Orienteering 39:50 [3] 4.1 km (9:43 / km) +95m 8:42 / km
ahr:149 max:163 slept:8.0 shoes: Roclite 275s

Army South Ash - Green 3.3k (A and C maps)
Threw some kit into bag before leaving home just in case a window opened during a chaotic day of hospital visits/discharges. PB for quickest ever time for work-orienteering-work.

Brain not with it, the worst beinga 180 at the start and again on the second map pickup. Body not much better. Went knowing it would be a good destresser. Hope to use the 4 loops for training.

Running hills 55:00 [3] 5.3 km (10:23 / km) +350m 7:48 / km
ahr:137 max:155 slept:8.0 shoes: Roclite 275s

St Martha's Hill - 5 different ways. My best hilly run for around 360 days. Struggled to get my HR up, yet pace was decent by recent standards.

Had to withdraw from the Saunders MM earlier today, so frustrating, but at least it's not me in hospital waiting for an operation for a change.

Saturday Jun 25, 2022 #

Note
slept:4.0

Sobering overnight stay in hospital with sick relative, feet away from some severely ill patients.

Orienteering 43:04 [3] 4.8 km (8:58 / km) +75m 8:19 / km
ahr:158 max:168 slept:7.75 shoes: Roclite 275s

S Bordon - Green 4.0k
1. 20s fell flat on the gravelly tarmac within seconds- chunky gravel rash.
4. 50s - we all agreed the path junction AP was shown 40m closer to control than it was.
5. 1.45 - good leg that tempted me to go straight rather than a long & still tricky route round.
6. 20s - saw depression but not control because someone was standing looking lost in front of it.
25 degs, with enough wind and mistakes to not overheat.

Body feels fully recovered from the BB Ultra.

Warm Up 4:00 [1]

Enough to loosen ankles and calves.

Running (Fartlek) 30:00 [3] 3.5 km (8:34 / km) +80m 7:42 / km
ahr:139 max:149 slept:7.5 weight:71.5lbs shoes: Roclite 275s

Mytchett Fartlek - Within 10 mins it felt hardwork, yet HR remained relatively low. So changed from a steady run to a fartlek. By 20 mins I was struggling, lightheaded and finally nauseous, so called it a day.
Lost a 1kg from before the ultra, been eating well too.

Walking 48:20 [1] 5.02 km (9:38 / km) +25m 9:24 / km

Collecting car from garage.Trotted about a third. Took a wrong turn into a long cul de sac on the board walk.

Orienteering 37:23 [3] 3.7 km (10:06 / km) +60m 9:21 / km
ahr:156 max:166 slept:8.5 shoes: Roclite 275s

Hogmoor MLS Score 23/23 (Planners training courses) Got the lot in 37.23, max 45.
1. (5) - 10s not sure which track I was on.
3. (12/6) - 60s+ Missed, so carried on and came back by it.
5. (17) - 45s+ passed by it and bananned back.
14. (3) - 20s off to R.
20. (22) - 20s long route.

Difficult to maitain a rhythm in a score in such a complex area.
3.5 nins clear of Simon G.

Legs felt fine- it was flat. 28 degs only slowed me in last 5 mins.

Wednesday Jun 15, 2022 #

Note
slept:5.5 weight:72lbs

Recovery below chest has gone well except for swollen R foot y.'day due to tight socks. Main issue not sleeping well. Calf grumbling and so far holding out. Lost weight despite eating well.

Sunday Jun 12, 2022 #

Note
slept:1.5

Drove back arriving at 2.15am and woke at 5am.

Discovered y'day, refuelling and faffling with clothing in an ultra "race" is harder than a MM as you need to keep with a group or in sight. Perhaps one ot two items of real food should be eaten in the first few hours- no idea what slips down apart from homemade rice cakes.

Fell Running race 13:09:00 [3] 54.2 km (14:33 / km) +2750m 11:37 / km
ahr:137 max:160 slept:3.5 shoes: Roclite 275s

BB Ultra - W to E Traverse over the Brecon Summits, 9000 ft climb - Started at the mines W of Black Mountain (in BB) to Talybont.

