Day 1 of the West Point A-meet. I had been right to focus on navigational goals more than on physical ones. The terrain and the course were wonderfully technical. As a result, however, no matter how carefully I was trying to read the map and the land around me, I wasn't reading them quite carefully enough. I don't feel that I made any route choice errors. However, I was not in contact with the map the entire time.

Today I am preparing myself mentally for the West Point A-meet tomorrow and the day after tomorrow. I expect this to be some of the most technically challenging terrain, some of the most difficult footing and two of the longest courses I've experienced in years. My two main goals are to stay in contact with the map the entire time and to make good route choices on long legs. If I can do this while walking uphills and trotting the rest of the way, I will be a happy man.

Was meaning to go to an orienteering meet organized by the Western Connecticut Orienteering Club (WCOC) today. However, instead of going to Huntington State Park in Redding, went to Tarryville Park in Danbury (the location of last week's meet, to which I couldn't go).

Decided to go for a trail run at Tarryville in this beautiful weather. It's amazing how much more fun it is to run in the woods than in the city. Ran in the orienteering shoes for the first time in years. Body is not used to the lack of ankle support and the relatively narrow soles, so ankles and knees started to worry a little bit about half-way into the run. The little stabilizer muscles around the ankles and the knees are just not strong enough yet.
