8 AM

running 27:31 [3] 5.43 km (5:04 / km) +50m 4:51 / km

Pipstorn [Faaborg]
before breakfast, nice steady run, pacier than Wed because I didn't wander around the place

went for a dip in the sea straight afterwards

Wednesday Sep 28, 2011 #

5 PM

running (terrain) 51:23 [3] 9.42 km (5:27 / km) +50m 5:19 / km

Pipstorn [Faaborg]
got to there in good time and grabbed a run around the wood behind the hotel, wandered around some narrow paths, and got steered in a semi-circles by following several extraction lanes, began to feel a bit leaden-legged, but pushed for the last kilometre along the road

wanted to run along the coast, but no path and the tide was in

4 PM

running 16:12 [4] 3.28 km (4:56 / km) +150m 4:01 / km

Streatham Common, Norwood Grove, Crown Point
grabbed a (short) run in the sunshine while I could, this is the route I was doing last September, five to six weeks after starting again, I was improving every time I ran it and the pattern continued today ...

one and half minutes faster than the previous best

Monday Sep 26, 2011 #

Note

So begins the season of grabbing a run when and where and whatever. The days getting shorter and routine getting grindier.

It's going to be a matter of holding on to what I've gained, I fear.

11 AM

Orienteering race 1:05:39 [4] *** 9.7 km (6:46 / km) +205m 6:07 / km

EMOA League Event, Carsington Pastures
a fast area, but wasn't able to keep the pace up, tailed off badly at the end, walking most of the uphill legs towards the end

technically quite good, a couple of hesitations, stayed too high coming off Harboro and had to waste time clambering down a cliff face

12mins behind Mr Adams (and 19 behind Peter Hodkinson) so I guess that's not too bad, it won't get me those extra 8 ranking points, I fear ...

running 56:50 [4] 10.36 km (5:29 / km) +200m 5:00 / km

The Edges (White, Froggatt, Curbar)
my sister drove me up to Curbar Edge and set me loose, beautiful day, lovely soft, dry paths, felt good setting out, but not so good around the turn and - damn it! - had to walk for 2mins on the last incline to Curbar, the slow ascent got me, and the 'heat' ...

disappointed, until I found I'd run 2km more than I had calculated

6 PM

running 12:02 [3] 2.46 km (4:53 / km) +10m 4:48 / km

A6 Arc to Whitworth Centre
ran to the o-night, used it as a warm up, the reverse of the last leg yesterday, but more climb going in this direction, felt laboured

7 PM

Orienteering 10:00 [3] 2.0 km (5:00 / km) +5m 4:56 / km

5 PM

running 45:00 [4] 8.64 km (5:12 / km) +115m 4:53 / km

Farley Hill, Ladygrove, A6
hard to get going today, calves stiff from Sunday's 'long' one, and yet the first split was 45 seconds faster than last week's blinder (though I'd lost about 30 of those by running up a dead end)

But the Garmin's battery ran out after that split, and there was I, calculating by how much I would beat my previous best, composing my Attackpoint entry as I ran ... only noticed when I got to the next split at the bottom of the hill.

So after some cursing I abandoned the route and headed straight home along the A6 to get a better estimate of the total time

still haven't completed this route ...

6 PM

running 1:01:55 [4] 11.97 km (5:10 / km) +220m 4:44 / km

Matlock Bank, Bottom Moor, Farley Moor, Farley Hill
new long route going across Matlock Bank and up the A632 to Bottom Moor, along the edge to the top road and then back around the far side of Farley Moor, mostly downhill from there, hence the speed ...

the longest training run I've done and one of the fastest

Saturday Sep 17, 2011 #

Note
(sick) (rest day)

Wasn't planning to run today, but I'm sensing the start of a cold and might have had to cancel anyway.

In view of my improved fitness, I shall have to increase my distances (the longest run has to be 12km or more) and the volume (four sessions a week).

It's going to be low volume through most of October, unfortunately, while in London, attending the Film Festival from 9am to 9pm Monday-Saturday.

