BazingaDog and I went for a tour of the local raspberry picking sites - some walking, some jogging, some eating. We started him on arthritis medication last week in case he was feeling sore and he's perked right up.

Note

A friend invited me to do Expedition Canada next year and I had to admit to her - and myself - that I don't think I'll ever be able to do an expedition AR again. I'll be really happy if I can do a long run again.

Interestingly, she had Achilles pain for 4 years but signed up for an expedition AR anyway. Her teammates were concerned to see her limping beforehand but the 540 km race seems to have cured her Achilles problem. !!! For now, I think I'll stick with my physio exercises but I sure am jealous.

These micro-sessions are weighted one-footed heel lifts. The theory is that they strengthen my calf muscles and encourage the fibres in my injured Achilles tendon to grow in a more organized, less painful fashion. Current weight is 55 lb.

Paddling (Canoe) 1:32:50 [3] 8.16 km (5.3 kph)

After BazingaDog's successful canoe paddle last weekend, we wanted to try both dogs in the canoe in anticipation of a backcountry trip so we returned to the Beaver River. Sometimes they start playing when they're together so this could have gone badly but they were great.

AdventureDog is an old hand at canoeing although he gets excited near shore. "Oh no! Are they going to abandon me? My first owners did. Could this be the campsite? I *love* campsites. Woof woof WOOF!"

BazingaDog was totally relaxed after learning the ropes last week. Unbelievably, he was the better dog in the boat. All the same, I wouldn't trust him to stay nearby in the dark while we're hanging the food at a backcountry campsite. AdventureDog is still our obedient one.

Note

Exhausted this morning due to a poor sleep after hearing that a friend - a doting father of two young girls - was killed by a hit-and-run driver while walking with his wife in a quiet town. Other good friends are preparing to say goodbye to a brother who has chosen MAiD today. And we're adjusting our plans to attend the Saturday funeral of a friend's Mom - the minister who married us. She was housebound but got Covid and was unable to fight it off. It's a "hug your friends and family" and "plan things with other people before it's too late" day.

I'm not sure if anyone here would remember our adventure racing friends and occasional teammates, Wayne and Kathryn Cassidy, who moved to Tajikistan years ago. They're home in Canada for a while and we had a picnic lunch today with their four boys and our two dogs. Alas, 'Bent was working but he did get to say hello.

At age 11, our dear BazingaDog is slowing down. Notorious for a few big escapes, we had to walk him on leash until this winter when he suddenly became trustworthy. We've anticipated this change for years and it made us both happy and sad.

Tipping the scale at more than 80 lb, he would have needed to be especially calm and obedient to join us in a canoe. He wasn't. In our last attempt with Goose and Coach LD, he lasted only a few minutes before he dove out of the canoe and swam toward a mucky shore surrounded by poison ivy. Combined with his habit of running off, canoeing just didn't seem to be his sport.

Until today, that is. We'd really like to take B-Dog on a canoe trip while he can still do it. He's missed out on a lot of fun that our other dogs have enjoyed. STORM and Browner have been keen to join us with their two Labs, who are like cousins to our dogs. So today we took him out on the Beaver River as a test, not sure if we'd be out there for 2 minutes or 2 hours.

He was a champ. We were so proud of him. After some initial wobbling and shaking, he got the hang of sitting and lying down for better stability. He stayed calm as we passed muskrats, a tree full of raccoons, and dozens and dozens of noisy birds, and he even ignored the two frogs who hopped into our canoe. Now we need to start planning his trip. :)

Paddling (SUP) 1:23:46 [2] 6.41 km (4.6 kph)

Spectacular day! 'Bent and I took our SUPs to Peasemarsh Beach on Georgian Bay and paddled up to the Thornbury Harbour entrance. Although we prefer canoeing and kayaking, there is something really nice about seeing right to the bottom of a clear body of water. The lake was a stunning blue-green. It was fairly calm although there was a light breeze and an occasional set of waves from a passing boat.

It was our first SUP paddle since last summer and I was surprised that I felt it most in my calves. Maybe when I was a long distance runner, my calves didn't notice whatever it is that SUP paddling requires of them. My feet felt it too. I would have expected to feel it more in my shoulders and back.

I was tempted to jump in for a short, chilly swim but settled for a break to sit and dangle my legs in the water.

