Trekking (Trail) 1:00:00 [1] 5.0 km (12:00 / km)
shoes: Salomon Speedcross 5 Red

Hike on the Kolapore Bruce Trail with Darcie, 'Bent and 5 pooches. Nice to catch up!

Note

I bought a ticket to the virtual Banff Mountain Film Festival again this year and we started watching last night. It's still possible to buy tickets to the entire virtual festival or to individual programs.

The trailer always makes me want to rush out the door and have an adventure!

Trekking (Trail and Off-Trail) 2:00:00 intensity: (1:35:00 @1) + (25:00 @3) 9.0 km (13:20 / km)

Kolapore trail work with 'Bent, who started the day self-isolating but learned before noon that he'd passed his Covid test:

- Helping 'Bent haul out a large, heavy piece of the old safety cache.
- Improving a bridge on the snowshoe trail by Grey Rd. 2.
- Pruning and clearing debris from the snowshoe trail between the creek and the road.

Lots of gunshots from the shooting club. Monday is the start of deer rifle season and we'll be steering clear for a while.

Note

Tonight 'Bent pulled off the first blacklegged tick of the fall bloom in Caledon. Ugh.

In happier news, my foot doesn't seem worse from yesterday's run. I've booked my first appointment with the physio for shockwave treatment.

Running (Trail & Country Road) 39:39 [3] 5.48 km (7:14 / km) +72m 6:47 / km

Over to Palgrave West on gravel roads, through the conservation area on trails and back on the road - about 50/50 road/trail. My foot is happier on the road and I'm happier on trails so this was a compromise. I've left a voice mail with the sports medicine clinic - time to start using my shockwave therapy prescription.

Timato and Aubrey dropped by for a visit on a sunny Sunday so we hiked over to Metcalfe Rock with the dogs. It's hunting season so we dressed brightly. So great to catch up!

(Both hikes today are logged at less than elapsed time.)

Trekking (Trail) 1:30:00 [1] 7.5 km (12:00 / km) +154m 10:53 / km

'Bent and I headed back out to do some assigned work on the Kolapore Wilderness Trails. We're very proud of our boardwalk improvements. :)

Note

In 2008, I trained and raced ESAR with Canadian landscape artist Cory Trépanier and his brother Carl to help them prepare for a painting and backpacking trip to Ellesmere Island. That was early in his Into The Arctic project, which took him all over northern Canada for more than a decade. He painted almost 100 landscapes that have been shown in a dozen exhibitions in three countries. He created educational modules for schools and made three feature films.

Today was the launch of Cory's Into The Arctic book but it was more than that. It was a ceremony to celebrate his long journey and the significant body of work that came from it. Speakers and attendees included the Lieutenant Governor of Ontario, the Mayor of Caledon, the CEO of the Canadian Geographic Society, the CEO of the Trans Canada Trail, the President of Parks Canada and a smattering of us regular folks. Amongst other things, he was awarded a gold medal from the Canadian Geographic Society, one of their highest honours. It was a special day honouring a special person.

We went into Cory's barn studio to see what he's been working on.

There was a cool forest trail where we found page layouts from the book attached to trees.

And there was the book, of course, which looks fantastic.

Sadly, cancer has consumed a big chunk of Cory's boundless energy lately. We look forward to seeing him at the Grand Finale and Homecoming of Into The Arctic - the last exhibition at Science North from Nov. 13 to Feb. 21. After that, the paintings will be returned to their owners.

Note

As I write this, Reid Coolsaet has just finished a marathon. That may not sound unusual but (a) it took him 5 hrs 18 mins and (b) he still has 30 km to go. He's currently in 5th place in the 72 km La Mascareignes trail run at the Grand Raid on Ile de la Réunion. The Grand Raid course is known to be beautiful and really difficult.

Reid was leading overall for the first 15 km and he's still leading his age group as he runs behind 4 older Masters men. He's finished the biggest climbs and has done almost 2500 m of the 3900 m elevation gain. So cool to watch him kick butt!

