1 PM

running 57:31 [3] 10.17 km (5:39 / km) +220m 5:06 / km
shoes: inov8 Mudclaw 272

The Edges (White, Froggatt, Curbar
didn't know if I was going to make it round this one, felt heavy legged and fatigued (a cold coming on?), but turned out to be a pretty good time, 2mins quicker than last time, faster on each split

made myself study the map on the run, which should've slowed me down, as well

howver, first time I did this route, I did pretty much the same time and I walked for a stretch!

Wednesday Feb 27, 2013 #

1 PM

Mapping 3:00:00 [0] 7.0 km (25:43 / km)

out on Farley Moor again, not too much bramble today, got lured onto the open moor by the sunshine and was pleased to find some narrow marshes, depression and gulleys, we've got to get permission for this bit

5 PM

running 37:37 [4] 7.02 km (5:22 / km) +110m 4:58 / km
shoes: inov8 Mudclaw 272

Oker Loop
the plan was to do a long one, but fast, however, I came down off Farley Moor a bit late so settled for Oker as the sun went down

and it was fast, or should I say, up to speed, and without much of a struggle, quicker than my PB (allowing for the extra 300m), though the ascent was slower ...

so I'm back to where I was in Sept 2011?

running warm up/down 5:00 [1] 0.72 km (6:57 / km) +30m 5:45 / km
shoes: inov8 Mudclaw 272

jog/walk back to the house from the roundabout

Tuesday Feb 26, 2013 #

Note
(rest day)

Birthday, grey sky

Monday Feb 25, 2013 #

6 PM

running 1:44:21 [2] 14.24 km (7:20 / km) +300m 6:38 / km
shoes: inov8 Mudclaw 272

Ashover, Redcar Hillside, Stubbing Court
this one was a bit slow, but still there were times where I struggled, especially aroun the turn, where we headed into muddy fields and I didn't know where we were going

have to up the pace in the other runs now

Sunday Feb 24, 2013 #

11 AM

Orienteering race 1:13:30 [4] 7.1 km (10:21 / km) +290m 8:36 / km
shoes: Inov8 Oroc 340

EM League, Crich Chase
the bramble and the climb beat me today, didn't help myself by overshooting the easy first control (due to the 1:7500 scale) and missing three by 10m - because I'd lost confidence in myself (and saw an unmarked depression and a boulder field hidden by the purple line)

9th, 19mins (!) down on Alistair Buckley and Andrew Llewllyen

Friday Feb 22, 2013 #

6 PM

running warm up/down 10:26 [3] 2.0 km (5:13 / km) +30m 4:51 / km

Wednesday low-intensity intervals didn't really qualify, so it was down to the park for some more. My warm ups haven't been long enough so I made detour halfway up Bank Road to stretch it out a bit

running intervals 20:09 [5] 5.0 km (4:02 / km) +5m 4:01 / km

5 x 1km intervals, 90 secs rest: 4.04 4.03 4.02 4.01 3.59

pretty good, although some of the rest sessions exceeded 90secs, kept getting a whiff on cooking fat and vinegar on the home straight, nauseating, clearly I could have done another one ...

running 9:20 [1] 1.43 km (6:32 / km) +30m 5:54 / km

walk/run home from intervals

Thursday Feb 21, 2013 #

4 PM

running (terrain) 42:03 [4] 6.87 km (6:07 / km) +120m 5:38 / km

Gardoms & Birchen Edges
pfaffed around (kinda hoping for the sun to come out) until I realized I would only have time for a short run so I went back to Birchen Edge for another terrain workout - it's similiar to Stanton Moor, plus marsh

what a pleasure, much drier this week, no dodging puddles of snow, and kept the foot on the gas to make it close to a tempo run (I'd say it was pretty much race pace)

Wednesday Feb 20, 2013 #

6 PM

running warm up/down 1:13 [3] 1.42 km (51 / km)
shoes: Vivobarefoot Breatho trail

steady run down to the PO in my new barefoot shoes (?), concentrating on posture

running intervals 16:40 [4] 3.0 km (5:33 / km)
shoes: Vivobarefoot Breatho trail

3 x 1km intervals, with 90 secs rest: 4.22 4.11 4.07

thought I'd test out the new shoes with a lower intensity (4) mini-interval session: the first one was slow, the second and third were improving, not bad considering I wasn't pushing it

felt like I got better air intake with a more upright posture

running 7:49 [2] 1.44 km (5:26 / km) +30m 4:55 / km

easy run home from the park

Tuesday Feb 19, 2013 #

2 PM

Mapping 3:00:00 [0] 7.0 km (25:43 / km) +50m 24:50 / km

keeping at it until I get enough done for a running check (when my feelings about the runnability might change), but the sunshine on the moor lured me away from the grot, found some point features out there and also some deep bog, the quarry looked bramble-free, just heather and rocks ...

