Orienteering (green X) 1:19:18 [3] *** 6.8 km (11:40 / km) +255m 9:49 / km
ahr:145 max:170 slept:8.0 shoes: VJ Falcons 2021

Traveled 5.86 miles or 9.7K for the 6.8K course. I am glad I dropped down to Green for this event. I would never have lasted for a Red course.

Course was not very good and very subject to "luck" factor. Many control sites used by multiple courses so there were lots of people in some areas which could help some people get lucky at the control. There were also some dog legs.

start - 1: Very technical right out of the start. Listed as middle reentrant in a circle that contains a bunch of tiny reentrant. I saw the clue description was bottom part so I finally went down a reentrant and attacked from the bottom. Had to then climb right back out of the very steep reentrant. Not a good control location.
1-2: Went trail around but I cut up the side trail over the spur and back to the trail. Cut down the hill at the first trail bend around the reentrant. First chance in the woods. The mountain laurel is definitely slow moving. There are also a lot of down trees so you can just bash you way through.
2-3: down the reentrant. Map has it as light green but there were so many down trees that it was hard to run. Had to run around things crawl over/under them (very hard my my back muscle which was hurting doing all the bending over. As I got to 3 there were 3-4 people coming in right behind me. Another dog leg getting out of the control.
3-4: Though about going straight buy was now shy of reentrants and thick woods. I went trail part way around cutting the corner. Led about 3 people to the control.
4-5: Woods to thick to run through and hill to big to go over anyway so I tookd the trail around. At one point my watch said was running my normal 8:30 mile pace down the road. Some hesitation on the final approach.
5-6: Knew this would be a risky control. I didn't peg the control and then wandered. Looking for control in the green. There were about 10 people wandering around looking for the control. When I finally found it I almost ran right by it as it was tucked behind a bush. Lost a bunch of time.
6--7: Very slow getting through the green.
7-8: Out to the road. I couldn't find a way into the woods across the road. Had to run up the road to find a break in the green. I got to high. When I hit the reentrant I adjusted but apparently didn't correct enough and was now past the control. Didn't see the ride. Went further east. When I saw deer corn feeder I thought it was the stone pile. I went back the way I came. Finally saw a line of people running up what I determined was the ride. They stopped when they saw me. I ran down the bend to confirm where I was then went to the control. All the people on the ride followed me to the control. I lost lots of time but saved them lots of time.
8-9: Took the road all the way around the bend. Line of people behind me following me.
9-10: Contoured tot he big trail then followed it down hill to the bend area. I didn't see the other smaller trail out of the pool area. Like many of the controls, a lot of people were going to/from the depression which wasn't a depression but a marshy area.
10-11: I was a little low on the final approach.
11-12: To the clearing and down to hill to the stream. Up stream to the reentrant.
12-13: Made a minor mistake climbin and extra spur.

Orienteering race (green sprint) 14:39 [4] 2.1 mi (6:59 / mi) +15m 6:49 / mi
ahr:146 max:154 shoes: nike blue flyknit

Bellevue State Park, Green X sprint. It was cold out in the morning but warmed up quickly once the sun cleared the trees. I wore a long sleeve shirt but would have been fine with a short sleeve. My shoulder/back muscles still bothering me but it didn't interfere while running which was good.

Start- 1: I spent so much time warming up that I neglected to pay attention to where we are in the park. I had trouble finding the start trouble and was heading off in general direction everyone else was going which was the off 30 degrees. Once I correct I was fine.
1-2: Went right around the tennis courts. no problems
2-3: Straight. no problems
3-4: narrowly avoided colliding with a Blue runner as we both barreled around the corner of the building. I went left around the buildind and got a little off entering the woods. It was stony there Hit trail by #5 and had to come back to the control.
4-5: Once I got the trail I could see the control. I should have looked up sooner.
5-6: Went left of line to get the field quickly. Control description seemed off. It was listed as canopy but I don't think there was one. fortunately I could see it up the steps so didn't lose any time.
6-7: There was a stone wall that is very hard to see on the map. I should have gone right around it but went left by the larger stone wall. As I was leaving it Clint Morse comes running towards me trying to get a picture. He was in my way and totally distracted me. I lost my place on the map and then floundered. Instead of going to the control I ended up at control 8. Quickly realized what I had done and ram back (but didn't take a good route).
7-8: went back the way I cam which wasn't the best route.
8-9: Straight to edge of parking lot into field, down small trail. Several people coming out as I was going it.no problems.
9-10: I should have gone straight but I let the vegetation push me right and had to cut back to it.
10-11: Straight (left side of building. no problems.
11-12: Clint distracted me again by running towards me. This time I told him no pictures (I don't mind the picture but I don't want people running towards me as it is one more thing I have avoid in covid times. After that some group had set up all these tables right in the optimum path. I ended going way left to avoid them all.
12-13: Straight. No problems.
13-14: I went right around lake. in hindsight, left was faster. The final approach to the bird feeder was through bushy high grass which was difficult to run through.
14-15: straight

except for the distractions I had a good run. Not the fastest but about as good as I was going to get. The distractions ended up costing me 2nd place.

Orienteering race (Green X short) 29:41 [3] 3.3 km (9:00 / km)
ahr:142 max:170 shoes: VJ Falcons 2021

I was more worried about my shoulder/back muscle this race as there was increased likelihood of having to duck down more. Fortunately it didn't bother me while running.

I wandered the sample map warmup and was worried. There didn't seem to be consistency. One small dip area was unmapped but in antoher it was mapped as a ditches. I found a major boulder not on the map. The boulder clusters were almost always smaller than the boulders (but they looked bigger on the map). I was discussing Keg and we noticed that my printer didn't print the green appropriately. The light green was basically missing from my map. That worked to my advantages on the course as you could ignore the light green. I think they over mapped the green.

Start to 1: I didn't have a good plan and it showed. I was very hesitant and slow. I pulled up short but then just kept going until I could see the out of bounds area. The way I went I should have taken the road.

1-2: settled down.I was going to take the left trail around but I climbed to much leaving 1 and hit the trail higher up so went the right way around. I read the trails fine.

2-3: Straight
3-4: I pulled up short. I think I counted the north line as a stream to cross so got confused. I think this is the leg I saw some extra root stocks. Just kept going and got there.
4-5: Straight. I drifted right at some point. Finally just ran to the trail backstop and cut up to the control.
5-6: Left trails around.
6-7: Straight. I was very hesitant but eventually got there.
7-8 Straight.
8-9: I went south on the trail around the pond, to the parking lot/road in.
9-10: messed this one up. I was going to go straight but then saw the disc golf fairway. I should have taken it all the way but I started zig-zaggin the fairways and missed on. I was lucky to end up at 11 so I knew where I was. Cut back to 10,
10-11: then back to 11.
11-12: straight
12-13: aroung the green to the right then cut up the trail to the open/scattered trees. Ran hard to finish.

Except for 1 and 10 I had very good run. Not always fast but a good run.

Volleyball (indoor) 1:00:00 [1]
shoes: VB : hyperdunk low

I have a shoulder/neck muscle that has been bothering my the last few days. I was worried about how it would feel at volleyball. I was right to worry. It hurt whenever I had to hit overhand (like serve, spike, or block). Becuase of this I played poorly, not just overhand hit but normal bumps also. Even more unfortunately the rest of my team sucked also. We got killed the first game and lost badly the next two. Now my muscle is even more sore. Doesn't bode well for Saturday orienteering.