Mountain Biking (Trail) 1:40:00 [3] 16.0 km (9.6 kph) +285m

Ride around Kolapore with ‘Bent and Dee on a beautiful morning. We decided to ride the new trail route that we just started clearing. It was a worthwhile adventure but my bike got tangled in some undergrowth and my right forearm landed on a rock. It was fairly flat so I was lucky but there’s enough blood and bruising that I’ll be trying to hide it if I’m out in polite company.

Our other excitement was the discovery of one of the largest piles of poop I’ve ever seen. Based on location, a bear is the most likely animal but it also looked a bit horse-like. Horses are less likely than bears here. I’ll be making lots of noise on the trails!

My watch turned off. Track is on ‘Bent’s log.

Note

I planned a mountain bike ride in Palgrave today. A First World Problem involving our defective new fridge took from 8:00 to 10:30 and will be continued next week. Then came another First World Problem when a tradesman arrived 90 minutes after his 4-hour window had ended. It was close to 3 pm by then and I still had to drive into town to buy groceries - another first world demand. So my bike stayed in the garage and I will get fat(ter).

Trekking (Trail & Bushwhacking) 1:05:00 [2] 5.64 km (11:31 / km) +61m 10:55 / km

I'm not sure of the best way to log trail building but I'll start with the GPS track of the distance I hiked then I'll log a separate strength session.

Strength & Mobility 3:00:00 intensity: (1:00:00 @1) + (1:00:00 @2) + (1:00:00 @3)

Trail building with the Kolapore Wilderness Trails Association. My jobs were digging, pruning, carrying tools, hauling logs and ripping vegetation out by its roots. It was hard work made a little harder by the friendly local mosquitoes but the company was excellent and we made fantastic progress.

From my post on the Kolapore Wilderness Trails Facebook page, which I help administer:

"History was made today on the Kolapore Wilderness Trails! ... A volunteer crew began clearing the first major new trail since Kingsway was built 33 years ago. Next year is the 50th anniversary of the Kolapore Wilderness Trails. This new multi-use trail, which joins Jackrabbit to Paradise Highway west of the Wild Mouse hill, will be open for next year's ski season.

It was fitting that today's work session was organized by Bruce King, who helped build our very first kilometre of trail in 1973 and has continued to work on these trails ever since. (In case you're wondering, yes, we named 'Kingsway' after him."

Here's today's trail crew.

On the right is Bruce King, current Association President and one of the founders of the Kolapore Wilderness Trails in 1973. On the left is Dr. Richard Ellen, who has been skiing here since 1975. Both men have remained very active in the trail association for almost 5 decades, including lots of trail work days.

'Bent took down a lot of trees that were in the way.

I did a lot of different tasks, including so much pruning that my right hand is really sore now.

The Collingwood Off Road Cycling Association (CORC) generously lent us their team of young trail builders. I love this photo of "passing the torch" between generations. Well, technically, it's a shovel.

Trail run around Palgrave West before it got too warm. It was nice although my right heel has been painful for the past 6 weeks. It felt better after I'd run a few kms. I need to get back to doing my physio exercises regularly. No one else was in the forest so I enjoyed the hermit thrush concert on my own.

Note

Busy 24 hours from yesterday afternoon to this afternoon as I went up north to manage registration and last-minute updates for Bob's Summit 700 trail race at Blue Mountain. I only got a few hours of sleep but things went pretty well. It was great to see friends although only for a few minutes in most cases, including Goose and Coach LD, Funderstorm and Stefania, Hansel and Isaac, Cait F, Audrey, Timato, Kristen and Aubrey.

On my way back to the chalet, I was run off the road by a horrible driver passing another vehicle on the way downhill from Castle Glen. It's more terrifying in hindsight since there wasn't time to be scared when it happened. He was coming at me head-on at 100+ kph and at first, we both veered toward my shoulder and I briefly wondered if he was suicidal. Luckily, as I pulled off the road, he turned back into my lane and finished passing the other vehicle just after he passed me. Jerk.

Mrs. Gally was on the deck at the chalet waiting for Mr. Gally and STORM to return from a trail run as part of their WT team training session. She'd already biked and run for 4+ hours. The boys returned while we were chatting.

Then tonight 'Bent and I watched today's Tour stage projected outdoors with Veinbuster - a fun way to spend an evening!

A short Tour de Palgrave to procrastinate a little before starting my To Do list. I rode at a decent pace, getting 6th on a Strava segment, which almost never happens in a summer sport.

