3 PM

Walking 4:00:00 [2] 12.0 km (20:00 / km) +950m 14:20 / km

Snowdon via Rydr-Ddu path.
Left late with whole family, at halfway it was just C, me & the dog, entered cloud soon after. Heard the train had been stopped and the cafe closed due to the wind. Visibility 25m, which saved me from vertigo on the 1k knife edge. Clung to the pillar in 45 mph, wet wind, reversing back on all fours. Much safer elsewhere otherwise we'd have turned back. Last up on our route (quietest). Both battered and lightheaded on the ridge descent. We wore just enough and cycling jacket remained unused, though their were few places I could have put it on, on the exposed ridge.
Great day and all the more "enjoyable" for the conditions that stayed on the right side of safe and bearable.

Cycling 4:30:00 [2] 31.0 mi (8:43 / mi) +1100m 7:51 / mi
max:159

Betws-y-Coed on road up to Marin Trail-Pont Cyfyng-over the top on footpath-Dolwydellan-6k trail to south-Sarn Helen to Elsi plateau in fruitless search of reservoir.
Best fun I've had on a MTB (Diamondback Heist 1.0) and amazed to find they retailed for £700, until they stopped this year- not making money apparently. 2.4 inch tyres & single chainring. C still managed their 3rd ever chain break and went over his handlebars, at the start of the infamous Marin Trail- we wisely turned back!

Walking 2:30:00 [3] 6.0 km (25:00 / km) +670m 16:03 / km
max:135

Moel Siabod - perfect cloudless day! Took shortest direct route from A470. Brutally steep on tussocky grass, yet safe. Climbing legs like jelly, sometimes zigzagging. Could literally see N Wales. Didn't see anyone until the top, on a Bank Holiday, whilst Snowdon was heaving.

Walking 2:30:00 [1] 6.5 mi (23:05 / mi) +350m 19:46 / mi

Walk up Llyn Elsi Reservoir with C, including steep 130m climb through grotty forest. Walked around reservoir and went for swim too. Good warm up for what turned out to be a veteran/teenager boot camp week
4 PM

Swimming 23:00 [3] 0.7 km (32:51 / km)

Llyn Elsi Reservoir - across and back round the islands, around 14 degs. Getting cold by the end. Mostly breaststroke, which was just as well, as legs were covered in clear slimey algae when I got out- yuck! No lasting damage from algae- well not so far.

Cycling 1:11:00 [3] 19.1 mi (3:43 / mi) +445m 3:28 / mi
ahr:140 max:158 weight:68.5lbs shoes: TCR

Newlands, Coombe & Crocknorth, back via Effingham, TTing without a front light in twilight on 246.
Crocknorth was far easier than I remember.
Skinniest I've been for a couple of decades.

Swimming 20:00 [2] 0.7 km (28:34 / km)

SSP(25) - 75s rather than 50s & 25s. Mild doms from removals.

Pilates/yoga 15:00 [2]

Cycling race 28:58 [5] 10.0 mi (2:54 / mi) +105m 2:48 / mi
ahr:156 max:163 shoes: Giant A1

VCGH TT - 28.58 course PB by 42s! 16 degs, wind 14mph SW, pressure 1005. Wet road.
That went well! Decided to attack the course and make up time where I could. Lost time on the descent that was very wet with some gravel. Best sections were the hill and broken roads, suggesting improved strength. Moved saddle down 2mm and forwards another 4mm.

Cycling warm up/down 25:00 [3] 7.0 mi (3:34 / mi) +50m 3:30 / mi
shoes: Giant A1

12 PM

Body conditioning 1:30:00 [4]

Moving heavy office furniture to new office (took far longer than time recorded). Shock treatment to muscles I wasn't sure still worked, and made easier with someone still in the prime of life!

Note

Saw GP today, who professed not to be an athlete and asked why does a lowered threshold heart rate matter when it ought to be rising? Not sure they were any the wiser, but fingers crossed, they did suggest a better hypertension approach.

