Paddling (Canoe) 2:12:16 [3] 14.23 km (6.5 kph) +31m

'Bent and I met Goose and Coach LD for a fun paddle up and down the Beaver River from Epping. We made it 7 km upstream thanks to the spring high water. We had to do a little agility paddling to get around some branches and logs but there was a lot of clear sailing. Coach LD posted a fairly complete list of wildlife sightings on her log. Highlights included many egrets, two bald eagles guarding their huge nest in the same location as last year, and some very cute muskrats.

We all had lunch on our deck and caught up some more while the dogs attempted to steal our food. Then we went into the forest to dig up some wild leeks to transplant to the Doughtys' garden.

Trekking (Trail) 1:15:00 [1] 5.73 km (13:05 / km) +137m 11:41 / km

BazingaDog and I went for a hike to Metcalfe Rock while 'Bent ran with AdventureDog. We ran into a bunch of rock climbers and escorted one pair to the secret trail entrance for the Swamp climbing area since they had walked by it without seeing it.

'Bent ran out to meet us as a cooldown after his main run.

My quad is fine for walking now, including down stairs, but it's still quite painful if my knee bends past about 80 degrees. Because that doesn't happen in most circumstances, I forget about it until I accidentally do it, then OUCH!!! It seems wise to hold off on running until that stops.

Paddling (Canoe) 1:12:17 [3] 6.98 km (5.8 kph)

'Bent and I toured a small part of Eugenia Lake by canoe. We hadn't been there since ESAR a number of years ago. I had flashbacks to that race with my late friend Cory Trépanier. He used to set up his easel and do oil paintings in his canoe, which turned out to be great preparation for his first and only adventure race.

Eugenia Lake has lots of cottages, motorboats and jet skis so we've avoided it but today we only saw one other watercraft - a fishing boat - while we were on the water. If we choose our timing well, it would be fun to paddle here occasionally.

You can see what's left of my broken nose in this photo.

First trip to Kolapore in 4 weeks and spring has arrived! So has turkey hunting season so we and the dogs wore some orange on our hike. There are a lot more turkeys at home in Caledon but there are more guns up north.

We have a LOT of wild leeks on our property. 'Bent cooked us a dinner of asparagus and wild leek pasta - yum.

The remnants of my broken nose are hidden pretty well by my glasses.

Note

Look what I found in the Orienteering Ontario archives today! And there's a lot more.

"Mike Waddington: Champion Orienteer".

Note

Surgery was one month ago today and I graduated from hand therapy this afternoon. For the next 4-6 months, I'm supposed to sleep with my hand in a splint using a stick-on gel pad that shrinks the scar. The surgery restored functionality so well that I could probably skip the splint but the scar needs some work.

Note

It snowed overnight! And there were a few flurries during the day, too.

My quad is slightly better but still extremely painful. I'm walking with a limp. Boo.

The 3 hours of Raid The Rib weren't too hard on my Achilles so I expected to get back into a low distance running routine this week. Unfortunately, my right quad has other ideas! It hit the pavement hard when I broke my nose but improved before RtR. I had one fall in RtR and at the time, I only thought about my success in avoiding my hand surgery and my nose when I landed. In hindsight, the same quad hit the ground again. It is *sore*.

So... I took AdventureDog and BazingaDog for a hike around Palgrave West. They were thrilled and their pace was just fine for me today. (They're wearing orange vests because it's turkey hunting season. Hunters aren't allowed on conservation land but we've had some intruders in the past.)
