running intervals ((test)) 1:15 [4] 0.25 km (5:00 / km) +25m 3:20 / km

Arc Leisure Centre
tested out the length/incline of an 'interval' up the access road: challenging - not quite flat out and I was struggling ...

running (small paths and tracks) 1:07:02 [3] 12.0 km (5:35 / km) +115m 5:20 / km

Forty-six Acre Wood, Whitesprings, Hall Dale Wood, and Holt
time was when I jumped up and down and celebrated running for an hour, it happens more frequently now, although this time out I had to stop a couple of time to check the map (it's out of date)

started up at the top but it wasn't all downhill as my route through the woods was undulating and then I decided to head up and along the hill avoiding the A6

steady run, almost petered out as I started back up the hill, but kept it going well

Note

Rankings Up-date:

slipped out of the top 50, due to some better orienteers restoring their full quota of scores; the target is now identical: top 400 overall should get me back into top 50 in M40.

Without that 4 minute mistake on Sunday, I'd have been thereabouts

Orienteering race 1:31:36 [5] 10.4 km (8:48 / km) +340m 7:34 / km
shoes: inov8 Mudclaw 272

Burbage Boulders
that was good fun, until the long leg across the heather and marsh ...

one miss and lots of hesitations in the first part of the micro-orienteering, getting used to the map and scale and the sheer volume of information, missed eleven low, confused by the semi-open/forest edges, should've noticed the control was above a flatter area, not on the slope

a guy caught two minutes on me and edged away from me across the moor, where I couldn't get a rhythm going at all (bit of terrain training required), but I punched at the last before him

17mins behind Steve Watkins, was hoping for 12mins ...

running 1:00:51 [4] 11.21 km (5:26 / km) +190m 5:00 / km

White Edge, Froggatt and Curbar Edges
let loose my elder sister again, extended the run a little by visiting the trig point and heading out to the B-road before turning, it was sunny most of the time, but the wind was in my ears and in my face briefly after the turn, so I took a more sheltered route inside the Edges

steady run, slower than last time here, but without stopping to, erm, walk

Orienteering 16:53 [3] 3.29 km (5:08 / km) +5m 5:06 / km

Matlock O-Club, Arc Centre Playing Fields
night orienteering training, first time out with a headlamp for 26 years, and good to get a bit of practice 'cos, boy, is it different - you can run straight past a path junction and it's not so easy to read that map, not without stopping

went round three little courses nice and brisk

running 36:44 [3] 6.7 km (5:29 / km) +100m 5:06 / km

Oaker Loop
back in Matlock, thought I'd reacquaint myself with my standard route, see how things have progressed (for me and for the route now we're deep into autumn)

had to be careful of my footing on the damp rotting leaves and greasy stiles, kept it going up the hill, took a breather after the Ocker tree, and came in five seconds slower than my PB ...

so about the same as September then

'Mitre' Michael Brandon Event, Epping North
9.34km 120m
physically not a bad run, strong at the end, but the navigating in the green, the low-visibility, got me

lost six minutes on the short second leg, going fractionally too far into the wood before turning, making a big loop, and passing within 20m of the control, before attacking again off the path; got to within 20m of number six but puzzled by an unmarked feature I turned away and had to make another loop; not convinced 15 was in the right place, I headed down the left side of the spur and saw nothing, when I headed back up I had to cross to the other side of the spur and didn't pass a narrow marsh on the way - hmmph!

probably 10mins of mistakes all told ...

running 16:02 [3] 3.28 km (4:53 / km) +60m 4:29 / km

Norwood Grove
dragged my best friend's 15-year-old out for a dash around Norwood Grove in the late afternoon sun, (he) kept it going pretty well, and we both beat my previous best on that route ...

how slow was I last year!

running 38:23 [3] 7.47 km (5:08 / km) +120m 4:45 / km

Streatham Common - Biggin Wood
took it very steady as this was a morning session and I felt stiff and sniffly, hard going, but kept the pace at least

running tempo 36:42 [5] 7.25 km (5:04 / km) +100m 4:44 / km

Norwood Grove - Streatham Common
the basic middle distance route, but at 'tempo' - I call it 'tempo' because I pushed from the start and tried to keep that pace going. Did okay: over two minutes quicker than the last time, though last time I ran 200m further (somehow) ...

but five minutes per kilometre should really be my standard pace

Orienteering race 1:26:17 [5] 13.6 km (6:21 / km) +180m 5:57 / km
shoes: inov8 Mudclaw 272

SN Trophy, Wisley & Ockham Common
Brown, 11.6km
similar distance to last week, but more climb, and a bit more undergrowth, which might explain why I found it tough; earlier start too, and it was really warm out there, a bright sunny day. I was struggling a quarter of the way into the race.

went off too quickly, checked the map, but miscalculated the distances and did a little loop away from the first control (<1min), probably should have ran straight at the path, off right, on 7, instead of working my down from the left, another 45 secs or more, the fatigue was getting to me on the other side of the M25, I ran up the wrong path for a hundred metres, which meant I had more bracken to contend with and weak attack point, 45 secs maybe (it's hard to estimate)

so, let's say, I lost 3mins, that means Paul Whiston who overtook me (twice) starting 9mins behind, was moving at least half-a-minute per km faster, and probably more as he made a few mistakes as well.

Ergo, I have a way to go before I can call myself competitive.

running warm up/down 17:18 [3] 3.3 km (5:15 / km) +30m 5:01 / km

Streatham Common
steady run to and from the common for hill intervals

running hills 25:00 [4] +105m

Streatham Common
hill intervals on a nice path up the side of the common, about 15m climb over 260m: 7 x 1.05 (approx)

lost count of how many I'd done when I got distracted by the drama of a police car crossing the grass to check on a group of feral kids who were massing like starlings, should've done one more interval, or longer ones

running 46:19 [3] 8.95 km (5:11 / km) +185m 4:41 / km

Norwood Grove - Biggin Wood - Streatham Common
blimey, where Tuesday's outing was comfortable, today's was rough all the way, maybe it was the time of day, the lack of fuel, ...

got an extra kilometre and a tougher climb into the route

Tuesday Nov 8, 2011 #

4 PM

running 41:09 [3] 7.82 km (5:16 / km) +185m 4:42 / km

Norwood Grove - Streatham Common
oh, that felt pretty good, straight into a rhythm and didn't leave it, stretched out at the end ... about the same as the pace as the last outing on that route, but I thought I was going much faster ... it was dark ...

Orienteering race 1:26:32 [5] **** 12.0 km (7:13 / km) +120m 6:52 / km

November Classic: Busketts Lawn
was looking forward to running in the New Forest again after 27 years, taking the straight route through the trees, and it was a pleasure for the most part ...

no mistakes, but lost 15 secs or more at every other control, with hesitation in the circle (if you're going to walk anywhere, do it in the circle), physically I lasted the distance and finished 11th, 17mins behind Geoff Ellis and 14 behind Andy Munro.

Note

The results for the Saxon's regional event have finally been lodged with BOF and the rankings up-dated ... and finally I make into the top 50 (M40)! Now I have to hold onto that position at the November Classic.

(I had a better run at Carsington Pastures, but scored 60 points less. Go figure.)

running 25:32 [3] 5.31 km (4:49 / km) +25m 4:42 / km

Boardmills
oh dear, set out intending to run two loops in a figure of eight, but only managed the first - that makes it a zero! Felt okay when I started, breathing wasn't too good, a bit tight around the chest (phlegm?), put in a surge at the end and really felt it

running 26:27 [3] 5.33 km (4:58 / km) +40m 4:47 / km