Note

Speaking of top runners, 'Bent and I got to meet one of Canada's best trail runners on Sunday. Jeff Campbell, the son of our former neighbour in Collingwood, has an unusual story.

He's a lawyer who moved to Hong Kong in his early 30s. He wasn't an athlete at all but friends there convinced him to join them for some runs where he discovered a natural talent. Shortly after he started, his VO2max was measured at 79 - the highest ever measured at the facility - and after he lost weight, it got as high as 88. At age 39, after only 7 years of running, he has an impressive list of accomplishments in both trail and road running including 2:29 at the Berlin Marathon, 1st at the Hong Kong Half Marathon, 1st in the 100 km Oxfam Trailwalker and many more. If it weren't for the higher priorities of his legal career, wife and daughter, that list would be even longer. It was really fun and inspiring to chat with him.

Running (Trail) 41:54 [3] 5.51 km (7:37 / km) +103m 6:58 / km
shoes: Speedcross 3 Coral-Cherry

It was a spectacular, warm autumn day and I spent most of it indoors due to first world problems:
1) Courier requiring signature, arriving between 8 am and 9 pm.
2) Internet technician arriving in the 12-5 pm window.

It was all done by late afternoon and I decided to try a run through Palgrave Forest to the Reddington mailbox at the edge of the forest. It wasn't much longer than my gravel road run last week but I'm feeling it more tonight. It felt soooo wonderful to be running trails though. I'll see how it feels tomorrow.

Vax Clinic report:

It's been almost 4 weeks since vaccine mandates were implemented in a number of settings in Ontario. More restrictions have been announced since then by private businesses and institutions. The people who waited until now to get immunized had no plans to come in - but at least they're here now.

About 1/3 of today's immunizations were first shots. A few weeks ago, it was around 50% of a bigger number so we seem to be hitting a wall. The people getting 2nd shots now probably got their 1st shots in September.

Some warm, genuine, friendly people still come in. An increasing number seem resentful or grumpy. When I asked, "Hi, how are you today?", there were a few "Terrible" responses. Several people volunteered that they were forced to come.

At least 4 clients said they were afraid - not always people who looked easily frightened. I suspect some of the grumpy people were afraid too. This didn't surprise Dr. 'Bent but I think fear of needles or health care settings is an under-appreciated reason that some people avoid vaccinations.

Trekking (Trail) 35:00 [1] 3.0 km (11:40 / km)

Hike with 'Bent's family and dogs to Old Baldy lookout. The rocky trail had become super wet, muddy and slippery since we test-hiked it two weeks ago. We'd thought it would be fine for a fit 84-year-old but it was like a mucky adventure race. The view across the Beaver Valley was spectacular though!

Trekking (Trail) 45:00 [1] 4.0 km (11:15 / km)

Hike with 'Bent's Mom, sister and brother-in-law, the pooches and 'Bent. I logged an appropriate time for the distance but we were out there longer.

We were lucky with the weather. We had lots of rain and threatening clouds all weekend - although the autumn leaves still looked amazing.

Super busy day getting the chalet ready for our first overnight guests there - 'Bent's family.

It's been driving me crazy not running! The heel drops prescribed by the sports medicine doc have improved my Achilles some. My foot seems to hurt a little even if I just hike so I took a chance and went for a short run today to see if it was any different. So far, so good.

Paddling (Canoe) 1:14:05 [2] 5.76 km (4.7 kph) +10m

After a final breakfast with my brother Dave and partner Tim, we went for a windy canoe paddle up the river from Little Joe Lake toward Lost Joe Lake then we walked the portage to Baby Joe Lake. The big lake was on the verge of whitecaps when we paddled back to the lodge.

Our wedding reception was held in this log dining room built in the 1930s.

Trekking (Trail) 1:00:40 [2] 3.72 km (16:20 / km) +65m 15:01 / km

Very wet hike on part of the Arowhon Pines Orange Trail. It reminded us of the puddles at Storm The Trent! The different kinds of mushrooms were particularly wonderful.

