Orienteering race 1:47:00 [4] 7.8 km (13:43 / km) +300m 11:30 / km

British Champs M55L - Thrunton & Callally. Brutal! Stumbling around the whole course due to the height of the bilberry & heather ground cover.

Orienteering race 50:00 [4]

Bishop Woods - Macmillan Relay - 3 loops. Going well around first two loops with one small miss. Then slipped over on 3rd loop, then misread a form line contour as a ride and "explored" the wrong re-entrant in the low-vis green. Rainy evening so struggling seeing the map.

Kirkby Moor - warm day. Set out towards Shooting House Hill and managed to keep max hr < 160. Along Gunson Height feeling comfortable and enjoying t-shirt and shorts and the views and skylarks. Around wind farm and took off t-shirt as getting really warm and hr up to 165 on the climb. Steady up Out Park, still working at the top where i managed to hit 170 hr. Last small climb pushed hr back to 168.

Orienteering race 44:44 [4] 4.3 km (10:24 / km) +225m 8:15 / km

Scottish Relay Champs - First leg - it rained soon after the start - couldn't see the map, couldn't see where to put my feet, couldn't see where to punch with the dibber. Hard work.

Orienteering race 1:31:45 [2] 8.2 km (11:11 / km) +170m 10:08 / km

Scottish Champs - sooooooo tired before I started - so little sleep Friday night. Travelled up with Derek Fryer. No energy on warm day - in trouble from early on. Watched Roger Coombs, Bob Daly & Martin Dean all fly past me at different parts around the course.

Orienteering 53:45 [4]

Warrior BattleAxe #3 - Baysbrown Woods.
Had been coaching Langdale Primary at High Close YHA early afternoon - very warm spring day.
Didn't see optimum route but happy enough to trundle around the 17 I attempted. Was running with Sarah Atkinson & Julian Lailey at various points but lots of different routes & control sequences.

Parked in Ambleside - Hayes Garden Centre - ran across to Loughrigg, up and down several bumps with old gits. Then headed around Rydal Water to Rothay Manor and back along stony bridle path back into Ambleside. Very warm - dehydrated and tired - the rest have been getting stronger whilst I have been away these last few weeks!

Such a beautiful evening I couldn't resist going for a jog over Birkrigg & around Sea Wood after helping with schools event at Bowkerstead. Wood full of wild garlic, Skylarks in abundance, and managed to get the legs to wake up after the first 10mins.

Orienteering 56:29 [4]

Boo Tarn - Walna Scar road. BattleAxe #2. Tale of two halves - started in the runnable flattish area and was moving happily through the area when I missed one (parallel error on stream junctions and bends). Then started the climb up onto the flanks of Old Man - steep, rocky, five star navigation. One huge boulder Martin had put the kite on top. Fortunately I saw it and climbed carefully up and down, but Lecky ran around the sides and then ran off :-).
Managed to visit 16 in the time.

Run 1:14:00 [4]
shoes: Salomon Fellcross

Bigland / Haverthwaite Heights loop from old road. Heavy showers through climb up Bigland and along top to observation tower. Real quagmire where belted galloways have ploughed up the ground - lots of puddles - slippery rock and difficult to see out of glasses - perfect :-(.
Felt ok on Bigland climb but sluggish over tops. Only really stopped raining hard around the small tarn and dropping into Backbarrow. Very slow slippery climb up Hav Heights, but descent still clear of brambles after my gardening last winter.
Once I'd finished the sun came out and dry roads driving back to Ulverston!

Run 58:30 [4]
shoes: Salomon Fellcross

Kirkby Moor - standard loop starting with Out Park, across to Windmills, around back of Gunson Height and finish with Shooting House Hill. Windy overcast day and out in winter gear, but felt surprisingly strong. Given time includes a pee stop happy with that. Hope thigh injury doesn't react too badly - felt okish immediately after.

6 x 2 mins efforts with 2 min jog recovery. Start at top of canal, 4th effort started on bridge over canal at Glaxo end, last near Outcast and jog recovery finished at the end of Ropewalk. Stride felt okish although sluggish for last couple.

Orienteering 1:15:00 [2]

Early afternoon in torrential rain with Langdale Primary at Cylinders Wood. Then walk around High Close YHA scoping out next week. Then turned up early for BattleAxe #1 at Esthwaite Intake - found Bilbo having given all of the maps to Malcolm & Liz, and put some kites out from memory.

I went out to help put some more controls out, then had a plod around most of the others. Continued to rain throughout the afternoon, so cold and wet and slow. Even managed a parallel error :-).

Run 47:00 [3]
shoes: Inov8 Mudclaw 300

Nearly all day in Rothay Park with Ambleside Primary & associated others for schools event. Decided to stop on the drive home on side of Blawith Common south of Coniston.

Trundled up path to Beacon Tarn, looped around far side and back around to climb Blawith Knott. Reached top in 32mins. More direct descent back to car in 15mins. Managed to jog all the way to the top - cloudy evening. Pleased with the effort.

Orienteering race 1:22:24 [5] 6.1 km (13:30 / km) +260m 11:08 / km

Northern Champs - Blake Holme & Gummers Howe.
Drizzly rain, and feeling groin from yesterday. Steady through first couple and then missed in circle at #3. Ran a loop to relocate (lots of pale yellow in pale green which I couldn't really see) which cost 4 mins-ish. Simon Filmore caught me 2 mins and was ahead out of #3 and passed him on way to #4. He let me go thinking I was off line, but I spiked #4,#5,#6. Did a bit of a banana out onto open area and slight miss about #7, but only 30secs lost.
Then through wall and into runnable forest section. Spiked #8 through #13 but getting very tired. Hesitant on long leg towards #14 (distracted by girl asking where she was) lost touch with map. Slowed, wandered a bit and climbed too high - relocated just as Keith Tonkin passing below (started 8 mins after me), and led him into the kite. Maybe another 4 mins lost. Followed Keith through #15 & #16 below Gummers Howe, and then he dropped to low to #17 and I spiked it to beat him through last couple and into the finish.

Very tired, groin still sore, and visibility a constant problem in the drizzle. As well as can be expected given the conditions.

Orienteering race 49:34 [5] 4.4 km (11:16 / km) +240m 8:51 / km

Middle race - Summer House Knott. Nice day - overcast but not too cold. Started a minute behind Rick Browne and didn't see him until I was hesitant on the way to #4, which he spied while I was checking the map. With him for much of the race, and picked up Graham Capper around #7 and he was with us as well. Managed some slightly different routes which kept me with them even though they were running stronger.

Sooooooo enjoyed this, with just two 30secs errors at #4 and overshooting #6, and misreading control description numbers at #16 cost 15secs.

Excellent to have a 1:7500 map :¬).

George H-C had a good run to pip me by 3secs!
