Orienteering race 2:20:31 [4] 8.91 mi (15:46 / mi) +494m 13:27 / mi

My first Billygoat and a pretty disappointing affair. A number of really stupid things:

1. Somehow I thought the left route choice was the better one, but I did about 40 meters of extra climb for no reason. 20 minutes to just the first control. So unnecessarily tired and no group of people around me that can help with pace. I felt that I didn't ever really recover after this first mistake.
3. Fine to just north of circle, but took me some time to figure out that I needed to go further south.
5. Keeping up with the great decisions, and taking the north fork when the south one was clearly better.
6. I went right by the control, not seeing it and could not figure out why I did not see it. Kept going for a little while before turning around.
12. I skipped 11 like a lot of other people. 18 would have been better. For some reason, I was very slow to 12. I think it was mostly trying to make sense of my surroundings, when I should just have kept running.
16. Went to the cliff to the west of the right one and down a couple of contours.

Not happy with my performance. Shows that I still have a long way to go getting better at running, but the main lesson learned from this race is to be more conservative and careful with the route choices.

Running warm up/down 3:43 [3] 0.43 mi (8:39 / mi)

I was rushed today, so a super quick warm-up.

Orienteering race 20:05 [4] 2.56 mi (7:51 / mi) +3m 7:49 / mi

I felt pretty ok today, being able to keep a good pace. Since it was a park-o, the orienteering was not that challenging though. It was mostly a trail race where you had to focus on never stopping/slowing and quick punching.

I have never been at this park though, so that was a lot of fun. Thanks to Ed, Sara Mae and Larry for putting on the meet.

Cycling 20:00 [3] 5.3 mi (3:46 / mi)

Tired, so easier biking than usual.

Strength 15:00 [3]

Abdominal machine - 140 lbs, plank, assisted pull-ups - 80 lbs, assisted dips - 90 lbs, pec fly - 135 lbs, back fly - 105 lbs

Realizing that I am particulary weak when it comes to pull-ups. Need to add in extra training for it.

Running long 1:20:37 [4] 9.8 mi (8:14 / mi) +181m 7:47 / mi

No problem with the heat today. Instead a steady and cold rain, making me cold until a couple of miles into the run.

Pretty happy with how I recovered from yesterday, but I wasn't able to get the really fast pace going. Felt pretty strong through-out, and I was able to finish strong.

They have installed one of those speed readers for cars along my route. Interestingly it also measures my speed as well and it seems to be doing it correctly. It shifted between 7 and 8 mph, which should be my correct speed.

Running warm up/down 2:12 [3] 0.22 mi (10:00 / mi) +4m 9:28 / mi

Quick warm-up before going out on blue.

Orienteering race 1:45:22 [4] 6.56 mi (16:04 / mi) +297m 14:05 / mi

Ali, Brendan and I went up to Nottingcook Forest to do some orienteering. The meet was organized by Bob Lux and UNO.

I first went out on the blue course. I did pretty well orienteering wise, but I was tiring at the end. Ali caught up with me to 12, and I was happy to be able to keep up with her for the next 6 controls. We were still orienteering on our own, with a mix of who found the control first.

1: Stopping too early. There were plenty of suttle hills before the right one that confused me, but I realized in the end that I need to continue until I can see the drop-off after the last hill.
3: Not doing any mistakes, but the uphill was too much and I walked most of it.
4: Started by trying to avoid the hill side, and ended up going the trail around.
17: Getting tired, I went the path around. Surprisingly, I got there faster than Ali going straight.
20: Too far down on the spur. I think the control was a little bit higher up than it should have been.

Pretty happy with the outing. It was a fun map and course.

It was also great to beat my nemisis JJ by 6 minutes.

Orienteering 20:40 [4] 1.88 mi (10:59 / mi) +24m 10:34 / mi

Ali wasn't sufficiently tired after the blue course, so she was heading out on the yellow one. Somehow, I thought that was a good idea as well and I went out 2 minutes before her, adding the extra motivation of trying to keep her from catching up to me for as long as possible.