I'm getting ready to manage registration for the Summit 700 trail race at Blue Mountain tomorrow and Saturday. There's a computer app to learn and we're already starting to hear about the special cases and last-minute requests. It should be fun!

Note

I spent today waiting for time windows when service people might appear.

First up - although after their time window - our new refrigerator was delivered. The old fridge lasted 12 years, as did the one before. I confirmed this with an Attackpoint search so to make this entry more helpful in future searches: refrigerator fridge refrigerator. That oughta do it!

One of the two deliverymen dodged several polite requests to wear a mask into our house. (Gah, I hate being the Covid police. It means I don't spend much money on companies that would need to come into our home.) This guy's solution was to stay outside, which increased the challenge of moving a 260 lb fridge to our kitchen. I helped the one masked guy. Such a weird world . There's a long dent in the fridge door (not from today) so I'll get to wait through another time window next week. Regardless, it has a nice feature where it keeps food cold, which is a welcome change.

Later, Steven the smart technician updated our home security system. So it was a productive day but my most strenuous activities were vacuuming and running up and down stairs.

'Bent and I hiked the dogs around the new trail loop, skipping the part that crosses our neighbour's field so we could investigate a parallel bushwhacking route through the forest. Turns out the first section is quite rocky - I think DGL would call it limestone pavement? We'll have to explore to find the best way through. If we go too far south, we'll hit one of the only patches of poison ivy we've seen in the Kolapore area. Sadly, we own it.
1 PM

Mountain Biking (Trail and Off-Trail) 2:03:58 [3] 15.42 km (7.5 kph) +350m

'Bent and I met Mr. and Mrs. Gally for a fun, crazy ride around Pretty River Provincial Park. Mrs. Gally ran 28 km at Limberlost yesterday and won her age category then taught hot yoga all morning today. She was only planning on an hour at a moderate pace. Mr. Gally rode up the Osler Hill from Collingwood and was going to ride with us a bit longer.

Well, *that* all went out the window. 'Bent really wanted to ride to the bottom of the park and apparently there was a beautiful, easy trail to ride back to the top - a rumour confirmed by the Gallys. None of us really knows these bike trails well but somehow we made it down to Pretty River Road. Unfortunately, the trail we planned to ride up had a "Trail Closed: Natural Regeneration" sign.

So it turned into an adventure race. A little pavement riding, a little bushwhacking, some bike pushing up a steep hill, some bike lifting over fallen trees, a few walks through creeks, a few painful hill climbs and a ton of laughs. :)

Strength & Mobility (Trail Building) 10:00 [1] 1.61 km (6:12 / km) +2m 6:10 / km

I'm only including this so we can have a record of the new trail routes. We went back to help our neighbour improve their new trail and also flagged a forest route that links to a trail on our property and could make a nice connector. Elapsed time about an hour.

Mountain Biking (Trail) 1:48:12 [3] 16.05 km (8.9 kph) +313m

Fun tour of Kolapore with Coach LD, Goose and Mr. Gally (for the first hour). We tried to choose less bone-rattling trails and mostly succeeded although there is no smooth way to climb from the creek toward the Grey Rd. 2 parking lot. It was great to have company and we only saw a handful of other riders and hikers including Adam Burnett, former Bruce Trail FKT holder.

The only negative was the wasp nest at our planned stop on the big bridge to admire the creek. 'Bent was only stung once but over the day, his sore hand ballooned up to the point that he wouldn't be able to do dentistry. Goose was stung twice but didn't swell up as much. A few years ago, 'Bent was tested for an allergy after he got multiple wasp stings from a BBQ nest and swelled up. Supposedly he's fine but it looks like he still needs to steer clear of wasps.
1 PM

Strength & Mobility (Trail Building) 1:30:00 [1]
shoes: Salomon XA Pro GTX - Black

'Bent and I helped our neighbours scout a new trail route on their property followed by the first few passes of brush clearing with their help. There is now half a kilometre of trail passable to a grassy fence line corridor on Crown Land that leads to a trail built by their other neighbour, which connects to the Bruce Trail. Combined with the Bruce and the trails we've built on our land and adjacent Crown Land, this makes a nice, mostly flat loop suited to the patriarch of our neighbour's family, who is active but has knee problems.

Our neighbours are so pleased to have hiking trails. We forget sometimes that orienteering and adventure racing have given us uncommon route planning skills and comfort in bashing through forest to specific locations. We could see that for people who had never done something like this before, there was a lot of learning by doing and a nice feeling of accomplishment.
