9 AM

Running warm up/down 12:00 [2] 1.41 mi (8:30 / mi)

Pretty decent w/up as I watched Luke win the M10 NA championship and Zach grab second in M14.
10 AM

Orienteering race 17:09 [5] 2.6 km (6:36 / km)

NA Sprint Championship at a "college" in Cranbrook, BC.

Great event. The start and finish were actually on the track, which meant the bleachers served as a great spectator point. I had a very rough outing, though. I fell in the woods on the way to C1, and mildly knocked the wind out of myself. Then I also fell going to C2 and though it was less painful, it caused an error, as when I got back up, I could see a flag up a bit on the right, so I ran to it, but it was C3. I ran hard towards C4, but lost time hesitating around the hill. I fell once more (and almost wanted to just lay there) and missed wide on a couple of controls. Then had a costly error on the penultimate control, when I did not read the map well and was too far right and had to stop when I climbed up to the overgrown field.

I did win the final split for M45.

Orienteering race 1:07:41 [4] 6.8 km (9:57 / km) +285m 8:14 / km

North American Long Championships near Cranbrook, BC - Course 7 (M45).

Oh well. This could have been another very nice run. I had an excellent first control (I was actually in 2nd place!), thanks to good compatibility with the map. Unfortunately, I punched just before Carl Childs, so even though I had taken a decent rough bearing to C2, I couldn't help but notice that he was heading quite a bit left of me. For a moment, I thought he had been correct, when I saw a flag, but alas, it was not ours and the correction cost a good 40 seconds. C3 looked like a good leg for me, despite the uphill, as the navigation seemed to allow good running speed. I opened up a big lead on Carl, but misread the line of trees, got to a control that wasn't mine, and foolishly continued on, not stopping until I was 250m past the control. Over 4 minutes of error there.

I settled down somewhat, and though I was a bit weak on the hills, it didn't really hurt me until C9, where I lost some time in execution and some time being too slow on the hills. The next big error came at C11. I started left to avoid some climb, and tried to angle back around. I thought I had things lined up, and the pace count had me coming into a cliff, and I saw a control, but it was not mine. I had to climb a hill to relocate, and I was 180m left of my control. The recovery wasn't clean as I tried to be smart about avoiding climb, but when past the control.

I did come within 1 second of winning the final split, but my legs were fried and I stumbled a bit in the last 30m.

Running 20:00 [3] 2.22 mi (9:01 / mi)

It was a long walk from the car to the arena - 2.5k, with the same walk back to the car. I jogged some on the way back. I also jogged to the start and back to see the boys off, then down to the porta-pits (several contours below the arena) and back and to my start, plus a little more.

This is just a total of the jogging.
10 AM

Orienteering race 30:37 [5] 3.4 km (9:00 / km) +120m 7:39 / km

North American Middle Championships near Cranbrook, BC - "Course 7" (M45).

Finally, a decent run! Beautiful woods to run thru, with some open areas. A very nice Middle course. I kept waiting for the big mistake, but it never came. I had a few smaller errors, but nothing too bad. The worst was probably the bad line I took (too far left) to the GO control. Probably cost me 25 seconds.

My compass picked up a new bubble at this altitude, so I didn't really trust it. That cost me some time in places, but overall it may have helped, because I had to read the map more carefully, so I saw some contour-based route options that I would normally have ignored in my rush to go straight.

The boys ran well, especially Luke who claimed the North American Championship against some solid M10 competition, and Zach was 3rd in a very competitive M14 class, with a couple of small errors.

Orienteering race 42:09 [4] 4.5 km (9:22 / km)

THOMASS race at Kimberly Nordic Center - North American Champs Prelude.

Tough to decide how hard to run this, given three more days of racing. Distance is a guess for now, based on running harder during the THOMASS section than during the Sprint. A couple of poor choices in the box, then the "Sprint" turned out to be misnamed and the climb was brutal. Walked most of the steep hills, thinking that climb would do the most damage to my legs.

Fun event! Especially with such a huge mass start. And as always, the organizers way underestimated the capabilities of the younger kids. The top finishers were 3 M12 triplets from Norway in 19:18, 19:19, 19:27 - like Luke, they only had to do 4 of the 16 THOMASS controls. Their F14 sister was 4th in 22:01, followed by Emma Waddington in 22:41 and Luke in 22:48. The top Elite was 33:09

Running warm up/down 10:00 [2] 1.0 mi (10:00 / mi)

Some uphill w/up on the way to the start, etc.

Note
(rest day)

Thought about doing a short run, then decided a short soak would be better for my legs going into the weekend!

12 PM

Hiking 25:00 [1] 2.5 mi (10:00 / mi)

Hiked with Chris up Tubbs Hill in Coeur D'Alene, ID. We hiked to the summit and checked out the Point. We were out for 95 minutes, probably moving over 75 minutes.
4 PM

Orienteering 1:12:48 [3] 8.62 mi (8:27 / mi)
slept:5.0

Ran from our hotel in Post Falls, ID, west on the Centennial trail to within 1 mile of Washington and back. Like so. Several bikers were out, plus hitchhiker who was on his way back to Spokane from Virginia and was done with hitching and was just hiking the balance. Also a woman pushing a very young child in a jogging stroller, while walking the dog and talking on the cell phone.

Quite warm out there, but I had to outdo last Tuesday.

Note

Eventually I may post my poor performances from the US Champs this weekend (perhaps right after the results are posted???), but for now I just want to whine about the meet. I don't know where to start, but I know where to end: the misplacement of a WHITE sprint control at the US Championships is inexcusable, I look at the amount of money we spent for this trip, the vacation time used up, and the Sporting Withdrawal that Zach and Luke were required to take, and I cry.

I won't even mention the long list of items that made this the most unpleasant A-Meet that I have attended.
