Note
(rest day)

Packing for The Pig today - and hoping I won't be last in my category in all 3 races, although based on past results of the other competitors, it is a distinct possibility!

Paddling 45:00 [2]
slept:4.0

Hydrospinning Class - Drills & Technique. The 6 a.m. class always seems like a great idea when we sign up, but feels like a horrible mistake when the alarm goes off at 4:20 a.m. Watching sunrise through the big windows in the paddling pool as we get into a rhythm, it starts to feel like an excellent plan once again. By the time we get to Starbucks for the post-class latte and espresso brownie, it seems like a bloody brilliant idea, so of course we sign up for the following week...

Paddling 45:00 [4]

Intervals. Two separate exercises today:
1) Motion of the paddle blade is a "square".
2) Drive the hip first, then the arm follows.
I must have done something right, because paddling is definitely feeling like a full body sport. Oooh, my glutes are sore!

Running 45:00 [4]

Hardwood-Charlevoix trails. Tempted to skip this run due to sleep deprivation, but ThunderDog gave me the Big Sad Brown Eyes treatment. More of the snow in the woods has turned to ice, and more of the ice has turned to mud. Tried to maintain my short course race pace in spite of occasional surprise postholes into mid-calf-deep snow. Felt strong! Time to taper for the weekend now - and drink lots of chocolate milk. (I do sports primarily because I get to eat large quantities of chocolate.)

Trekking 1:15:00 [1]

Hiked in northeast Palgrave with BulletDog, mostly off-trail. Practised navigating using my new "thumbpass", as Bent calls it. It won't feel natural enough yet to use it at The Pig this weekend (should have tried it at Peak-2-Peak), so as usual I will look more like an adventure racer than a real orienteer. Temperature went up to 13C today! It really felt like spring, although the forest floor is still covered with over-the-ankle snow and deer poop (not over the ankle).

Note

New incentive to increase training. Bought a skirt today and fit into size 4 for the first time since university. Am thinking of sewing the tag to the outside of the skirt. :-)

Running long 3:10:00 [3]

Bent and I did an initial loop around Palgrave West with our energetic pooches, then dropped them off at home where they rearranged the furniture in our absence. We continued to Bruce Trail - Reddington - Rail Trail - Albion Hills Red Ski Trail - Duffy's Lane - Palgrave West. Good practice for Giant's Rib Raid. Took a 15-year-old O map of Albion Hills and looked for some features while testing my new thumb compass. Stayed almost entirely on trails today - 80% snow, 15% ice, 5% bare ground or mud. Bent didn't wear spikes, so on the icy hills I cruised up like Spiderwoman while he scrambled through deep snow beside the trail, heh heh. Legs a bit tired from Saturday's O-Fest.

Note
(rest day)

Happy Easter to all. I focused on carb loading - and chocolate loading - today. After all, I am preparing for an event called the PIG.

Orienteering race (Sprint) 39:54 [5] ***

Peak-2-Peak Sprint. Since my preferred race length is about 30 hours longer than a sprint-O, I didn't go into this with expectations of great success, but it was lots of fun anyway. Made a very silly 5-minute error on the way to #3, but otherwise the nav went smoothly. Given the short race length, the routes between a few of the controls should have been fine-tuned, e.g. running around a fence on one side vs. the other. It was a fun course, but very hard work, with steep, slippery hills and heavy snow up to mid-calf depth.

Orienteering race (Score-O) 1:15:00 [4] ***

Peak-2-Peak Score-O. Yahoo! Score-O is my favourite orienteering race format. Well-designed course with racers reporting widely varying route choices. When I signed up for the sprint-O beforehand, I thought it would be about 15 minutes of running - not 40 minutes - so I was pretty toasted before the Score-O began. There was plenty of snow and lots of tree grabbing on the steep, slippery hills. It was a perfect, sunny, early spring day in the woods, so it would have been hard to have anything other than an excellent time.

Orienteering 1:45:00 [2] ****

O-Skool course in Dundas Valley with 'Bent. Practised trying to be more smooth at passing through controls, including proper map folding and taking compass bearings at appropriate times. Got Hammer to provide compass holding lessons (yikes, I still need to learn some of the most basic stuff!). Took advantage of the non-race situation to take our time reading the map and finding features in the complex terrain. Lots more deep snow and steep hills - same as the rest of the day. We have definitely earned the right to take Easter off from training!

Strength & Mobility 30:00 [1]

Miscellaneous strength and stretch exercises in my parents' home gym. Nice to be home for Easter. I even got a chocolate bunny!

Running 50:00 [4]
ahr:150 max:174

Fresh powder snow! 'Bent skied to work, but I opted to run since I have foolishly signed up for my first Sprint O race on Saturday. Conditions ranged from deep, ankle-sucking snow to a light dusting of powder over glare ice. (Whoooops!!) Bruce Trail was nice running. Coyotes and rabbits were active in the forest overnight and, for a change, left no evidence that they were eating one other. Tested my Montrail Kinabalus and confirmed that winter running should only be done in my Ice Bugs (spikes) or Salomon XA Pros with Yak Trax. A girl's got to love a sport where it's acceptable to buy so many different shoes. :-)

Note
(rest day)

Enforced rest day because contractors were in the house all day installing our new solar-powered, forced-air heating vent. Looks very cool, but heavy snow prevented any testing. Hoping for a sunny day and a good run tomorrow, because Good Friday will have to be another rest day.

