The Icelandic Forest Service is encouraging people to hug trees while social distancing. Our adventure racing team was way ahead of the curve!

Happy Easter to you!

Dad took great joy in giving me a big Toblerone chocolate bar every Christmas. When the tradition started, I protested feebly that no adult needed that much chocolate but I soon stopped pretending. Mom's treat came in the spring when she gave me a yummy chocolate bunny. She passed away just before Easter last year and it was several months before I could bring myself to eat the last bunny I would ever receive from her.

I've been buying Christmas Toblerones in Dad's honour and, for the first time, this year I had to be my own Easter Bunny too. Actually, the Bunny has been a little *too* generous with the chocolate lately.

I posted this on Facebook but it may be of interest here too. If you’ve read about the simulation that suggested fast cyclists could potentially infect people within 20 meters, Dr. Jennifer Kasten M.D. has some reassuring science for you - although you should still exercise alone or with family members. For non-Facebookers, I'll put the text of her post in a comment.

Thanks to Hammer for organizing a post-SMT coffee chat on Zoom this morning - even though he doesn't drink coffee. It was great to see so many good friends and share our different stories at this weird time in the world. Such a nice blast of connection and semi-normality. :)

9 AM

Running (Treadmill) 30:00 [2] 3.56 km (8:26 / km)
shoes: Salomon XR Mission

Treadmill walk/run. I dared to bump it up to 1 minute walking, 2 minutes running, which seemed OK. Today's entertainment was one of the Red Bull TV films recommended by Funderstorm. - awesome.
10 AM

Strength & Mobility 3:00 [1]

I did heel drops for insertional Achilles tendinopathy, which is my best Google diagnosis while I can't see a health care professional. I've been doing heel drops on and off with no problem but my foot didn't like the bent-knee version that I added from a physio website. Oops, it really hurts now. I guess that was too advanced.

Running (Treadmill) 40:00 [2] 4.38 km (9:08 / km)
shoes: Salomon XR Mission

Treadmill walk/run on a beautiful day. I tried the Intervals program but it isn't good for this purpose because the intervals are short and fast.

In case you missed this. :) For anyone who missed the original moment in his press conference a few days ago, check the link below.

The original moment. Regardless of your political views, I can't imagine how tough it must be to answer questions in two languages in daily press conferences at such a challenging, fast-moving time. I'm surprised there aren't more foot-in-mouth moments!

Tomorrow will be Trudeau's 27th consecutive daily press conference then he's taking two days off to spend Easter with his family. For 14 days of these press conferences, his wife Sophie was quarantined with Covid-19 so he was also alone in the house with 3 kids - yikes.

Foothab. Treadmill walk-runs don't bother my sore heel. Running on uneven terrain really bothers it. Hiking seems OK if the ground isn't too rough. This week my heel flared up badly after I went grocery shopping, came home, cleaned our food and walked around the house without indoor shoes. It's a good reminder not to be lazy about that. Things have reached a new low when washing apples leaves me in pain.

'Bent normally celebrates the Passover Seder with his family. This year it was a Virtual Seder connecting 6 households, 15 people, 3 dogs, 3 cats, 3 generations, 3 time zones, 3 provinces, 1 territory and surprisingly few technical glitches. It was an unqualified success. The octogenarian Moms were surprisingly comfortable with it, and the 5-year-old twins knew more features of Zoom than anyone else on the call.

Matzah (unleavened bread) is an integral part of the Seder meal but 'Bent couldn't find it locally. His 82-year-old Mom wanted to drive an hour to bring him some from Toronto because she viewed it as an emergency worth taking risks for. Luckily, Adriana Roche, the owner of Gourmandissimo, saved the day by agreeing to make matzah for him.

Note

Yesterday, Canada's Chief Public Health Officer said that cloth masks are a reasonable measure to protect others from asymptomatic transmission in areas where physical distancing can't be maintained, e.g. shopping and public transit. So I grabbed a bandana and made a no-sew mask in 2 minutes. Not exactly fashionable! I’ll sew a real one before my next shopping trip.

I was shocked at the number of people I saw wearing N95 and surgical masks in the grocery store. We still have some masks in the dental office after donating most of them to the hospital but they're so valuable for health care right now that I didn't want to use one for shopping. P.S. Grocery shopping these days feels like going to war. Such a bizarre world.

Note

Some wonderful things happened today!
- Delicious homemade bread was delivered to the hood of my car by Coach LD
- A friend presented a great Zoom slide show and we saw some adventure racing friends.
- 'Bent cooked another great dinner. I am spoiled.

And one stressful thing that kept me awake - a whiny rant from someone we've been helping. Not everyone is at their best right now.
