Sprint Orienteering race 16:15 [5] *** 3.81 km (4:16 / km) +33m 4:05 / km
shoes: Salomon S Lab Speed 2

MSW #1 @ Overnewton College (WRE): 10th overall, 6th in M21E (+1:54 on Freddo, +1:25 on Tommy).
Quite a poor race for me, lost all focus after making an error and then struggling to lift legs at the end after picking up a lot of mud on my shoes. Detailed analysis:

#1-5: Smooth controlled start, happy with process and execution. In 3rd here (behind Freddo and Tommy).
#6: first route choice error and let it throw me. Went left as hadn't quite looked at the whole leg and got caught by the olive green (+2-3")
#7: more significant RC error - rushed out of control, not assessing properly and went right (+3-5").
#8: first big non-RC error. Didn't look up properly and was rushing, ended up running up edge of playing fields going 90 deg in wrong direction (+18-20")
#11: had been running angry since 8 and hadn't looked ahead to know I was about to flip map at 10. Got to 10, couldn't find next control, flipped map - but map was folded so no course - flipped back before figuring out I needed to unfold map.. Then stressed and didn't read properly, getting caught in trap of going left (+10-12").
#12: Rushing again and not reading properly, got to gap in olive and turned left instead or right before realising (+8-10").
#14: Ran inside canopy and then lost contact with what I was doing, went to turn left then realised I was supposed to be turning right (+2-3").
#15: another rushed RC due to error on #14 which I got wrong (+3-5").
#19: Foolishly tried to cut across at end of the leg and while I struggled through the mud - caking my shoes in it - Tommy sped around on the track and caught up to me (+5" but more importantly leading to shockingly slow running for the rest of the race).
#21: Another foolish RC - thought the short steep bank would lead to more mud on shoes so ran around the bottom of oval on "road". Turned out climbing bank not only led to shorter RC but the bottom of the oval road was another muddy shitshow (+15-20").
#21-Finish: No mistakes and RC looked good but running very very slow. Did not feel like I could lift my legs because of the mud. I took 2:11 on this section whereas Marty who was the fastest took 1:47... Most of the others who I should be as fast as or faster were around 2:00.

MSW #2 @ Deakin: 3rd overall, 2nd in M21E (+39" on Aston).

Aston started 1 min behind me so had a bit of pressure (he has been catching me a minute in a few races recently including a 14 min one at STB). After this morning aim was to not be shaken by a small mistake, read the whole leg before running myself into a trap/mistake and to use two hands when reading closely.

Successfully achieved these three goals except for 1 where I didn't quite read all the way to the circle and went right up the stairs, losing 10-12". Other than that only other significant time loss was 13-15" on 7 where I got confused with the canopy area with glass door which didn't look very passable to me (although I didn't have a good idea of where the control was located here so partially that as well). At this point I was 28" behind Aston (having lost 23-27") so I didn't really lose much time from here to the finish. Pretty happy with this one, good signs on a technical area.

Other time losses:
#10: tried to diagonal at end of leg but rails on steps stopped me. Should have stayed left until car park (+2")
#11: Went right but diagonal paved path on map was dirt on ground and not obvious so hesitated and had to climb steps plus 90deg turn. Think the others went left (+2")
#12: went right again as this was through route for me, think others went left which looks to have been marginally quicker (+5")
#16: took diagonal path which was longer to avoid steps I had taken to 8 (and thought were slow) but turns out steps weren't that bad (+2-3")
#19: was going to go left but then saw it was at top and changed my mind to go right - distance looks similar but had to 180 out of control and then another two 180's at top and bottom of staircase meant a much slower running route (+5")

Taper Sesh: 2km @ T (3'), 5*300(1')

Legs a little tired in warm up - I think due to getting back to work (standing up all day and the commute each way). But knew it was just going to be a short sesh so confident I could get through. Felt very comfortable under target pace for T (3:29-3:32) and then felt good in the reps, sitting in behind the other boys.

T Session on Bright Rail Trail: 15'(3') + 3*5'(1')
Was going to do 15, 10, 5 but was feeling quite rough on the first 5 so traded in for 3*5. Think it was due to doing the first 15' towards Myrtleford which was a gradual downhill and feeling fine at just sub 3:30 but then turning and trying to maintain 3:30. Been a solid week after a hard last weekend, happy to get through three priority sessions well. Funnily enough I'm keen to go back to work tomorrow - let's see how long that lasts.
