sort of tempo) and it was my second fastest time, yet the pace wasn't much better than on yesterday's so-called steady run, but I guess today came right after yesterday

and the toothache is taking it out of me

Sunday Jun 17, 2012 #

5 PM

running 1:04:15 [3] 12.0 km (5:21 / km) +235m 4:53 / km
shoes: Saucony Peregrine

Matlock Bank, Upper Lumsdale, Knabhall Lane, Tansley, Lumsdale, etc
inspired by the wee fell race, extended the Upper Lumsdale route to include the lanes above Tansley and it turned out just about right: 12km and some good climbs

took it nice and easy and never felt under pressure so the overall pace is quite pleasing (especially as I weebled around a section of Council property for the Urban map)

tight calfs ...

Thursday Jun 14, 2012 #

6 PM

running warm up/down 6:43 [2] 1.32 km (5:05 / km)

easy run down to the centre before interval session

7 PM

running intervals 15:30 [4] 3.82 km (4:03 / km) +10m 4:00 / km

4 x 950m with 2mins rest, along the west bank of the Derwent, intended to do five, but I was fading on the fourth, didn't feel like I'd been going any faster than at the end of my longer runs and maybe I wasn't - I wonder if a longer warm up would help - but these were faster than the ones I used to do around the park, approximately 4minute kms.

3.50, 3.51, 3.49, 4.03

fitter? or did the bends of the park route slow me down?

running warm up/down 8:00 [1] 1.1 km (7:16 / km) +30m 6:24 / km

jog/walk home up the hill

Wednesday Jun 13, 2012 #

6 PM

running 15:23 [3] 3.16 km (4:52 / km) +5m 4:50 / km
shoes: Saucony Peregrine

the Meadow
o-club was at the Whitworth so ran down there via the Meadow (along the curves of the Derwent and then over the railway)

felt a twinge in my right calf, which has been quite tight since last week's fell race

7 PM

Orienteering (park sprint) 5:26 [4] 1.1 km (4:56 / km) +10m 4:43 / km
shoes: Saucony Peregrine

did one of the butterfly courses around the park

Tuesday Jun 12, 2012 #

running (part terrain, with map) 46:54 [3] 7.51 km (6:15 / km) +180m 5:35 / km
shoes: inov8 Mudclaw 272

Middleton Top, Harboro Rocks
planned to do the long plod around Matlock Moor, but was offered a lift up to Harboro Rocks, got dropped off at Middleton Top so I could put some distance in before zig-zagging around Harboro with the map

pace was a bit slow because I was making up the 'route/course' as I went, probably should've made it more of a fartlek session, but a good work out running to the trig point twice and I always 'enjoy' weaving through rocky outcrops and knolls

Sunday Jun 10, 2012 #

11 AM

Orienteering race 57:41 [4] 8.4 km (6:52 / km) +180m 6:12 / km
shoes: inov8 Mudclaw 272

EMOA League, Allestree Park
a cross-country time trial, effectively, with a few trips through the nettles

kept it going quite well, up to the half-hour mark, had to walk a stretch between on the way to 13 (as did Alan Segar, I discovered), almost caught Chris McCartney, he was moving faster and making mistakes, but he burned me off on the long run-in, when I was fading, felt sick at the end

5th, four and half minutes down on Andrew Powell (only 30secs per km)

Saturday Jun 9, 2012 #

7 PM

running 36:19 [2] 5.7 km (6:22 / km) +100m 5:51 / km
shoes: Saucony Peregrine

Matlock Bank, Lumsdale/Hurst Farm, the Derwent
easy run out to the far side of the map, then a jog across the hillside to see what was there - some big boulders! - and then an easy run back, picking the pace up for the last km along the Derwent, but the final 100m was flooded

just a loosener before tomorrow's race, don't want to let two days go by without training

Thursday Jun 7, 2012 #

running race 34:30 [4] 6.89 km (5:00 / km) +185m 4:25 / km
shoes: inov8 Mudclaw 272

Tansley Fell Race
I said I had to do some fell races so I bloody well had to do the local one, despite the rain (pity about that - yesterday was lovely)

ran quite well but couldn't say I was really involved in much of a race, steady start, overtook a few on the hills, one guy came speeding past out on the top, apart from that, not much action, very wet, but not muddy, almost developed a stitch

quicker time than the Oaker loop, which is slightly shorter and has significantly less climb, encouraging :)

30th (out of 64), 13th veteran, 6mins down on the winner

Tuesday Jun 5, 2012 #

2 PM

running 1:05:45 [3] 12.61 km (5:13 / km) +200m 4:50 / km

Matlock Bank, Bottom Moor, Upper Moor, Farley Hill
started and finished at my sister's house, which shortened the first part of the route and slightly lengthened the last, so I compensated by pushing further along the top with a little loop through a bit of Forestry Commission land

not quite so fast today, particularly in the first part, which surprises me as I felt okay and there wasn't as much climb!

Sunday Jun 3, 2012 #

running 31:06 [2] 5.69 km (5:28 / km) +40m 5:17 / km

Matlock Bank, the Derwent, and Cawdor Quarry
felt rough after lunch again, low energy, but improved and had to get out for some kind of run, despite the rain

took it easy up to the Council buildings, had a jog around there then down to the Derwent and did a 1km interval [963m - 3.49], followed by a root around the wooded quarries across the valley that dad visits when he goes for a run, had push through a bit of undergrowth there

could have gone on for another 30 mins (or so I felt)

Saturday Jun 2, 2012 #

Note
(sick) (rest day)

what a difference a day makes!
yesterday I felt good during and after the run, thought I'd get another in today, before the rain came on Sunday, but felt really rough after lunch, wiped out ...

Friday Jun 1, 2012 #

running 1:02:19 [3] 12.37 km (5:02 / km) +220m 4:38 / km

Matlock Bank, Bottom Moor, Jaggers Lane, Farley Hill
boom! he breaks the hour for a training run for the first time in two months, felt good all the way on this one, took the straighter, shorter line across the Bank, but a longer route through Bottom Moor, it all seemed less arduous for some reason, very strong on the way back ...

so what made it so much easier today?
there was a rest day preceding, the weather was overcast and warm, visibility on the top was about 100m, Bottom Moor was dry, I had two slices of toast and marmalade and a large macinato for breakfast (3 and half hours before the run), a glass of water half an hour before, I was preoccupied with other thoughts and didn't think too much about how I was feeling as I ran