Control 3 was in the incorrect location, but it was set really visibly so I could see it from the right spot. It is shown clear on the QR, with the control being hung at the turn around point on the track to the left.

Running warm up/down 5:48 [3] 0.64 mi (9:04 / mi) +1m 9:01 / mi

Warming up before race including drills.

Orienteering race 18:46 [5] 2.31 mi (8:07 / mi) +1m 8:07 / mi

First CSU Park-O of the season at Danehy. I had expected a little bit more trickery, but the course was pretty straight-forward. I had mostly a clean run, except I went around on the path to 4 due to people at the soccer field at the track. Other people were able to get through there. I also saw a better route choice to 9 by going out to the street, but I thought that was out of bound.

Impressed with how speedy Giacomo and Ian F are.

Great attendance, with more than 30 people attending. It was great seeing so many regulars on a weekday for a change.

Running warm up/down 8:14 [3] 0.82 mi (10:02 / mi) +2m 9:58 / mi

Jogging around the park with BP as a cool-down.

Strides

Running 22:54 [5] 3.55 mi (6:27 / mi) +2m 6:26 / mi

CSU intervals at the Harvard track. Tired after the weekend plus a pretty fierce headwind made it slow. The long 10k/5k program:

800m: (1:44.6, 1:42.4): 3:27.0 (6:56 min/mile)
800m: (1:40.3, 1:42.9): 3:23.2 (6:49 min/mile)
400m: 1:37.9 (6:34 min/mile)
400m: 1:38.7 (6:37 min/mile)
400m: 1:37.2 (6:31 min/mile)
400m: 1:36.6 (6:29 min/mile)
400m: 1:33.8 (6:17 min/mile)
400m: 1:38.5 (6:36 min/mile)
400m: 1:37.8 (6:33 min/mile)
400m: 1:34.3 (6:19 min/mile)
400m: 1:38.8 (6:38 min/mile)
400m: 1:31.1 (6:07 min/mile)

Stephen was there visiting, but still too broken to run intervals. No other orienteer there.

Running 20:00 [3] 1.3 km (15:23 / km)

Rest between intervals.

Running 10:00 [3]

Drills before the strides.

Running 36:18 [3] 4.11 mi (8:50 / mi) +79m 8:20 / mi

Going for an easy run after the weekend. It was very hot though, but I need to get used to the warm weather with the summer approaching, it made it much tougher than it should have been though. It was a toasty 89 degrees.

10 AM

Running warm up/down 20:00 [3] 1.5 mi (13:20 / mi)

Warm-up before the middle, trying to get the stiff muscles to move.

Orienteering race 49:59 [4] 4.9 mi (10:12 / mi)

I had a good race today. Trying to go a little bit slower, not making any mistakes, and that paid off. No real mistakes apart some small things at 8 and 9.

8: Used the left flat rock and came to the west of cliff/boulders so I had to round it to the control.
9: I wanted to get to the path, but I never hit it so I did something in the middle. I also stepped into a hole, falling pretty hard. I think the foot is ok though.

Apart from that, it was a clean race and I placed much better today at 22 out of 29.

11 PM

Running warm up/down 10:00 [3] 0.5 mi (20:00 / mi)

Easy warm up before the long.

Orienteering race 2:23:50 [4] 14.4 km (9:59 / km) +120m 9:35 / km

I did some stupid mistakes on the course today, probably 15-20 minutes worth of it:

5: Went too far down the river bank. I didn't see the contour right next to the river, so trying to force my way through some really tough undergrowth.
7: The biggest mistake. Trying to go east, around the hill, but I didn't have a good attackpoint. I was probably 20-30 meters away from the control, when I thought I was too far east, when I was too far wast. Moving to the west getting further away from the control and more lost. After loosing minutes, I decided to head towards the path to relocate since there were no other distinct features. After that, I easily found it.
8: Bad route choice. I went for the small path. Should have headed down for the river.
16: I took bearing from the clearing, and went too far north-east. I went direectly out to the river to relocate, and was able to back track.

