Orienteering race (Sydney Summer Series 1) 44:45 [4] 8.14 km (5:30 / km)
shoes: Mizuno Wave Rider 17 (blue)

Batten Creek
Set off a minute or so behind Paula and just in front of Undy. Undy seemed to try a direct, bush approach to 24 which didn't seem to pay off then surprised to see Paula coming into 23 from the opposite direction. Ran with her as far as 21, I was slower in the bush as wary looking through my glasses on rough stuff but faster on the road. After that we went out separate ways. Picked up the pace towards the end to finish on 510 with 15 secs to spare, good result but still beaten by Ali. Route 30,19, 24, 23, 15, 26, 28, 29, 20, 21, 18, 13, 10, 9, 8, 25, 16, 14, 17, 22, 12.

The map was an interesting 1:11,000 rather than the advertised 1:7,500 which made it tricky to read some of the detail. The reason given was "that's what happens when you copy from OCAD to PDF"!

Borhoney Ghurk Common - Course 3 (M45)
Anchor leg for BF's M45 "dream team", i.e. the only one, with Mike B off first then Simon. Just managed to avoid the mass start by 4 mins so by myself until 7 where either caught or was caught by an unknown kiwi woman. Reasonably in control until 12 where a made a 180 leaving the control losing 5 mins. A bit wobbly from 14 to 15 but otherwise okay. Thought we had finished 3rd as the 1st placed team had been DQed as another team had taken their map, something the final Eventor results didn't reflect so assume they must have been reinstated!

shoes: Inov8 x-talon 212 original (3)

Chapel Flat - Course 7 (M50)
A very average run just scraping into the top half of the field. Careful to 1 probably not taking the most direct route, took a track option to 3 where I should have been more aggressive. Lost 5 mins at 4 where I had a 50/50 choice when I hit the contour ditch, chose to go left and had to go up to the track to relocate. After hesitating at the start of the long leg seemed to execute it reasonably well. No too bad through the gold mining only to lose more time at 13 where I overshot to the next gully not seeing the control in the green. Hot.

Orienteering race (Australian Sprint Champs ) 13:08 [4] 2.66 km (4:56 / km)

St Patrick's College - Course 3 (M50)
Didn't start too well going to 11 before 1 like many people, probably lost about 10 secs; the line to 1 went through 11 (although it was cut) which seemed to be the reason for the confusion. That was enough of a wake up so pretty clean after that except for another 10 secs at 18. I'd already decided not to change direction after the map change despite the gap in the fence not being mapped. Shocked to finish 2nd to Greg by 58secs with 7 of us within 40 secs of each other.

Really felt for Paula who 'mispunched' the spectator control despite at least 2 people seeing her punch it. She tried to lodge a complaint which was rudely disallowed. She wasn't the only one with a dodgy mispunch and it cost her a victory by 30 secs :(