Monday Feb 18, 2013 #

2 PM

Mapping 2:30:00 [0] 6.0 km (25:00 / km) +20m 24:35 / km

getting these point features fixed on Farley Moor - but the map is erring on the detailed side (all those rhodedendrons)

6 PM

running 1:39:00 [3] 14.3 km (6:55 / km) +405m 6:04 / km
shoes: inov8 Mudclaw 272

Cambridge and Clough Wood, Bonsall Moor, Wensley Dale, Oker
starting from Darley Bridge, only five of us, an easy pace, as usual, with JD leading the way up the hill to Bonsall Moor, stuck to his tail this time, and weirdly when we came to my patch (Oker) I kept going and they didn't try to catch up, took my own longer route back through Cambridge Wood at a good pace

left my Garmin at home so the time and distance are not precise

Sunday Feb 17, 2013 #

12 PM

Orienteering race 1:01:19 [4] 10.05 km (6:06 / km) +90m 5:50 / km
shoes: Inov8 Oroc 340

Compass Sport Cup Heat, Fineshade
ran brown because a) I'm used to it, and b) we're light in this category, up against Pete Hodkinson, though not Oli Johnson, who didn't show

pretty much my best run since the 'return', only a hesitation at 10 when the control was hung on the wrong side of a pond, thought I'd set off too fast but the splits suggest otherwise, felt a bit heavy, tired after 40+ mins, but knew I'd kept ahead of Aidan Smith who should have started 4mins behind, didn't see him till the exit from 22 and he did not pass me!!! (in fact, he didn't gain anything on the last loop!)

10th, 13mins behind Poo Boy (which will probably mess up the ranking points)

ah, checking the splits I've found one mistake: I just didn't notice the track to 14, ran along the edge of the wood, cost me 20secs

Saturday Feb 16, 2013 #

3 PM

Mapping 2:00:00 [1] 4.0 km (30:00 / km) +80m 27:16 / km

too nice not to get out to Farley, there were a few things I wanted to check and apparently blank section that I needed to investigate - it wasn't entirely blank and the vegetation was not entirely bramble, darkness caught up with me though and had to run back to the car

Friday Feb 15, 2013 #

2 PM

Mapping 3:00:00 [0] 6.0 km (30:00 / km)

poking around a new bit of wood, finally, not too grotty, but not much there either, a depression/knoll, possibly, a veg boundary or two, possibly

better luck back at the place I surveyed first: I found all the point features - now I've got to put them in the right place ;)

sensational sunset toward which I ran like a girl (in walking boots)

6 PM

running warm up/down 10:00 [2] 1.6 km (6:15 / km) +20m 5:53 / km

easy run down to the park via my sister's house before intervals

running intervals 20:03 [5] 5.0 km (4:01 / km) +5m 3:59 / km

intervals: 5 x 1km, 90secs rest: 4.01 3.58 4.02 4.00 4.02

delighted with these, I remembered the plan to take it steady on the first when I was finishing the second, fortunately, the rest of the plan was to do three fast ones - I did that and then I did one more, probably could've done another ... always say that

not sure why this went so well: I'd spent three hours mapping in the afternoon, so maybe the body, if not the heart rate was sort of warmed up, I was also trying to focus on posture, leaning forward, feeling my toes

running warm up/down 6:00 [2] 0.82 km (7:19 / km) +30m 6:11 / km

easy run back to my sister's (uphill)

Thursday Feb 14, 2013 #

1 PM

running (terrain) 45:53 [3] 7.11 km (6:27 / km) +120m 5:57 / km
shoes: inov8 Mudclaw 272

Gardoms & Birchen Edges
for the sake of variety I went for terrain run with my base map of Gardoms & Birchen Edges, and it was mostly through terrain as the paths were wet, a lot of water up there, some of it very cold, I was aiming for 45mins at a good pace, very enjoyable, and not tired at all ... which means I should have pushed harder