Start to CP1 (16.5k, 800m) - Started at the back. By 4k caught people I yoyooed the rest of the race with. Around 10k pulled 5mins ahead on descent off Bwlch Gledd, then it was 6k over pathless terrain (half covered in tussocky short billberries) on a 120deg bearing to CP2. Got out compass that I discovered had a bubble & ended up 1.5k offline (won spot prize Race T-shirt for longest route!). Lost 20 mins to group despite fast descent to CP1.

CP1 to CP2 - (6k, 550m) - Started 15mins behind group, pulled back half on descent to CP2 & set off to CP3 with them.

CP2 to CP3 - (9k, 350m) - Couldn't match the others on the ascents losing 5 mins, pegged it back on the small flowing plateau paths/trods.

At CP3 we were late for the cutoff (also at CP2). The official had no phone signal and was enforcing the cutoff. Fortunately, the organisers decided by CP2 the leaders were far slower than expected allowing extensions to the cutoffs at CP2 & 3. One of the girls had a phone with a signal, leaving the official the awkward conversation of telling 4 others who had been retired 20 mins earlier they could continue.

CP3 to CP4 - (16k, 900m). Girls were 10mins quicker on the ascent of Peny Fan. Wind was 35 - 40 on the summits and took 5mins to get jacket on. Left hand v swollen. Caught them & two held runners on descents, then stopped again to get hat & gloves on (not feeling great). Whlist faffing the back marker appeared & told me I could contour round the next 150m summit with a few others. Towards the end of the ridge path all 7 of us (including runners held) formed one long snaking group. Having caught them again, I stopped for a gel (lightheaded). The whole lot bananned back within two minutes & decided to follow a lower path, I decided to take the path they rejected with 15m more climb on a good path & went from last to first. Then pulled 5 mins clear descending to CP4 & ran through it and was out of sight in the woods when they started trickling in to CP4 and was 15 mins ahead by the finish, just 3.5k further down the valley.

Had a 15+ lightheaded spells, some lasting up to an hour & nausea 3 times. Gels worked well, though most were probably caused by afib. Was going to pull out twice and after making up time on the descents to CP and a cheerful chat, carrying was the obvious thing to do. Calf started to twinge near the end so couldn't "run" on rocky paths, then eased on grassy paths & was fine on the gravel paths at the end.

Excellent route, the first half favoured orienteers over trail runners. BBUltra plan to have a winter race over the same route. It will make the Montane Goat like a picnic(!) with more climb in 2/3 of distance.

Note

Saw chiro (Robert) for 45 mins. He couldn't believe anyone could be so stiff/tight in their hamstrings and lower back. R glute poorly firing, plus he did a brief massage of R calf. Hopefully, with the flossing it will help this w/e.
Changed mind and will "run" on Saturday- hopefully longest ever time wise.

Body conditioning 15:00 [0]

Body conditioning 20:00 [0]

From past experience it feels like a trapped nerve, so flossing leg nerves 3-4 times a day.

Tuesday Jun 7, 2022 #

Note
slept:8.5 (injured)

Nerve in calf inflammed, so possibly little muscle damage. Needs raising & resting regardless.

Walking 21:00 [1] 2.1 km (10:00 / km) +80m 8:24 / km
shoes: Roclite 275s

St Martha's Hill - 10mins walking, then 50% slow running.
Calf felt tight as I got out of the car so walked for 10 mins and called it a day after some trotting as it didn't improve. Awful timing, a week after finding MM partner and entering SLMM.

Friday Jun 3, 2022 #

Running (Fartlek) 46:00 [3] 5.25 km (8:46 / km) +195m 7:23 / km
slept:8.75 shoes: Roclite 275s

Punchbowl Fartlek - mixture of fartlek terrain run, fence climbing, bracken flattening and 50m hill intervals. Wanted to wake up every muscle group at different paces to avoid getting stuck in "ultra" shuffle mode- worked.

Note

Not enough early nights this week given lack of sleep and physical weekend.
