Banner Down bridleway, Northend across to Upper Northend Farm, "north face" ascent of Stony Lane on jelly legs to Holts Down, across top of Ramscombe Bottom to Chameydown Farm. Descend & reclimb Banner Down back to Grev's.
Some of the vegetation was fierce on the descent from Charmy, had to walk a 400m+ section dodging nettle beds & then avoid ponies. Further green lane descent into North End also a shuffle due to head high overgrown vegetation.

Much faffing away from Oak Head to find the correct lines/stiles. Through Thompson Wood ok & again faffing above Field End climbing Knotts Hill. Eventually found the gates across to Reddings Allotment & around back of tarn.
Very tired at the end.

6 PM

Orienteering 1:00:00 [3]

Out with Laura Brown on High Dam, revisiting the lines from #2 to #7.

Not only trying to show good lines but even with my slow speed showing that you don't have to run full gas to have good leg times.

Control Number / Original Split / Original Position / New Split / Equivalent Position
3 / 13:49 / 40th / 7:31 / 10th
4 / 22:12 / 43rd / 6:12 / 24th
5 / 3:56 / 18th / 3:31 / 11th
6 / 6:23 / 35th / 3:29 / 4th
7 / 6:38 / 30th / 3:37 / 7th

Net gain of about 28mins.

Also interesting to see the elephant tracks through the terrain.

First long walk in a while. Parked at Torver & went up White Maiden to start. Then on ridge to Brown Pike & Dow Crag. Drop to Goats Hause and then over Old Man. Managed to shuffle all the way off & back down into Torver in about 50mins.
Left glute/hip sore on the first climb. Found I had a blister on right heel once I'd finished.
4 PM

Note

After getting out of the shower promptly fell asleep in the chair for an hour . . .

Run 1:02:10 [3] 4.62 mi (13:27 / mi) +123m 12:26 / mi
shoes: Hoka Challenger ATR4

Dalton O loop. Green lane out from Dalton hugely overgrown with head high nettles - walk through out & back - legs, thighs and arms all super tingly. Rest of loop not so bad but extremely dry underfoot.

Left hip felt sore throughout - more strength exercises needed :o(.

First time on the bike in a few months. Steady into the wind over Birkrigg & down into Scales. Managed to get over Dendron hill seated. First time I have been around the loop in a while as all of the hedges around Dalton had been layered so you could see the fields!

Scottish Champs - Craig A Barnes.
Wanted to do this in case of another lockdown, but not feeling very bright before the start.
First loop through the moor clean but slow. Steady into the woods & spiked #6. Bashed through the fight, track run & climb the hill to #7. Came out well south of the control, and thought it was my error. However control been removed from course as being in the wrong place.

Climbed & skirted green on start of leg to #8, but never seemed to find good lines across the slope. At one point had to crawl on hands & knees for 15m! Turns out there were some trods higher up the slope. Eventually emerged bang on the crag to spike the control but very slow through the green.
#9 ok, #10 managed to stand on top of the crag without seeing the flag. Rest in the white block ok.
Long leg to #15 shows how slow I was "running". Caught by Ian Davidson here, but was awake enough to get better line to #16 (by 1 min) to beat him to finish.

Tough day out followed by 4hour drive back. Knackered.

Orienteering 1:00:00 [3]

2 loops on Eskdale moor with NWJS. Very warm & tiring.
3 PM

Note

3.5 hour drive from Eskdale Green to west of Stirling to find B&B.

Very warm afternnoon so feeling very drowsy & dehydrated.
Decided I would survive on Pot Noodle in the B&B rather than go out, and guts complained next morning.
Poor nights sleep.

Northern Champs - High Dam.
Warm day which turned into a suffer-fest with long courses.

Keith Tonkin at 2 mins behind so pushed on away from start. As I was heading to #2 saw him ahead of me running & looking around so realised he had missed #1. Long leg #3 across many OOB walls which I spiked & Keith punched just before me - caught 2 mins after 20mins running. He was away down the slope to # 4 & not seen again. #5 to #6 was uphill through LDNPA land - hard slog.
Missed #7 in the circle but only lost 30secs to 1min.
Spiked shorter leg to #8 but rushed exit direction & dropping down slope SE rather than NE meant I made the leg to #9 very difficult. Rather than edge of marsh & small hills to follow I was dropping underneath line of crags - much more difficult nav. Ended up "only" wasting 3 or 4 minutes.

Slog across & uphill to #10 where I took my gel at 45 mins. Across & uphill to #11 which also spiked. Now at far end of area & managed to be clean through remaining controls despite getting slower & slower.
Poorly placed control number at #21 meant I was navigating through the number!

Felt very faint when I had finished.
6.9km is 4.287 miles. GPS has 5.06 miles so pretty straight.

Ended up 16th so I'll take that when the focus of recent weeks has very much been on the earthworks with the builders in the garden. And all of the coaching has mainly been standing around and not doing it myself.

Orienteering race 1:00:14 [4] ***** 3.6 km (16:44 / km) +210m 12:57 / km
ahr:140 spiked:12/16c shoes: VJ Bold

BMC - Summer House Knott.

Been looking forward to this for some time.
Probably didn't go to the start kite (easier to go diagonally uphill) which meant angle to #1 was off. Fallen trees also pushed me too low & missed. Relocated from marsh & spur shape to only lose 1 min.
Hared off down hill to #2 which spiked. Saw Richard Oxlade (2min man) only 30secs behind as I exited control so pushed on across longer leg to #3 which spiked. Nearly dropped onto wrong spur to #4, but realised wild garlic on stream bed & corrected. Deliberately low across to #5 & then climbed ok.

Thought route to #6 looked ok so started planning long leg #7 to #8. However in coming back to leg #6 had drifted off line - cue parallell error & binning 5 ot 6 mins by the time I had relocated & found control.

Ok to #7 but Richard caught me on the way to #8 which we punched together.
I missed #9 & lost another minute & he was away.
Hesitant at #11 lost another 30secs or so.
Once through the gate then clean on loop from #12 to finish.

Ended up 19th which shows how everyone else was also very poor.

3.6km = 2.236 miles. GPS says I ran 2.87 miles.

Collecting in kites from Haverthwaite Heights. Parked on old road & ran out to far end. Surprisingly one of the most inaccessible had disappeared . . . wierd.

Newton Fell.

Temporary traffic lights outside Newby Bridge Hotel meant the journey took nearly an hour instead of 15mins.
Course was crap with plenty of briars, large nettles & bracken on a steep slope covered in blackthorn scrub. Fell going into #3 where my head was lower than my feet & scraped both forearms drawing blood.
After an hour walking around the steep slopes called it a day at #12 of #17.

Course meant to be only 4.7km with 300m, but I'd completed the distance & nearly the climb, with the loop I'd missed having another 100m!