Tuesday Feb 12, 2013 #

2 PM

Mapping 2:30:00 [0] 5.0 km (30:00 / km)
shoes: inov8 Mudclaw 272

focussed on a small area dotted with rhodendrons, trying to get to grips with them - I don't like the way the grow along the forest floor, creating a kind of sprawling undergrowth the height of brambles but more robust, how do you represent that? (double undergrowth screen?) found another knoll/boulder

the mudclaws have finally gone despite (or because of) my father's attempts to shoe glue them, so that leaves one intact pair of running shoes, I need a hybrid pair for road/trail runs and another pair of o-shoes, jeez

5 PM

running 1:08:09 [3] 12.45 km (5:28 / km) +240m 5:00 / km
shoes: Saucony Peregrine

Farley Hill, Upper Lumsdale, Tansley Moor, Matlock Bank
felt nicely warmed up after mapping, but could've done with getting out half-an-hour earlier to beat the dark (lamp didn't last long)

tried to keep the pace up today and it worked - one of my faster ascents of Farley Hill, felt very comfortable too, got slowed by some icy patches on the road, a dog walker on a narrow path and couple of oncoming cars

(bit concerned about the Garmin's accuracy: when I ran this route back in Aug/Sept, it marked it as 12.65 - last time it had it as 12.25, only difference is I stopped at the top of the road, but that's less than 150m)

Monday Feb 11, 2013 #

Note

Left quad tightened on the way back down from Farley, don't know if that had anything to do with the cold and/or the moment I almost turned my left ankle.

Didn't have a lift to tonight's long run anyway.

2 PM

Mapping 2:00:00 [0] 5.0 km (24:00 / km)

Farley Moor
Things look different in the snow. Happily I was able to spot the point features (boulders/knolls) I'd selected previously. Also noticed a few vegetation boundaries that I hadn't seen before.

Sunday Feb 10, 2013 #

12 PM

Orienteering race 45:29 [4] 5.3 km (8:35 / km) +150m 7:31 / km
shoes: inov8 Mudclaw 272

Tankersley Middle Distance (or Parkin & Hesley Woods)
would've been a good run, but for a melt down at 25, attacked off the side of a clearing, but the angle wasn't right, didn't find the control, got confused, didn't help that I was looking for a re-entrant when the control was actually in a depression, close to 3mins gone there

I'm getting fitter and running faster and that means my technique, or my concentration and discipline has to improve

Saturday Feb 9, 2013 #

7 PM

Orienteering 1:16:17 [4] 7.7 km (9:54 / km) +100m 9:18 / km
shoes: inov8 Mudclaw 272

British Night Champs, Tankersley
really good course, not a bad run, missed a few paths, lots of little hesitations - hard to read the map on the run, and the control descriptions while stationary - some short hesitations where I was close, but couldn't see the flag and had to check map, and two misses, notably over the road

7 - ran fast to the fence, attacked off the corner, took a bearing, missed, very vague contours in this area, came out at the path below and looped around to find it, I may have passed quite close first time (3mins)
9 - ran along the edge of the slope and would've hit it bang on, but I got pulled left by the direction others were taking, overshot and relocated on another control (I'd sensed that one was too far), flag was at the back of a hollybush, tricky one (90secs)
14 - couldn't make up my mind which way to go, in the end I stumbled down the slope, fell, rolled and fought my way to the road and went left, must've lost a minute in that period

9th of 20, 16mins behind Dave Peel (target 10th)

Friday Feb 8, 2013 #

2 PM

Mapping 2:45:00 [0] 5.0 km (33:00 / km)

wanted to finish surveying this section of Farley because next week I want to run around the bits I've mapped, checking the placement of the point features and above all to get a proper sense of the runnability, where the bramble becomes a problem and where not ...

found a nice boulder, definite control site

Thursday Feb 7, 2013 #

running (trail) 59:19 [3] 9.97 km (5:57 / km) +220m 5:21 / km
shoes: Inov8 Oroc 340

The Edges (White, Froggatt, Curbar
drove up to Curbar gap for my favourite run, cold, but hardly a breeze, the paths covered in a thin layer of ice, which meant I had to take care, even thought they turned out less slippy than they looked

felt a bit laboured at the start - but there's a fairly sharp climb - but then settled down, in fact, I thought I was going quite fast, however, it was about the same as last time (when I paused to take some photos!)

