SINS Day 2 Hopton

No real errors for the first six (slight miss to the west on #2, relocated on seeing fence, 15s) and in 2nd place at this point about 30s down.
Tried to contour to #7 but there was a lot of grot underfoot and ended up losing all the height. I am convinced that going straight up to the path and round was the quickest route here (1m).
Following the above I took the path route to #8. This was quick (2nd fastest split) even in spite of making my way part way along the wrong path initially, before fortunately checking my compass (20s).
Walked much of the hill to #10, but took the opportunity to plan most of the rest of the course.
Possibly due to the above planning (or just luck?) fairly good through the next section. 20s off Llewellyn, 1s off Romualdas and 25s ahead of Schorah overall at #16. (3m 20s off Ben Stevens...)
Biggest miss of the day on #17 where I initially looked in the correct re-entrant but didn’t see the flag (cunningly / unfairly placed behind a tree). Eventually located the control after I approached from the opposite direction. (1m 10s).
Poor route choice appears to have cost me time to #20: I went all the way around, chickening out of the steep climb on the straight line. Llewellyn took 2m out of me here, so perhaps 1m 45s lost.
Last section ok.

Seemed to be surprisingly close to the pace of the top guys today (even acknowledging their errors). Not sure why.

SINS Urban Ludlow

Summoned up some energy for this. Possibly assisted by catching some fellow Course 1 competitors half way around.

Noteworthy moments:
#8 Route choice seemed 50/50 and I took the more interesting route to the north. Splits say this was an error. 30s
#10 Map wasn't correct to the southwest of the control (too little space to display all the walls?) and I dithered accordingly. 20s
#11 Assisted by revellers in locating narrow steps. -5s
#13 Caught out by the trap. 15s
#14 Caught rcro and Gidley here which spurred me on.
#20 Unsure of route (climbed through grot), also slight hesitation but read description just in time (under bridge). 20s
#22 Fastest, taking 38s out of winner!

The biggest puzzle is how the guy who won is so slow in the forest!

SINS Day 1 Croft Castle

Set off steadily. No real errors for the first four, though possibly a little hesitant. Contouring to #4 seemed to work ok (though it might have been quicker to drop down onto the path?), but in any case decided to carry on towards #5, saving a significant amount of climb. Unfortunately the trods quickly became more indistinct and undulating. The brambles also proliferated and I ended up having to climb anyway... I then compounded matters by overshooting the control (though I felt that the perimeter of the gorse was rather approximately mapped). 4m lost.
Hurrying towards #6 I ended up following the main path right up the hill, adding unnecessary climb and distance, although it made the control simpler to find. A further 1m.
Ok to #7, but for #8 my distance judgement was woeful as I started looking way too early. 30s more gone.
Took a middling (poor) route to #9 which was neither round nor straight, and involved crawling through some gorse... 1m 30s.
Biggest time loss on #10. Initially looked at attacking from the top of the hill, but decided that using the small crag adjacent to the main path would be safer. Unfortunately I never saw the crag and overshot. Meandered back checking lots of likely looking spots on the way... 6m
Fortunately the rest of the course was more pleasant, and I didn't lose too much time; the biggest probably being 30s or so on #14 where I overshot the gully.

Enjoyed the first bit plus the second half. Did not enjoy the common section at all.

13m 30s of obvious errors. Ouch.
