Running (Country Road) 1:04:16 [3] 8.05 km (7:59 / km) +194m 7:08 / km
shoes: Snowcross 3 - 1st pair (chalet

Run from the chalet to Duncan Escarpment Provincial Park parking lot and back - a route with a couple of good hills. I ran carefully on gravel, grass, ice (on the steepest sections) and slush. It wasn’t smooth but there was little risk of wrenching my foot on a hidden rock or frozen divot, so I figured I could go farther than I could on trail without inflaming my Achilles too much. I’m slow but I feel like I could start trying to build my endurance back up. It’s dreary weather for December but it’s supposed to snow tomorrow.

'Bent and I met Mr. and Mrs. Gally for a chatty hike up "6th", which is what the locals call 12th Sideroad. We veered south into Castle Glen and overlapped yesterday's hike for a short distance before scrambling up the slippery Bruce Trail to the sideroad. It was planned as a hike but we ran the steepest parts of the descent to the cars; it was easier than walking on the slick surface. Then we had a drop-off at the Doughtys and a drop-off at Dee's before heading back to the chalet for a quick turnaround.

Trekking (Trail) 1:20:00 [1] 5.53 km (14:28 / km) +244m 11:51 / km

'Bent, BazingaDog, AdventureDog and I went to Loree Forest for a hike with Andrea & Steve Good, their children Kingsley and Greyson, and their dogs, Maui and Tulip. On a holiday afternoon, Loree Forest is like a great big dog park. Hikers without dogs are in the minority and most owners seem hopeful that their friendly dogs will expend energy playing with others along the way. Our team of 4 dogs could look a little intimidating at first but the Goods' two Doodles weren't that fearsome up close with their cute top knots.

While we were hiking, we got the notification that the kids would be going back to school two days later, which will definitely protect them from Covid while giving them a little more time to ski.

Trekking (Trail) 35:00 [1] 2.89 km (12:06 / km) +114m 10:06 / km

Holiday outdoor reunion hike around Castle Glen in slippery conditions with kids and dogs. It was the Millers, Doughtys, Fords, Cameron/Muellers (visiting from France), 'Bent and me. Great to see everyone at a time when an indoor party wouldn't work. It finished with a rousing snowball fight. I wasn't even involved but I lost!

Trekking (Trail and Off-Trail) 4:25:40 [1] 13.75 km (19:19 / km) +205m 17:59 / km

'Bent and I took on another Kolapore ski trail maintenance assignment: Southern Crossing west of 10th Line, Quiet Pastures and part of Northwest Passage, a long section that includes several kilometres of wetland. We had to wear knee-high rubber boots and thankfully, we avoided soakers in spite of breaking through the ice with great frequency.

We learned that 'Bent's little Sawzall can cut through softwood pretty well. We managed to clear things we wouldn't have dared to try before. We cleared a lot of smaller debris too.

A couple of blockages will need the greater skills of the chainsaw crew. Unfortunately, they're both a long way in.

And we'll just have to wait for this one to fall down - yikes.

Rather than retracing our steps through such slow terrain, we returned to our van via gravel roads with a trail shortcut. A dog, Gus, led us for the last 2 km. He seemed very friendly and got a little too close to approaching vehicles, who gave us dirty looks. When we got close to our van, we checked his collar and phoned his owner, who came to get him. If we hadn't found a phone number, he would have come home with us until we could find his owners. We couldn't let a nice dog wander around on an icy road in a remote area.

I wrote the vaccination clinic organizer in Thornbury a few days ago and it sounds like 'Bent and I might be able to help out up here this week.

Brisk catch-up hike with Jackie Tarno, Koko and BazingaDog while 'Bent and Tarno ran with AdventureDog. From the chalet to the ski trails and around the Kolapore Church/Paradise Highway loop. Normally we would stay off the ski trails in late December but our snow dances aren't working yet.

'Bent and I met Dee for a run around Pretty River Provincial Park. Conditions were icy, muddy and very uneven. It was my longest run since... I don't even know. I'll have to look it up. It might have been my longest run of the year? It tested all the things that bother my right Achilles so it will be interesting to see how I feel tomorrow.

It was great to catch up with Dee. 'Bent ran ahead for a while with Mr. Logie, then we met up with him after Mr. Logie had to head home for Dad duty. I missed logging most of it on my Ambit so I borrowed Dee's track.

Merry Christmas to all!

'Bent, the dogs and I went out to clear a section of the Northwest Passage trail that hadn't been checked since the last wind storm. We made it a loop and cleared small debris from trails that had already been checked by another crew.

Last year on Christmas Day, we broke trail through deep snow during a 4+ hour snowshoe trek with the dogs from home to Duncan Escarpment Provincial Park. We didn't see another human all day except on Zoom.

Crossing the river in 2020.

Crossing the river in 2021.

It will come as no surprise that I preferred 2020! Ski conditions are poor. I can't think of a wax that would work. I'd recommend water skis for some parts of the trail.

