Note

interesting to look at previous map of Pippingford Park (2004), the area around control 8 on course 3 is very different: on the old map I can see the little ditch/dot marsh I followed up the hill, but it ain't there on the new version

this only compounded my error, which was not to have realised the control was further away from the wooded valley than my catching feature so I overshot and ran up a parallel unmarked ditch and then down some others, and so on

BNOC, Pippingford Park
bad run, dammit, got close to the controls but couldn't find them, as if my internal GPS had been turned off, caught by Chris McCartney at 3 (4mins), running

2) decided to run up the hill between the earthbanks, but should have run inside the second [30secs]
3) took a quick bearing from the path junction above, sighted a house with its lights on, came down the hill, but missed the marsh right when planning to err on the left, very puzzled by absence of marsh [3-4mins]
8) difficult to run my own race with Chris around, plan was vague and I reckon I crossed the ditch where it became a marsh and started running up and down other gullies [4mins]
10) maybe not the best route, Chappers beat by 80secs going all the way up the hill on the path [1min]
12) internal 'GPS failure' pace counted to within 20m but couldn't see any sign of the control (no one around to give it away) [3mins]
17) again got to where I needed to be but couldn't see it - it was further down the hill (no one around when I needed them!) [2mins]
21) went high, missed path [30secs]
22) too straight, so had no attack point, and realised I was just hoping to find it, when back to track and came in off junction [1min]
23) slow along the slope, slipped down one bank [30secs]

felt strong but didn't run as fast as I should have done for the distance, plenty left in the tank
