Note

Up to Broxburn. Stomach cramps so ate early but that didn't appease it.

Orienteering race 1:30:29 [4] *** 11.98 km (7:33 / km) +308m 6:42 / km
spiked:20/25c shoes: Integrator Oct 2013

SYO Wharncliffe Black

Nice area (despite the ankle breaking underfoot conditions) and a great course. Not a bad run; would have been happy had I avoided my one major error towards the end.

Hesitant to #1, not having noticed the start flag, but better than some (20s).
#2 Lucky to hit the wall / path junction on the line, but still hesitant up the re-entrant as it seemed further than I had envisaged (10s).
#3 Heading almost due east from #2 and then approaching #3 from below meant quite a lot of rock that might have been better avoided (30s).
#4 Wasted time messing around with a bearing when I should have just got my head up (10s).
#5 Went along the contour which was slow; path better. Also looking a little high initially; Richard Foster led me in (40s).
#6 There seemed to be better lines to my left (10s).
#7 Climbed early out of #6 and used the edge of the wood and open land towards the end of the leg. Can’t have been too bad from the split.
#8 Assisted by competitor ahead of me popping out of it.
#9 Up to the building then straight. Path better? (10s)
#10 Too far west and a little low (20s).
#11 Path, then up the re-entrant; but seemed to lose time to Jeff Colbert behind me who went straighter (10s).
#12 Out to the path at the start of the leg when straight was better. Went in early towards the end of the leg and got stuck in a load of rock (more than usual!) (45s).
#13 Bananed around a bit but regained my composure eventually (30s).
#14 Contoured /climbed slightly pretty much all the way. Fastest split so must have been ok.
#15 Lots of unmapped rocks here which had me cursing. Overshot path slightly too (20s).
#16 Once I picked up the veg boundary this was fine.
#17 Went in off the bush to the east of the line which despite entailing a bit of extra climb meant I hit the control well.
#18 In from the big rock, head to the easternmost rock!
#19 Head up.
#20 Biggest mistake. Stopped a little short as there was an extra unmapped section of wall. Shouldn’t be relying on just one feature... (1m 40s).
#21 Along the re-entrant then attacked from the big boulder.
#22 Parallel error on the previous hill next to two boulders. (20s)
#23 Keep your head.
#24 Used the bush.
#25 Trivial.

Finished 4th, but only 3m 45s down. That'll do!

Headed out to Hesley and Parkin Woods for a bit of training. Mostly a map run, trying to read as much detail as possible.

Away Match vs Staincross C playing with Alan.
Hadn't played for a week, two weeks since I had a game with feathers, and it showed. Serve was dire.
Nevertheless this was their third string so we still managed to beat all their pairs 2-0. Our closest match was actually the first against their 3rd pair; we evidently took a while to warm up. The latter games were actually fairly comprehensive wins (something like 8, 11, 10), although admittedly this was largely due to an inspired Alan at the net.
Brent / Tom and Mick / Sam also cleaned up; 9-0 victory.
