Badminton 1:20:00 [2]
shoes: Carlton Airblade

Got to Bennachie ready for a run but had forgotten trainers! Doh!
Fall back plan of badminton - back aching throughout but not compromising movement as much as expected. I really don't understand my back whatsoever.

Scottish Relays Balmoral

Ad hoc team with BOK - me on first leg.
Misses at #2 (high) and #8 (west) plus poor route to #9. Generally a lot better than yesterday but there were several reused controls and lots of common controls between courses so not entirely unexpected. Off the pace but quite enjoyed it nonetheless.

Looong for back. Stretches instead of WU map - shame I didn't know in advance and make time for it as evidently brain needed warming up...

Scottish Champs Balmoral

Disastrous first half of the course - just a bit sad really regarding my lack of technique.

#1 'Plan' was to head up through the less rocky area and look for flag. Not much of a plan. It was all rocky so went further along path than intended and eventually just headed in randomly. Eventually came across control on tree; relocated as being SW rather than SE of control and headed off in wrong direction once more. Blundered around a little longer before spotting Ed Nicholas (4mins) punching. Oops [4mins]
#2 Looked at compass (!) and on better line. Stopped at veg boundary as it all seemed open to me - bit of a hesitation then onwards [40]
#3/#4 Gave myself a bit of a talking to and actually did these ok.
#5 Stopped being careful after a couple of better controls - couldn't come up with a good plan so went with none at all - just headed off. Crossed an obvious ride and became worried I was in the OOB (I wasn't). Nothing to relocate from - should have just gone north but inexplicably retraced steps east then north, eventually coming in via veg boundary and trees - trivial from that direction... [6m 40s]
#6 Fine.
#7 Not following map enough - tried to relocate and head in, but then drawn to several wrong boulders in sequence [2m 20s]
#8-#11 Made plans and stuck to them - fine.
#12 Plan was bearing - good initially but then lost confidence as all runners around me were heading off to the right. Sheep mentality... [60]
#13 Slog.
#14 Ok.
#15 Too difficult to make a plan = head in general direction and hope to relocate nearby. General direction was good and it nearly worked, but spotted wrong flag when nearby and found #18 instead. However, read code as correct (it was on the list!) so carried on; only realising when spotting errant wall... [4m 50s]
No more significant problems thereafter - few bits of pieces but generally just trying to keep going as getting pretty tired. Ended up doing almost 25% extra distance - not ideal when straight was usually great...

7th of 10.

Badminton 1:20:00 [2]
(injured) shoes: Carlton Airblade

Awoken during night by back and couldn't get back to sleep. Niggling pain rather than severe discomfort though. Researched and subsequently tried some upper back exercises and stretches and got through day ok, by which time it had eased a little. Figured some gentle badminton might improve it further (possibly foolish?) Possibly helped and followed with marathon stretch session in the evening. Still niggling though...

MAROC Tilquhillie - Orange Forest Sprint

Did ok though never moving especially fast. Some nice bits of forest.
Lost some time on #1, but looks like most people picked up their maps before they started...

Orienteering 14:05 [1] 1.61 km (8:45 / km) +46m 7:39 / km
(injured) shoes: Integrator March 2016

Started extended warm down, but not long after pulled something in upper back and came to a grinding halt. Concerning as should have been fully warmed up by this point and wasn't doing anything particularly stressful...

Note

Travel to Aberdeen but had to stop off for work at Dumbarton and was delayed quite a bit so didn't really have time to stop off in Deeside for pleasure :(
