Orienteering 1:17:42 [3] 4.06 mi (19:08 / mi)
shoes: Salomon Speedcross 3

Batsto Green. Going to really analyze this, and it will be boring for everyone but me. But rather than just saying "I suck" or "I got confused" I think it's important to see what I was actually doing.

I went into this with not much exercise during the week leading up, and so I felt that I needed to "get exercise." I also went in with low confidence in myself - and it really showed.. This was a place where taking a good bearing, pace counting, and walking quickly was totally the way to go - but it was so runnable! So of course, that's what I wanted to do. Subtle features mean slow down! Lots of features also means slow down! So I guess that's the lesson I need to take, among others. When to and when to not use trails, another. Sadly I didn't learn from my mistakes during the course.

1- Thought I was being clever using the trail and popping in after the funky bumpy features I could see from trail, but I didn't go quickly enough to maximize the decision, AND I didn't get into the terrain to start getting my head into the map. Straight line should always be a better choice unless the terrain looks really nasty. This was a fear-based decision - like, ooh, lots of weird brown contour-y things I don't understand right off the bat, let me just skip them - when I should have gone through them just to see what they hell they were and been confident in my bearing and my ability to be in it.

2 - Got sucked into using trail when I had this tug just to go straight but ignored my intuition over being cautious - good lesson - trails not always a good thing. Then at trail junction I somehow got confused and discombobulated, went too far and had to turn around. Duh.

3- Ok, just reeling a bit from all the confusion and needed to slow it way down.

4 - Saw Olga at the beginning and she had come in from her run, told me she had problems with 4 and her compass acting funny. So I really slowed down and paid attention to my bearing and pace count. And ended up doing well on this leg.

5 - Was on a good bearing, saw some other runners and it pulled my confidence away from what I was doing. They were on another course. If I had just kept on my bearing I would have been fine, but I even stopped pace counting. Thought I needed to relocate to trail, and in doing so turned in the direction of the control and saw it, just as I was giving up. I ran to it, asking the Lord for it to be my control. So that's how high my confidence was in myself ;)

6 - short control, pretty woods, fine.

7 - Kept on my bearing well with the idea to get to the crook of the trail as AP. Saw the crook to my right and just kept going on my bearing. Good one.

8- Short straight shot.

9 - Did no pre-planning on this and left the decision to the moment I punched 8; got pulled to use the trail to the right to avoid green slash which actually wasn't that bad. Kept changing my mind about how I wanted to get there - if I was going to get to the big trail I should have just run right to it right away, but it felt wrong going in the direction away from the control so I didn't end up doing either thing well - trail or through terrain - and even ended up getting confused a lot as to what little or big trail I was on. Funky brain fail here.

10 - Lost my pace count here in Nothingsville; lost my confidence even more. I just needed to keep going but instead had a haze of confusion descended upon me. Saw a guy and he was really lost and we stopped and chatted - he thought he was somewhere really far off - but he was on the trail that was near my control. I think I may have shouted "Hallelujah."

11- Determined not to be lured by trails - success! Straight shot.

12 - Should have used trail! Hah. Fail.

13, 14, Finish - No brain needed, just running.

Really interesting and different woods. A good workout and nice to see Julie at the finish. Lots of people asking for Pops.