Trekking (Trail) 59:53 [3] 4.39 km (13:38 / km) +69m 12:39 / km

Family Christmas Eve hike - 'Bent, BazingaDog, AdventureDog and me. It's going to be a very quiet holiday but we've got lots of trails, food, books, games and projects to make it fun. Too bad about the rain tomorrow, though. We'll have a white Christmas but not enough snow to ski or snowshoe.

Big thanks to 'Bent who didn't grow up celebrating Christmas but has tried his best to make it festive for me in recent years since I lost my parents. His fashion choices are inspired.

Report from the Vaccine Clinic:

We are taking walk-ins for 1st and 2nd shots and for kids aged 5-11. No walk-ins for boosters since we can only handle hundreds of people each day, not hundreds of thousands. I'd guess that most clinics take walk-ins for 1st and 2nd shots if you know anyone who is thinking about taking that step in light of the record new case numbers. Those are the immunizations that make the biggest impact.

I spoke with two people getting their 1st shots. One was a professional who would need it eventually to return to the office. The other was an octogenarian who couldn't book or attend an appointment alone, and her next of kin didn't think it was important so a younger friend brought her. There are still unvaccinated people who aren't anti-vaxxers - maybe someone in your orbit who could use your help?

It was oddly quiet for the first 90 minutes then we had a long line-up, as expected. Everyone was cheerful (well, except for some of the kids), polite and patient. Many were happy to chat while they waited. There were a lot of N95 and KN95 masks. I'm required to wear a "baggy blue" surgical mask provided by the clinic but I put it on over my own N95. By definition, everyone I deal with is under-vaccinated.

Many people I talked to - especially the ones under 40 - were computer savvy and talked about how many times they refreshed the appointment booking screen until something popped up. The average person getting a booster at our clinic now is privileged (like most of us here): good technology skills, flexible work hours or retired, access to a vehicle, fluent in English, time to hit a "refresh" button over and over. Most essential workers aren't coming in. The couples who won't see anyone over the holidays are boosted. We have much work to do. Dr. Lawrence Loh, Peel's Medical Officer of Health, is asking younger people to wait and leave appointments for older people - like giving up their seat on a bus.

So far we haven't been hit by the Pfizer shortage but the last shortage in July was the only time our clients got really grumpy. With Moderna's effectiveness reported in the mainstream media recently, some clients seem more open to taking whatever is offered. Until the final 15 minutes tonight, people requesting Moderna were in a much shorter line. I see that some clinics are moving to Moderna only for age 30+, saving the Pfizer for younger people who aren't given Moderna anymore (because of its higher dose and higher chance for side effects, especially in younger people).

'Bent and I did more trail clean-up at Kolapore after Thursday's wind storm. We were assigned the section of Bruce Trail from Grey Road 2 to Metcalfe Rock, which we did as a run/hike with numerous stops. Most of it was clearable by hand so 'Bent used his Sawzall on a bigger log so the chainsaw crew wouldn't need to come.

Trekking (Trail & Bushwhacking) 2:00:00 [1] 6.5 km (18:28 / km) +100m 17:09 / km

Fun exploration of the Swamp Cliffs with Kristen and Aubrey on a beautiful winter morning. Some bushwhacking, some rock scrambling, lots of testing with a long stick to make sure we didn't fall down deep, snow-covered holes in the escarpment. We had the place all to ourselves. I accidentally turned off my GPS so I estimated our distance using a previous track.

'Bent and I were assigned the task of clearing the popular Kolapore Church / Paradise Highway loop on the Kolapore Wilderness Trails after yesterday's wind storm. Someone had already done the same job on Monday after the wind storm on the weekend. Stupid extreme weather.

Some debris was too much for us to remove without a chainsaw and expertise so we took photos and marked the spot with GPS for the trail workers with better tools.

Other debris would have been possible to remove with our hand tools but we were racing sunset so we didn't do it today.

As hikes go, it was a good workout - a brisk pace to get home before dark, hills, rocks, goopy mud, lots of bending down and heaving stuff off the trail. We'll likely be doing more of this; it looks like we won't be skiing here any time soon. :(

Highlights of the day:

1) The heat works in the front part of our house after almost a year.

2) Our small 2-chair deck is almost ready for the building inspector (again) a mere 3.5 years after the contractor started designing it. It's been one of the most soul crushing projects I've ever been involved with. There will be a HUGE celebration around here if/when the permit is closed.

AdventureDog joined me for a run through Palgrave East to the mailbox. The sun had set by the time we got home. Tomorrow we'll find out how my Achilles liked it. So far, it's not too bad but getting out of bed in the morning will be the real test.

Vaccine Clinic Report: People aged 50+ became eligible for 3rd doses today but the provincial booking system crashed and we only ended up booked at about 70% capacity. Given how hard people around the province were trying to get appointments today, it was unbelievable that we could take walk-ins. With Omicron here, I'm all for getting shots into arms as quickly as possible so I texted a bunch of local friends, many of whom came over. Other staff did the same.

