Northern Champs / WRE Mulgrave Woods

Slightly apprehensive beforehand - right ankle still not brilliant and back has deteriorated slightly again of late (all the driving recently perhaps?) Treacherously slippery slopes and a fair amount of brash were far from ideal conditions in this regard. Wore both ankle supports.

Set off ok actually and clean through first 4 controls.
#5 Dropped too low en-route (blase as it was similar to #1) [80]
#6 Went out to northern path but it was very slow across the stream gorge (I had missed the contours). The straight route was also one of the better bits of forest (as I found out on #8) [130]
Saw 3min man (Lindsay) catching me.
#7 Cursory map reading again; not noticing valley between path and control [45]
#9 Think I chose the best route, but did come to a halt en-route to double check that using the tunnel wasn't better. Tweaked left ankle (doh) and almost missed path near end of leg [45]
#10 Stuck in grot taking direct route across to tunnel, Lindsay got ahead [40]
#11-#16 Chasing Lindsay and OJ until they got away.
#18 Not sure of best route here. I was especially slow down steep slope from ridge to drinks serve yourself - wonder if anyone bothered? [40]
#22 Had held Ben Mitchell off from #19 to just before #21. I headed off through #18 on a good line for this leg but he was way right. Saw green tree on slope to my right and these two factors convinced me I needed to head further east. Not making much sense but used top of hill. Eventually realised where I was; not happy [150]
No more errors thereafter but was spent physically.

Proper tough race; enjoyed!

11 of 14 but only 119% of WT.

Brief outing at Hugset - sadly it was all mud and brambles. Gave up. Ankle dodgy to start with in O shoes so wore supports for the first time in an age.

Working near Newcastle - down the beach at Blyth and back through the dune complex. Ok, dune system. Ankle seemed ok in trainers.

Attempt 3 at Mobile-O; Creag Choinnich, Ballater.

The app is poorly designed meaning I lost the pre-loaded map not long after starting (brushing the screen in the wrong place is all it takes...). Decided to run to the top of the hill where there was miraculously a sliver of 3G signal to reload it. Sadly the app is very battery hungry and shortly afterwards my phone died. To compound matters I tweaked my right ankle descending through rock and had to hobble back. Not happy.

In future I will prepare better and bring a proper map!
