run 1:22:32 [3] **** 10.0 km (8:15 / km) +59m 8:01 / km
shoes: Inov8 X-Talon 212 (#6 Fluro)

WMOC final - Hedley Dunes
GPS starts after about 6 minutes, en-route to #2

Slightly better run, but slow and solo. Big misses at #4, hit track at a clearing that wasn't on the map and #17 - think I missed seeing the control but was close on first pass.

Really enjoyed the forest.

Cruisy Woodhill MTB with cakewoman and liggo.

7/10 where Rotovegas is a solid 9/10.

Followed up with disc golf - took a while to get my drive grip right.

orienteering race 1:03:13 [4] ***** 7.42 km (8:31 / km) +180m 7:36 / km
shoes: Inov8 X-Talon 212 (#6 Fluro)

WMOC qualifier #2 11th

Started off OK, only small mistakes. Some pack running through middle part with Mats Walin and Tim Falck Weber.
Many small misses, bigger ones at:
#4 Got too high on spur
#10 Lost contact and struggled to fit map to ground (what is up/down problem)
#12 Got too low, should have gone in carefully from track
#14 Must have turned away from control and checked the other tiny gullies first
#15 Bounced off road

The steep bits of map are v hard to read.

WMOC long qual #1

Steady out of start to 1 and thought I'd taken safest route to #2, but ended up on a sand-dune :(

OK, but steady after that until I was caught by Ola Hultin. With both of us navigating we did OK, then I switched off and he got lost (doh !). I ended up going out to a track to relocate.

So lost 10 minutes on two dumb errors, but pretty happy with how I was running apart from them.

Small bit of tape on left ankle and right knee was fine. Maybe tape is triggering some small proprioceptive response saving my right knee from doing some work ?

orienteering 53:00 [2] 4.0 km (13:15 / km)
shoes: Inov8 X-Talon 212 (#6 Fluro)

WMOC practice area

Fine in the white, then had a peek at the scrubby stuff - way harder. Knee hurt again, must be some twisting I didn't do in sprint.
Takeaways:

Index contours used, ignore the false emphasis they give
Exercise extreme caution in the not-white areas
Don't go to the beach dude
Some tiny contour detail invisible - lidar artifact ?
Some form line depressions invisible
Take it easy on leg 1
If in doubt, look for steep slopes to save your arse
Compass works

orienteering race 19:51 [4] 3.4 km (5:50 / km) +40m 5:31 / km
shoes: ASICS GT 1000 #5

WMOC sprint final.
Tied with Martin.
Simple park o to start with, but I managed to skip a control in a line of 3 consecutive controls on trees. After that it was a bit more fun, nice planning, lot of direction changes, but area was nothing like yesterday's. Probably lost about 5x15s on the rest.

Bring on the bush.

orienteering race 21:59 [4] ***** 3.83 km (5:44 / km)
shoes: ASICS GT 1000 #5

WMOC qualifier Uni of Auckland
May have squeaked into A final undeservedly.

Maybe hardest sprint O I've done. No idea how I did some of the legs and those weren't the ones I messed up.

Stupid mistake 4-5, relaxing as I ran across a field and then emerging into campus in wrong place. Slow going to 8 as I lost and regained contact.

Major mistake at 11 - overran exit from stair-case, lost contact, a bit confused by Jemery running past and unmapped staircase in olive green... eventually relocated off 12. Almost returned to 12 while looking for 13.

13-14, 17-18, 20-21 all crossed the main campus and until I look at the gps in a minute I have no idea how I did them.