Note

'Bent went for a swim before lunch.

2 PM

Paddling (Canoe) 1:13:03 [2] 6.72 km (5.5 kph)

'Bent and I paddled over to the canoe campsite on Joe Lake where we were married. Someone was camping there, which is usually the case because it's a lovely site. We said a quick hello and continued around the island before heading back.

Mountain Biking (Trail) 1:23:03 [3] 26.21 km (18.9 kph) +45m

Bike ride with 'Bent on the Old Railway Bike Trail in Algonquin Park. It was wetter than we've ever seen it! A fair number of other people were out enjoying the trail before the rain arrived but it didn't feel ridiculously crowded.

Photo at our turnaround point by Whitefish Lake, where we got engaged on skis more than 25 years ago.

shoes: Salomon Speedcross Pro - Red

'Bent turned his ankle last week so he brought poles and we hiked in pouring rain on some of the rugged trails near Arowhon Pines in the Medicine Tree area. We found some huge, beautiful white pines that survived the logging era.

This week Dontgetlost announced that all participants, volunteers, coaches and staff attending any DGL event or in-person meeting must be fully vaccinated unless they have a medical exemption. I'm not aware of any other club with that requirement. Outdoor events could include unvaxed people with little risk but good for DGL for choosing to encourage social responsibility, even if it means losing a few participants.

Their announcement triggered a couple of lengthy Facebook diatribes from a longtime club member and hard core anti-vaxxer who wants freedom without consequences. He rants, "My body, my choice" then makes anti-abortion posts without noticing the contradiction. Le sigh.

Paddling (Canoe) 40:00 [2] 3.5 km (5.3 kph)

Breezy pre-dinner paddle with 'Bent on Little Joe Lake starting at Arowhon Pines in Algonquin Park. Autumn leaves are just past their peak but it's still beautiful up here.

Note

A bat was flying around our living room tonight, probably a Big Brown Bat. I may have shrieked really loudly - over and over and over. 'Bent captured it with a fishing net and cardboard and released it outside, where it flew away. I got to clean up the floor where 'Bent had scared it sh*tless. Public health policy has changed so that rabies shots aren't recommended in cases where there is no known contact with a bat - even if it's possible that the bat was in a bedroom while people were asleep. We're guessing that our bat came indoors when 'Bent opened the inside garage door about 90 minutes before we saw it but we can't be sure. The odds are really, really low but every time I feel a tingle over the next 12 months, I'll be thinking about rabies - yikes.

Today's report from the vax clinic:

- It was steady - busier than we were in the weeks before the Sept. 22 vaccine mandate came into effect and more than twice as busy as we were in mid-August.
- A good percentage of the clients were getting 1st shots - awesome!
- We're starting 2nd shots for people who got their 1st shots as soon as the vaccine mandate was announced.
- We're welcoming more clients who seem unhappy to be there. Almost all of them are polite to staff though. These aren't anti-vaxxers.
- As always, lots of people bring family or friends to support them. In some cases, I suspect the companion was there to make sure the client went through with it.
- Some clients have medical concerns that caused them to wait and some of them don't have family doctors to answer their questions. Luckily, Facebook was down this afternoon so they came to ask our nurses questions instead!
- Almost everyone still chooses Pfizer - even for their 1st shot.

Mostly housework and errands with ‘Bent due to his limp but we did get to meet Ahfré, the cute, strong baby grandson of Coach LD and Goose, so that was a highlight. And we had a *very* long (due to understaffing) patio dinner by Georgian Bay with the Tarnos.

Trekking (Trail) 1:00:00 [1] 3.8 km (15:47 / km) +93m 14:04 / km

Hike at Old Baldy with ‘Bent and the pooches. It’s only 10 minutes away from Kolapore but we haven’t been there for years, in part because of its popularity. It was beautiful but ‘Bent crunched his ankle hard for no obvious reason, which put a bit of a damper on October. The dogs loved it though.
