Orienteering (hanging controls) 1:55:15 [2] 5.09 mi (22:38 / mi)
ahr:105 max:138 shoes: VJ Falcons 2022

Hanging Controls for North Oakridge PWF summer series event I was hosting. Woods were nice. I got off a little on one control but most were ok. Spent some time just deciding where the control should be hung since I hadn't checked the areas before I need to be sure I was hanging things in the correct spot.

Orienteering (mapping) 1:30:31 [1] 2.03 mi (44:35 / mi)
ahr:98 max:147 shoes: VJ Falcons 2022

After hanging controls I went out and mapped a chunk of the map that had never been field checked. Field checking isn't perfect but does better show what is there. It isn't likely this section of the map will be used but still good to close out the edges just in case.
I had to scramble back to be ready to host the summer series.

Rt 175 + 2 park grass loops (my normal run now since it is all on grass except crossing some driveways). Started out a little faster because I felt good then settled down into a more normal pace.

Mapping section of Bacon Ridge. It took much longer than expected. I was mapping a section of ditches near the property line. Looks like property owners are claiming much more property then the county shows. I did update the property line a few areas where I had it a little off.

Checked out new area of map. It is a flood plain so the lower section shouldn't be used which is what I wanted to deteremine. What I had mapped as a lake looks like a very large marsh.

Mapping Bacon Ridge. It was cooler day out so I though I would get a start on doing Bacon Ridge. I had walked the trails before but that was before I had a proper base map. I had to correct the trails as well as add features. One new trail added.

I had planned to go for a run after mapping but I was tired and hungry so didn't. Instead I just drove home.

Orienteering 1:15:02 [5] ** 9.0 km (8:20 / km) +135m 7:45 / km
ahr:148 max:163 shoes: VJ Falcons 2022

Beer chase. Courses set by Nadim. Weather : sunny 70 degrees at start and warming up as the time progressed, with a light breeze.
This is the only time I drink alcohol. Note, there is an option to drink Beer/Water/Soda (although they forgot to buy the soda this time). These are really separate races as drinking a cup of Beer is very different from drinking a water. Results really should show what category people were in.

Competition looked very tough this year with several tough competitors, both local and non local attending. This event favors the runners over the orienteers so it was going to be a tough day.
After my horrible performance at the BillyGoat I was looking for some payback so was planning to run hard although I still figured I would finish pretty far back. Tentative plan, Drink Fast, Run Fast, and rely on my extensive map knowledge to keep me faster.

Overall, I did not like the course. Too many repetitive controls and too many doglegs. This made it even more a runners course as you could see people entering and leaving the controls, and going to same control over and over just took away all the navigation.

S-1: I was one of the fastest drinkers as always, but was slow off the line this time. I coulnd't find #1 on the map, I could see #7 and #14 . Finally I just started heading to 7 figuring Course Setter got the maps out of order for us. While running down the road someone else also said they couldn't find #1 and I agreed. Boris pointed out that it was just past #7. I looked again and what I saw as #14 was actually a dual control 1/4 (#1 and #4). Followed everyone to it. I was already out of breath having run the road. Quite a few people in front of me.

1-2: Cut to trail. Trail to powerline which was cut so was easy running, cut inot the woods and look for control. I was little off.

2-3: everybody else was drifting right. I went straight and spotted the control. I made up a ground on this leg and get ahead of a bunch of people.

3-4: Back to the control we had already been to. Just run that direction. Crossed the dry marsh. I was south of control just behind Ken Walker and we had to cut north.

4-5: followed Ken out to the field which was a mistake I realized as soon as we did it. As we got to the road others behind us were no ahead of us. Down road and cut in. Hesitant on approach.

5-6: Straight. I know this area so was confident I would see the control and i did. I think I made up some ground on this one but still behind the main pack.

6-?: Run to the Beer Stop. As I am running in others are running out so I am back a bit. My cup was quite full and had a lot of foam on it which made it tough to guzzle.

9-10: As i was running away I could really feel it sloshing in my belly. I still had people in my sights until we entered the woods. At this point I realized that the new map started at control 1 instead of #9 which meant that It no longer matched the clue descriptions on my wrist. I tried to figure out which clue was next but just gave up and didn't read clue descriptions for the rest of the race. I just assumed I was at the correct control each time. After entering the woods, I lost site of everyone else. I went straight and pegged the control. It helped that there were other people (other courses punching it).

10-11: Straight through the woods. Group ahead of me took the trail around which was faster. I messed up at the end by jumping off the trail too soon which delayed me. When I got to the control I was just behind Sergei.

11-12: Control 11 was multiple loop control. I coudn't tell what line I was supposed to follow so lot a bunch of time trying to figure out what control. I didn't know what number of control I had just punched so didn't know what number of control was next. Sergei got ahead of me. Control was further off the reentrant than I expected but I could see everyone running away from it as I approached. Ken Walker just in front of me.

12-13: Ken took a right route where I went straighter. As I got closer I could see Jon Torrance.

13-14: Jon and I running together to same control already been to. Got there just behind Ken Walker. No problems.

14-15: Followed Ken out. Meant to go straight but we went out to the road (oops).

15-16: Straight. hesitant on final approach. Got there just behind Jon Torrance.

16-17: Running behind Jon. I am really tired but try to keep up. Back to the control we have been to several times. Easy Navigation. According to Attaackpoint I am in 7th place.

17-18: Followed Jon, cross stream, up to trail, down trail cut corner to other trail, across bridge. Started running down vally but running didn't look good so I cut up the hill, and saw Jon doing the same thing. Got to control just ahead of Jon.

18-19: Just started more left then I did but we crossed patsh again closer to the control.

19-20: head to drinking area. Came out by the barn as I intended to do.

Another foamy cup of beer.

21-22: back to another control I had already been too. I aimed off right slightly and when hit the stream turned left. At this point I am by myself.

22-23: I try to keep running knowing Jon is Behind me. I drift right and hit the shallow hill but all I see is unmapped green. Jon Catches up to me while I am thinking. I finally push into the green and then hit the marsh, on far side of the marsh I see control. Jon just behind me.

23-24: I go running off. Jon is drifting left (actually I am drifting right). I cross the marsh but it is the wrong one and have to cut south to the control. Jon there ahead of me. Rest of the course is run with Jon.

24-25: Back to control already been to twice. Easy control. Just behind Jon.

25-26; Another Repeat control. Jon Faster up the hill and get there a bit ahead of me.

26-27: Straight

27-28: back to common control. Jon run along the right side of the stream, I cross over and run along the left. I get there just ahead of him.

28-29: Race to the barn. Jon right behind me. I take left trails in and jon doesn't. I punch control expecting Jon right behind me but who do I see but Ken Walker and Jon.

29- finish: Having the few steps advantage, I race to the finish. Fortunately the drinking area is clear so I don't lose time. Manage to stay ahead of Jon and Ken for a 4th place finish overall.
