Orienteering race 1:08:31 [4] 8.86 km (7:44 / km) +282m 6:40 / km
shoes: New Integrator

DVO Black Rocks and Cromford Moor
Nightmare on the Brown.
Llewellyn was chasing me down, but instead of calmly executing sensible routes I decided to dash madly around. No idea what was going on for the first couple and was lucky to hit #1 ok and not lose much on #2 (15s).
For #3 I headed the wrong way down the path and had to climb up again, through loads of grot (1m 20s).
Fortunately #4-#6 were all trivial. However, still not paying attention; #8 was frankly embarrassing. I was initially searching in the wood rather than the open (??), eventually worked it out as Llewellyn breezed past, but then the control wasn’t on the edge of the open as marked, rather 25m inside the boundary... 10m lost, yes, ten minutes.
#9-#12 largely ok, but for #13, when on the correct ride, I decided I was on the eastern incorrect one and looped into the section adjacent to the wrong field (1m)
#14 ok, #15 overshot slightly. Realised, but hesitant as I headed back along the re-entrant (20s).
#16-#18 ok but a bit lucky; no plan for #18 at all.
#19 Dodgy control site; contours were suspect and unmapped large crag below made me very hesitant (20s).
#20 Fortunate that another competitor ahead went low, alerting me to this superior route.
#21 Worked hard up the hill but faffed around the multiple rock features in the circle (15s).
#22 Set off towards #23 and almost missed this out but recovered just in time (10s)
#23-F Had a stitch here and was struggling up the hill.

Seemed to be running surprisingly well (late start probably helped), shame I don't actually know how to navigate.

Finished 7th, 11min down.

Llewellyn: you queried when the last time I made a 10min mistake was; not that long at all...
Try February for a couple of 14min beauties:
