Orienteering race 37:50 [4] 4.0 mi (9:28 / mi)
shoes: Innov8 X-Talon 212 (2)

British Relays, Brown Clee.
M50 leg 2, 4.9km.
Great run by Dave put me out in the lead just ahead of TVOC. Ran well through the first 10 controls to extend the lead. Then it all went wrong. The block of forest where #11 was a complete mystery to me. It seemed way too far to the control and i therefore turned back too early. Ran around in circles for around 5 mins. I was then so disorientated leaving the control i headed 90 degrees to the red line adding another 2 mins to my losses.
Still managed to set Tim off a mere 1.5 mins down on Clive giving us hope. Unfortunately Tim had eyesight issues and struggled just as much as me. How we finished 3rd i will never know. ..

Orienteering race 1:05:00 [4] 6.0 mi (10:50 / mi)
shoes: Innov8 X-Talon 212 (2)

British Champs, Brown Clee.
M50L 8.9km 240m.
Quite happy with my performance. No big misses, just the odd hesitation in the circle on some of the more bingo controls. Needed Quentin and Clive to both mess up but they didn't. Comfortable 3rd place 2 mins behind Quentin and 30 seconds behind Clive.
Further analysis on inspecting the splits:
I was in the lead after the technical section at the start (#15). I then lost a minute to Quentin at #16. I did stand still in this block of forest as I was expecting some obvious ground features whereas there appeared to be nothing: the mapper must have imagined something. I then seem to have lost further time on the section through the unmapped forestry work/windblow. There definitely was some luck involved here in finding a good way through. Finally both Clive and I lost time on the penultimate control which was a particularly bad example of a bingo control. Taking nothing away from Quentin though: he seems to have just had the edge for the whole season.
