Scottish Champs Balmoral
Disastrous first half of the course - just a bit sad really regarding my lack of technique.
#1 'Plan' was to head up through the less rocky area and look for flag. Not much of a plan. It was all rocky so went further along path than intended and eventually just headed in randomly. Eventually came across control on tree; relocated as being SW rather than SE of control and headed off in wrong direction once more. Blundered around a little longer before spotting Ed Nicholas (4mins) punching. Oops [4mins]
#2 Looked at compass (!) and on better line. Stopped at veg boundary as it all seemed open to me - bit of a hesitation then onwards [40]
#3/#4 Gave myself a bit of a talking to and actually did these ok.
#5 Stopped being careful after a couple of better controls - couldn't come up with a good plan so went with none at all - just headed off. Crossed an obvious ride and became worried I was in the OOB (I wasn't). Nothing to relocate from - should have just gone north but inexplicably retraced steps east then north, eventually coming in via veg boundary and trees - trivial from that direction... [6m 40s]
#6 Fine.
#7 Not following map enough - tried to relocate and head in, but then drawn to several wrong boulders in sequence [2m 20s]
#8-#11 Made plans and stuck to them - fine.
#12 Plan was bearing - good initially but then lost confidence as all runners around me were heading off to the right. Sheep mentality... [60]
#13 Slog.
#14 Ok.
#15 Too difficult to make a plan = head in general direction and hope to relocate nearby. General direction was good and it nearly worked, but spotted wrong flag when nearby and found #18 instead. However, read code as correct (it was on the list!) so carried on; only realising when spotting errant wall... [4m 50s]
No more significant problems thereafter - few bits of pieces but generally just trying to keep going as getting pretty tired. Ended up doing almost 25% extra distance - not ideal when straight was usually great...
7th of 10.