Cycling race 26:17 [5] 10.0 mi (2:38 / mi) +80m 2:34 / mi
ahr:153 max:158 shoes: Giant A1

FRC Bentley TT - 26.17 best on course since 2013 which in the conditions was a very big surprise. Direct headwind out av 12 mph, gusting to 20 & 16.5 degs. Paced it well and time passed quickly. 14.10 for 5, 12.07 for 5-10. THR still too low.
Dug out the disc wheel, raised saddle 3mm and forwards by 6mm. Opened up hip nicely, but a shade too high. MIght get my TT mojo back this year after all?

Cycling warm up/down 20:00 [3] 6.0 mi (3:20 / mi) +70m 3:13 / mi

Swimming 20:00 [2] 0.7 km (28:34 / km)

PP(25) - 25s until I relaxed and did some 50s. Note for the future: What you do between strokes makes a difference too.
Broke the golden rule, and more, by clashing hands with a girl going the other way. I apologised, only to discover she had lost her watch as result and neither of us could find it. It was white on white tiles! Later she came back to say it had gone into the next lane and been handed in. Oh, and then there was the locker that I couldn't open. A wee lass opened it for me with a gentle tug.

Cycling 2:55:00 [3] 39.2 mi (4:28 / mi) +1030m 4:08 / mi
weight:69lbs shoes: TCR

Hills! - Didn't fancy the club ride in the 45 mph gusts (just the one broken helmet due to a falling branch!). Thursley to Churt, then 4 x Hammer Hill (90m), then over the Punchbowl down to Thursley, back over again own to Tilford-back over yet again 220m climb (50 to 270). Slow on the descents (wind & debris).
Club BBQ- so many inspirational characters.

Note

Excellent chiropractor session which left me feeling if I can resolve some musculoskeletal issues my cycling will make a significant improvement
1. R glute barely functioning due to tight hip flexor and hamstrings.
2. Twisting of sacral joint due to bias in power from R leg and above.
3. Misalignment below shoulder blades might be because bar is too low.
Given a couple of exercises. Suspect gentle will swimming might help ease 3.

Cycling 1:56:18 [3] 31.0 mi (3:45 / mi) +620m 3:32 / mi
ahr:139 max:153 shoes: TCR

Club Merry Harriers - long circuit, plus a 1.5 mile warm up.
Mistimed wu and arrived back 2 mins after the group left. I'd probably have been dropped in any case.
Forgotten how many 20m steep climbs there were. Felt quite strong which makes a pleasant change. 1.49 on wet roads for the long was still 3mins slower than in 2017, albeit with 2/3 others. Missed some cloudbursts by 10 mins.
Max HR appears subdued of late.

Monday Aug 5, 2019 #

Note

Woke up and found my neck, especially, and back are back in tolerable alignment for the first time in a couple of months. Odd, swimming normally makes my neck worse. Already booked chiropractor.

Cycling 46:30 [2] 8.9 mi (5:13 / mi) +305m 4:43 / mi
ahr:119 max:149 shoes: TCR

RideLondon spectating with the lad.
Parked at Ranmore and stopped above the hairpins on Boxhill by the static camera and then moved to the top where a commentator was almost beside us- trust me not to notice! Great afternoon and best spot by far. About time someone was given a road bike whilst I can still keep up!

Cycling 4:37:00 [3] 80.3 mi (3:27 / mi) +1090m 3:19 / mi
ahr:140 max:154 shoes: TCR

VCGH Mod Ride - Haslemere-Steyning-Shoreham Airport-sea front to Sea Lane (and a sea swim)-Littlehampton-Rewell Hill-Bignor-Selham-Haslemere
Pacy ride to put it mildly, averaging over 20 for first 17 miles (only done that on a TT bike before), nearly 19 to the coast, then 5 miles of dodging people on the promenade and those walking with sticks across main roads(!). Went solo after 57 miles at foot of Rewell.
Stopped to empty bibshorts of shingle and sand, must take baby wipes next time! 2 levels up from normal.
11 AM

Swimming 10:00 [2]

Sea swim at Goring. £3.50 microfibre towel- money well spent! Sea the warmest I've known in the UK at 19.5 degs.