Wednesday Feb 6, 2013 #

2 PM

Mapping 2:00:00 [0] 4.0 km (30:00 / km)

a gig with rhodies on Farley Moor, beyond the rhodies I found some good patches of runnable and some point features, as well as a clearing, a veg boundary, and a ditch junction

6 PM

running warm up/down 17 [2] 2.7 km (6 / km)

around the park a couple of times expecting to bump into Becky and hang some controls, as warm up for intervals

running intervals 21:00 [5] 5.0 km (4:12 / km) +5m 4:11 / km

Hall Leys Park
intervals session: 5 x 1km, with 90secs rest: 4.09 4.07 4.09 4.15 4.13

started off steadily this time, but couldn't get much faster, heart was beating after the fourth, body wasn't really complaining though

Tuesday Feb 5, 2013 #

12 PM

running 40:06 [3] 6.7 km (5:59 / km) +130m 5:27 / km
shoes: inov8 Mudclaw 272

Oker Loop
a bit sticky in the fields and lower slopes but the ridge was nice and that's where, coincidentally, I got going, didn't improve the pace much though

running warm up/down 5:00 [1] 0.73 km (6:51 / km) +30m 5:41 / km
shoes: inov8 Mudclaw 272

jog back home from the A6 roundabout

Monday Feb 4, 2013 #

2 PM

Mapping warm up/down 2:00:00 [0] 5.0 km (24:00 / km)

more brambles and rhodedendrons on Farley Moor, gonna be tough to map those rhodies

Sunday Feb 3, 2013 #

11 AM

running warm up/down 20:00 [2] 2.7 km (7:24 / km)
shoes: Inov8 Oroc 340

slightly late leaving for the start so a brisk jog/warm up all the way there

12 PM

Orienteering race 1:18:31 [4] 10.6 km (7:24 / km) +190m 6:48 / km
shoes: Inov8 Oroc 340

Midland Champs, Sherwood Forest
expected to have a cleaner race, slowed up around the 45min mark, got a bit messy after that, my target was 8th and only made 11th, still way off the pace ...

3) over cautious - took a bearing! - then found a line of unmarked dead trees (20+secs)
5) possibly lost a bit cutting the corner through rough open/green
7) would paths have been better? I enjoyed going through the heather and Tim Tett went that way as well
13) Bingo control, couldn't see it when within 10m and it was in white/semi-open, ran close to the green right on line and couldn't believe it when I couldn't see either pit, very confuse, only found it because others came along (2mins, Martin Ward lost 3mins), very annoying
17) tired, decided to go straight because I wouldn't have gone much quicker on the track, but at the crossing point took the track anyway and I don't think that was the best idea, the control seemed pretty visible (1min, party due to pace)
20) within 10m, but turned downhill as I decided the next clearing was the one (40secs)
24) hmmm, tried to straighten the last part of the leg, but must've cut in too early (miscounting dead trees?), crossed small paths without noticing and had to bounce back, ignored my control and went to another (1min)
25) confused by circling around the last control, I ran off 90° in the wrong direction, didn't like the look of things, but only slowly adjusted the direction, so came around in a big banana loop, still missing the small paths (2mins)

The last one was the worst mistake. I had already started running when I glanced at my compass. Should've stopped and turned 90° instead of behaving like an oil tanker. This was the difference between making my target 8th and not making it.

24th on the combined M45/M50 course, 18mins behind Tim Tett! 15m behind JD

2 PM

Mapping 2:00:00 [0] 7.5 km (16:00 / km)

beautiful day, so off to Farley to visit the brambles, also paid a visit to the moor to catch the sunshine, no point features today, but I did manage to find the depression from last time

Friday Feb 1, 2013 #

2 PM

Mapping 2:45:00 [0] 7.25 km (22:46 / km)

Farley Moor
up to Farley to tramp through the brambles, found a few more point features, but I'm scratching my head about how to represent the vegetation: undergrowth screen(s) with small holes where the bramble disappears? - but these won't show up very well, nor will the clearings filled with fine-branched young saplings ... not without veg boundaries ...

some massive boulders along the slope in Hurker, but too many of the darn things, on the upside, the area above the quarry turns out to be a nice bit of wood
