4 PM

running 22:52 [2] 3.83 km (5:58 / km) +15m 5:51 / km
shoes: inov8 Mudclaw 272

Tallinn
I was going to call this a warm up, but as I kept a nice easy pace all the way (apart from road crossings), it was a bit more than a warm up ... but only a bit

Orienteering 24:06 [2] 3.58 km (6:44 / km)
shoes: inov8 Mudclaw 272

Merimetsa (Tallinn)
printed a copy of an O-map of a forest on the near edge of Tallinn, had some kind of training exercise on it, so I ignored that and just picked out controls and navigated

nice area with good visibility, pine and birch, but had to stick to the paths because the snow was knee-deep in places, as I discovered on leaving an attack point, then again it wasn't always easy to pick out the paths and it took a while to get to grips with the scale (1:7500)

5 PM

running 21:00 [2] 3.39 km (6:12 / km) +30m 5:56 / km
shoes: inov8 Mudclaw 272

Tallinn
easy run back from the wood, put in a bit of effort ascending a little-trodden snowy path up to the top of the old town

Monday Feb 27, 2012 #

4 PM

running 10:00 [1] 1.2 km (8:20 / km)

Merimitsa & Pirita Strand
really just a sporadic jog/brisk walk to check out the surfaces underfoot in the snow here: conclusion, very runnable, but only for half as long as normal

Monday Feb 20, 2012 #

Note

I'm going to be travelling the next two days and then I'll be Estonia for the following two and half weeks, don't know how many runs I'll manage to get in given the sub-zero temperatures, the workload, and the - shall we say - non-atheletic habits of my hosts

5 PM

running 28:29 [3] 5.07 km (5:37 / km) +40m 5:24 / km

Oaker Loop (short)
That's right, same again. I know I can do this little loop even when I'm feeling off, as I was during yesterday's race. Didn't feel too bad, but what was I doing on the way back, very slow.

Don't usually run the day after a race, but the body recovers quite well these days, it's the engine that isn't there, and right now, the lungs

Here's to good health!

Sunday Feb 19, 2012 #

11 AM

running warm up/down 20:00 [2] 2.4 km (8:20 / km) +50m 7:33 / km
shoes: inov8 Mudclaw 272

jogged half of the way to the start, but ran back and there again to collect my whistle - needn't have done because they merely asked if we had them, no visual check, and they had spares!

Sweat was dripping off me in the start box, probably the best I ran all day

12 PM

Orienteering race 1:20:30 [4] 9.2 km (8:45 / km) +320m 7:27 / km
shoes: inov8 Mudclaw 272

Compass Sport Cup, Brereton Spurs, Brown
damn, this cold. I don't feel ill or low on energy, until I start to run. (Didn't help that I forgot my whistle and had to put in an extra 1.5km as warm up.)

Struggled around today, losing massive amounts of time on pace alone, missed 7 though I was within metres of the control because the flag had been knocked half to the ground (30-60 secs), cut in too soon on 24 and found the slope steeper than indicated and the ground much rougher (30secs), a couple of less than optimal route selections ...

26th: 15mins behind Andrew Munro, 23 behind Anthony Squire

(I took the full 4mins of time out available!)

Friday Feb 17, 2012 #

12 PM

running 20:04 [2] 3.54 km (5:40 / km) +40m 5:22 / km

The Dimple
set out on the long route as I was feeling fine after yesterday's outing, but laboured up the hill even more than usual, and couldn't quite see myself making it all the way to Bottom Moor, turned around and took a jaunt through the Mortledge estate to check my map

well below par, my easy runs down to the park have been quicker!

(lucky I didn't go further 'cause the Garmin was claiming low battery)

Thursday Feb 16, 2012 #

5 PM

running 27:52 [3] 5.07 km (5:30 / km) +40m 5:17 / km

Oaker Loop (short)
thought I'd try the same run again, see if the form would improve, and it was a bit better, made it up the hill alright, didn't really struggle, but then I didn't push it either

progress, but I wanted to be putting in the miles these past few weeks :(

Tuesday Feb 14, 2012 #

12 PM

running 28:42 [3] 5.07 km (5:40 / km) +40m 5:27 / km
shoes: inov8 Mudclaw 272

Oaker Loop (short)
the cold had improved so there was nothing for it, I had to get out ... but it really was hard work and I decided to cut the loop short, missing out the summit ...