As word got out, it ended up being a busy, interesting, rewarding day. The people coming in now are super positive - except for a few of the kids but I'm learning how to engage them better. Most of them like it when I show them suggested poses for our kids' superhero selfie backdrop. Since I can't show a photo of a random child, here are Coach Barrie Shepley (with the cape) and Ward Yorke, father of Olympic triathlete Andrew Yorke.

After yesterday's major wind storm, 'Bent, the dogs and I hiked from the chalet to Metcalfe Rock and back via private trails and the Bruce Trail. Along the way, we cleared a lot of debris and hauled some thick trees and branches off the trail. We'll need to work on clearing the ski trails too. 'Bent was given a Sawzall recently, which isn't ideal for clearing big fallen trees but it's the best tool we have. It took almost half an hour to get this tree off the trail.

Meanwhile back in Caledon, our power was out for 24 hours so we've cleared out some fridge space. :(

Trekking (Trail and Off-Trail) 20:00 [1] 1.6 km (12:30 / km)

Short hike with 'Bent and the pooches, trying to avoid big trees because of the extremely high wind gusts. We ended up in our neighbour's farm field since it seemed relatively safe although it smelled a bit ripe. Then BazingaDog rolled in it and I realized the field had been dressed with manure. Lovely. We're in Kolapore because we'd expected this would be a ski weekend but it went up to 14C today so the ski clubs were closed.

Since we couldn't go into the woods safely, we did a few town errands and house chores, and we talked to our Caledon neighbours where the power has now been out for 6+ hours. Looking at the Hydro One map, there are outages all over Ontario; it's a miracle that we have electricity here. We may have some food to throw out when we get home.

Report from the vax clinic: After several quiet months, we were busy again! I had expected this to happen last week and was quite disappointed then. It's great that people are showing up now! No new age groups have become eligible this week but there's a sense of urgency to get immunized:
- Before Christmas
- Before Omicron takes over
- Before the 50-69 year-olds become eligible on Monday morning.

The bonus is that most adults at the clinic are happy to be there. Some of the kids are proud and excited, especially after their shot. When I congratulate them, almost all of them smile. They like getting their photo taken against the Vaccine Superhero backdrop, which makes them appear to be flying with a cape.

I chatted with three clients who were getting their 1st shot. I thanked all of them for coming and we talked about their rationale. Two of them had to get the shot to keep their job; they were polite but didn't want to be there. The other said he just figured it was time; he'd like to travel someday and he figures it will be necessary. All three seemed a bit surprised that we made them feel welcome and they responded in kind.

Dontgetlost IceBreaker - Mohawk Sports Park, Hamilton

Unbelievably, this was my first orienteering event since last year's IceBreaker and it was great! Veinbuster and I hiked it as a team since it was his first adventure run. He'd done a shorter forest O Cup before but today was a typical DGL brainteaser course design with lots of strategizing and adjusting as we went along. We had fun and made it back with a few minutes to spare. VB did well bushwhacking, slogging through mud and scrambling up hills - all useful skills for orienteering. It was awesome to see people I hadn't seen in a long time and I loved the enthusiasm of all the kids. 'Bent had a good nav race and his knee didn't seem too bad. Before heading home, we made a pilgrimage to Cafe Domestique for a takeout lunch.

The Log Run - Chris Laughren's 45th birthday bash. As per tradition, he and a bunch of friends ran 45 km on trails. They picked up a few more friends, including 'Bent, with 21 km to go. They were supposed to pick up our large group of 10 km runners too, but it was cold and they were ahead of schedule so they were long gone by the time we drove to the start.

I've only done 5-ish km runs for a long time so this was my longest run in many months. I ran/hiked through Terra Cotta with Amber and we chatted up a storm. When we arrived at the Cheltenham General Store, there were hot drinks, baked goods and Christmas gingerbread cookies awaiting us. Then we did an impressive van shuttle back to the 10 km start with 6 humans and two large, wet dogs.

Next stop was the big Badlands Brewery tent, where we had soup or chilli, beer, doughnuts and more in-person conversations with friends than we've had in two years. We were too full for the Briskit food truck but since we'd all sent our expected orders in advance, 'Bent and I thought we should buy hot sandwiches for takeout. Amazingly, we got hungry again in the evening and scarfed them down. Happy Birthday, Chris!

Note

First vaccination clinic with kids *and* 3rd doses for eligible folks. I was looking forward to things getting super busy again but... meh, not so much. The parents who want their young children protected are coming in slowly and talking about keeping Grandma safe at Christmas. However, there was more urgency when teenagers became eligible. The 5-11 age group has the highest COVID-19 infection rate right now and it will take a long time to slow things down if school kids aren't immunized. Fingers crossed, maybe they're getting vaxxed by their family docs instead. On the bright side, most of our clients are happy to be there again - even the kids clutching their cute stuffies. :)

Chag Sameach.