I felt pretty good running wise though. It was hot (upper 70's), and naturally made me slower, but I think I held up pretty well and I recovered pretty well afterwards. It feels like I have significantly improved compared with last spring.

I finished 28 out of 30.

1 PM

Running warm up/down 20:00 [3] 1.5 mi (13:20 / mi)

Warming up before the sprint. Apart from running, doing some drills.

Orienteering race 22:35 [5] 3.1 km (7:17 / km)

I did a pretty good run. I think I might have lost at most 30-45 seconds, and that on the long legs (15 and 19).

The field was very tough today though and I was clearly the slowest short-distance runner. You can easily see that on how I lost more towards the end compared with the beginning. I placed 24 out of 25.

Running warm up/down 4:50 [3] 0.37 mi (13:04 / mi)

Some warming up before going out on the green.

Orienteering race 50:00 [4] 3.79 mi (13:12 / mi) +215m 11:13 / mi

A very hilly course by Dean. I did pretty well today, and was able to keep up the speed for most of the course until I hit the big hill to 13 and that totally killed me. I felt bad first that I was 10 minutes behind Ian, but I think the hilly long run a couple of days ago made me tire sooner, especially for the uphills. I think I should be able to be closer to his time being more rested. Maybe 46-47 minutes would have been possible.

Technically things went well. I am familiar with the park, and that obviously helped but I did a good job today of entering/exiting the controls. Only two mistakes today:

9: I did not notice the earth bank on the map, and I had to climb down it. It was more extensive than the map shows, so I had not choice but carefully climbing down it.
12: Drifting too far east. Mistakingly thought the stonewall was the one to the west, but quickly realized where I was after seeing the houses.

Orienteering race 17:05 [4] 1.75 mi (9:46 / mi) +75m 8:37 / mi

After some rest, I went out on the yellow course for running with some speed. I was tired from the Green course though so I was relatively slow. I even walked a bit to 7 because of the steep uphill.

Running 1:10 [3] 0.12 mi (9:44 / mi) +1m 9:29 / mi

Some strides

Running intervals 40:00 [5] 5.8 km (6:54 / km)

Attending my first CSU outdoor interval. I did something in between the long and short program:

1200m: (1:32.3, 1:39.8, 1:39.4): 4:51.5 (6:31 min/mile)
1000m: (48.0, 1:40.8, 1:42.0): 4:10.8 (6:44 min/mile)
800m: (1:32.2, 1:41.3): 3:13.5 (6:29 min/mile)
600m: (44.5,49.7,51.1): 2:25.3 (6:30 min/mile)
600m: (44.0,48.3,51.1): 2:23.4 (6:25 min/mile)
600m: (44.0,48.9,49.1): 2:22.0 (6:21 min/mile)

Not that fast today.

There was a ton of people at the track. Apart from the CSU gang, there was also two other large groups. Some really fast runners in those groups.

Giacomo was the only other person from the orienteering section. Ian was missing in action, though both Giacomo and I are trying to make him join the fun.

Orienteering race 48:20 [4] 4.6 mi (10:30 / mi) +51m 10:09 / mi

I went up to UNO's event at Mine Falls, Nashua. It was not labelled as such, but this was park orienteering, not challenging technical orienteering but the challenge was fast thinking, reading ahead and good flow. I need to practice this so it was a good outing.

I did some minor things:

1: Going through the boulder field was slow. I should have gone further north east, trying to minimize the amount of boulders to cross.
3: I went in too high.
5: I stopped too early. There was more green than on the map, and I misread the clue sheet, think the control was going to be on the north side instead of the south side of the thicket.
12: The lake was somewhat grown in. It seems like it was possible to cross it, but I did go around.