Monday Feb 13, 2012 #

Note
(sick)

cold worsened slightly overnight after yesterday's race, but lifted by the end of the day

Sunday Feb 12, 2012 #

11 AM

Orienteering race 59:38 [3] *** 7.9 km (7:33 / km) +100m 7:06 / km
spiked:21/22c (sick) shoes: inov8 Mudclaw 272

EMOA League, Thieves Wood
my cold wasn't getting any better, nor any worse, and there's only so much sitting around I can take (easier to run around a wood than the streets in snow), so out to Thieves Wood we went

Nice course, but very easy: most of the flags were visible from outside the circle. So a day for the runners. I felt fatigued approaching the halfway mark. I could judge the loss of pace by the way the guy I'd caught at 6, started to have the edge on me, but I stayed in touch and then we took different routes on 19 and I didn't seem him again ... 'cause I chose the best one. :)

12th, 10mins behind Joe Taunton

(9.45km)

running warm up/down 20:00 [1]
shoes: inov8 Mudclaw 272

good warm up before the start and jogged half the way back from the finish (both were a fair distance due to a relocated car park)

Saturday Feb 11, 2012 #

Note
(sick)

no change ... no, that's a lie, it felt like the cold had lifted last night, but the thing crept back up on me in the night

Friday Feb 10, 2012 #

Note
(sick)

yes, the cold is hanging around

Thursday Feb 9, 2012 #

Note
(sick)

cold, slightly worse, can feel it my throut and lungs, annoying

on a brighter note: reached 398 in the BOF rankings, due to scores dropping from others

Wednesday Feb 8, 2012 #

Note
(sick)

cold, not a bad one, but bad enough

Tuesday Feb 7, 2012 #

Note
(sick)

on the cusp of a cold (further details available on request)

Sunday Feb 5, 2012 #

3 AM

Walking 27:00 [1] 2.7 km (10:00 / km) +55m 9:05 / km

Matlock, Starkholmes
brisk walk through the snow up to my sister's house (not exactly training)

Saturday Feb 4, 2012 #

6 PM

Orienteering race (Night) 54:20 [4] *** 6.77 km (8:02 / km) +225m 6:53 / km
spiked:11/14c shoes: inov8 Mudclaw 272

Northern Night Champs, Canklow
well, that was fun, running through the snow, no need for a lamp, because of the light from Sheffield reflecting off the clouds, except to the read the map, of course, and see the controls ... hmm, needed a bigger lamp for that - I looked right bang at two or three of them and couldn't pick them out until I came around again, that's where I lost my time, that and not running hard enough (I was saving myself for Big Moor - which has now been cancelled)

But my strategy worked! Pace counting. Very stop and go. Run when you know where you're going. Stop to make sure you've got there. Back to basics. I was so confident I knew where I was that when I found the re-entrant at 4, but could not see the control I was tempted to stand there in protest. Could've been wrong though. ;)

the journey back was not fun, driving through the snow, skidding up and down hills, not fun, not even as a passenger

8/30, 13mins behind the fleet-footed Steve Watkins, but 7+ ahead of John Duckworth, DVO's finest

Friday Feb 3, 2012 #

Note
(rest day)

Beautiful day for a run, but with two races this weekend I dare not venture out, not when you also consider how sleepy I felt after yesterday's outing.

It's 18 months since I started orienteering again.

Thursday Feb 2, 2012 #

12 PM

running 1:06:45 [3] 12.37 km (5:24 / km) +230m 4:56 / km

Matlock Bank, Bottom Moor, Jaggers Lane, Farley Hill
the slowest yet, perhaps because I added a little diversion along some unexplored lanes with some extra climb, but I shouldn't really be concerned about the times for these runs: it's just a matter of putting in the miles

Wednesday Feb 1, 2012 #

6 PM

running 16:00 [3] 3.02 km (5:18 / km) +55m 4:51 / km

Matlock Bank
easy run up and across the bank on my way down to o-club in the park, checking out an area I haven't visited before, some good alleyways

8 PM

running 8:36 [3] 1.58 km (5:27 / km) +35m 4:54 / km

Matlock Bank
easy run home via the Bank from o-club