Mountain Biking (Trainer) 15:00 [3]

Spent 15 min. figuring out the dummyproof "quick release" on Bent's new indoor trainer, then had 15 minutes left to actually ride. As advertised, it feels more like real cycling than any other indoor bike I've tried. But it's still pretty bo-o-oring to bike in the basement!

Strength & Mobility (Machine & Floor) 15:00 [1]

Lower body strength workout

Running 45:00 [4]

Not ideal running weather, but the Giant's Rib Raid is only 19 days away! Hard work slogging through heavy snow (over my knees at one point), and occasional slush, water and goopy mud. Virtuously avoided the fading XC ski trails, which added to the challenge. Sealskinz socks and Ice Bugs worked well. Feet still got damp, but not cold.

Monday Mar 21, 2005 #

Snowshoeing 1:45:00 [2]

Snow too wet (+5C) for skiing and too deep for running, so I went snowshoeing on the 2nd day of Spring! Ran a bit, climbed a bunch of hills, and spent far too much time chasing through the woods after ThunderDog. She was in an independent mood, intent on tracking deer, coyotes and possibly even Hammer. Banged my knee pretty hard on a stealth log. Snow was so wet that even with Goretex shoes, feet got soaked and eventually cold. Wear Sealskinz socks next time!

Strength & Mobility (Machine & Floor exercise) 40:00 [2]

Full upper body workout. Paddling season is fast approaching! 'Bent tried his new bike trainer while I used the weight machine, and boy was he working hard! Looks like it's going to work out well for him. I'll try my bike too, but MTB tires are supposed to be really noisy on a trainer. How will I be able to hear the Comedy Channel?

XC Skiing (Classic) 1:25:00 [2]

1st day of Spring and light snow has been falling all day. This was the 3rd time that I've gone for my "last" ski of the season. Toured on waxless skis around Palgrave West, Hardwood Trail and Charlevoix with 'Bent and pooches. Very good conditions with one surprise when the snow suddenly ran out at the top of a long south-facing slope. Ran up a few hills and felt great, but also stopped for photography. I can't remember another year when we've had 4 months of local skiing.

Trekking 45:00 [1]
(rest day)

Woke up feeling so fatigued that even coffee couldn't help. Maybe should have allowed more recovery time from ARC race? Too much skate-skiing for a beginner? Two nights with <5 hrs sleep? Went for a fun off-trail, hilly hike through the forest with 'Bent, Etoile, Adventure Girl, ThunderDog and BulletDog. Found some *very* deep snow in open areas. Avoided Conservation Area because Hammer was working on GRR course, but had an accidental sighting anyway. Didn't get any hints from it though - darn. ;-)

XC Skiing (Skate) 2:10:00 [4]
max:174

Hardwood Hills - an intensive skate-skiing instructional session with The Minister, an excellent coach with a "Suck it up, Princess" attitude. He chose the hilly Olympic Trail system for teaching, and wouldn't let me use poles for several km. So many little things to remember, but It's starting to come together. HR is high, probably because I'm stroking too frequently. Note to self: remember to push off left foot as well as right.

Thursday Mar 17, 2005 #

Running 1:10:00 [4]
ahr:158 max:177

Several loops around snowy, icy Chedoke golf course plus an escarpment stair climb with the GHO High Performance gang. (I was visiting from GHO's more popular Medium Performance program.) It was good to be pushed harder than I would normally push myself. Ice Bug shoes worked amazingly well. Must look for the Goretex version early next year before they sell out.

Wednesday Mar 16, 2005 #

Running 35:00 [3]
ahr:135

Trail run around west Palgrave with Tobler - short Bruce plus some extras. Deep snow in places added to the challenge, but good running on the BT.

Paddling 45:00 [4]

Hydrospinning class - four 10-minute intervals with rests.

Paddling 30:00 [2]

Hydrospinning Class - technique drills, warm-up, cool-down.

Tuesday Mar 15, 2005 #

Running 1:00:00 [3]
ahr:141

Sunny trail run around west Palgrave with Mocha. Snow deep and heavy in places, but it still felt like the first day of spring training!

Sunday Mar 13, 2005 #

Orienteering race 50:00 [5] ***
ahr:160

Thomass Finale in Bolton - I thought I might do badly because of yesterday's adventure race, but instead I did badly because of 2 costly nav errors! Oh well, it was a beautiful morning to be out.

Running warm up/down 10:00 [1]

Adventure Racing race (Winter) 4:25:32 [4] **

ARC Hardwood Hills winter adventure race - solo category. 10-min nav error in ski section, but had fastest solo time in snowshoe nav section. (Won a case of beer for that!) Treacherous biking on icy roads, so chose an interesting 1/2 hour hike-a-bike route over a big hill on snowmobile trails. Finished the race a few seconds behind the top male solo racer, ahead of 24 other solos. Best race result ever! :-)))