Friday Sep 16, 2011 #

6 PM

running 36:46 [3] 6.71 km (5:29 / km) +100m 5:06 / km

Oaker Loop
darn, thought I'd matched my new best time, but fell short by 7 seconds, felt quite good though, now I know I can do it without stopping I've got no excuse - actually, it was a bit slippy after the downpour so that is my excuse ...

I'm not kidding: slipped on a paving stone on the walk to my starting point, but somehow managed to stay upright, had I gone down that would've been the end of training for a while

Wednesday Sep 14, 2011 #

6 PM

running 35:51 [3] 6.71 km (5:21 / km) +115m 4:55 / km

Farley Hill, Ladygrove
short version of the Ladygrove route ending at Whitworth for the O-club

well over a minute faster than my best on the first two splits combined, but so it should be when you're running 2km less, think I would've smashed my previous time anyway

7 PM

Orienteering 7:33 [3] 1.5 km (5:02 / km) +5m 4:57 / km

O-Club: Whitworth Park
individual 'relay' - seven single legs of around 100m and back

Monday Sep 12, 2011 #

6 PM

running 54:56 [3] 9.81 km (5:36 / km) +250m 4:58 / km

Farley Hill, Upper Lumsdale, Tansley, Starkholmes
variation on the 'long' run, heading up the hill to my sister's house in Starkholmes, instead of weaving my way across Matlock Bank, more climb but shorter

the wind was bouncing around all over the place so it didn't really impede my progress, or maybe it pushed me along 'cause I was 47 seconds ahead of previous best at the last split

Saturday Sep 10, 2011 #

7 PM

running 34:05 [3] 6.51 km (5:14 / km)

Forty-Six Acre Wood
ah, it's a nice wood, drove up there, did two laps, then up and down the paths through the middle (so as not to get bored) ...

got a bit of stitch towards the middle of the first lap, but I ran it off

Thursday Sep 8, 2011 #

6 PM

running 55:58 [3] 9.84 km (5:41 / km) +300m 4:56 / km

Farley Hill, Upper Lumsdale, Tansley, Matlock Bank
the deal was I'd do the short park event on Wednesday and do a longer run the day after, almost reneged on the deal, but it was a fine evening so it had to be done

felt quite good for the first half, but laboured home, guts churning, pace was better than previous efforts though

Wednesday Sep 7, 2011 #

6 PM

Orienteering race 21:45 [3] ** 3.3 km (6:35 / km) +100m 5:43 / km

SYO Evening Event: Norfolk Park
very wet, so couldn't go flat out, even when I was up for it, nice steady little run though

Monday Sep 5, 2011 #

6 PM

running 36:39 [3] 6.71 km (5:28 / km) +100m 5:05 / km

Ocker Loop
Wow, just knocked almost three minutes off my best time for this run. How did that happen?

The car failed the MOT and I felt the weight of it on my shoulders. Grey evening threatening rain. Almost didn't go out. And when I did, I didn't push the pace, but I did keep going up the hill all the way to Ocker tree. Haven't done that before.

I was helped by having two gates held open for me and meeting a dog walker at the point where previously I had slowed to a walk.

11 AM

Orienteering race 55:26 [4] *** 6.35 km (8:44 / km) +200m 7:33 / km

Sheffield Urban Race
probably set off too fast, as I was surrounded by young guns at the start, found it tough going in the last third, and got quite dehydrated

a couple of overshoots, one where I could have reached through the fence to punch, but resisted, was executing a route on a long leg when I realized - in time! - there was another control in between, in fact, another two, then at the "road crossing" I saw a marshall and panicked, asked him if it was obligatory, he told me it was ... it wasn't, lost a minute going through the time out procedure, a bit dispirited after that

Thursday Sep 1, 2011 #

7 PM

running 1:02:40 [3] 10.79 km (5:48 / km) +300m 5:06 / km

Farley Hill, Upper Lumsdale, Tansley, Matlock Bank
didn't feel too bad at all, good rhythm, and a lot more left in the tank compared with the last outing on this route, lovely evening too
