Orienteering race 1:06:59 [4] 7.0 mi (9:34 / mi)
shoes: Innov8 X-Talon

UKOL 2, Southern Champs, Sheepleas and Netley Heath. M50, 10.2km.
Small miss at #1 then clean. Caught Andy Thorpe 4min at #1 and then ended up racing against my best laid plans. Got away with it and able to run pretty strongly right to the end. Split Quentin and Clive so happy with that. Results:

Orienteering race 17:31 [3] 2.0 mi (8:45 / mi)
shoes: Innov8 X-Talon

UKOL 1 The Nower. 2.7km 85m. Forest sprint with19 controls.
Calf still feeling strange. Fine one minute, a bit sore the next. Decided to run but not at full race pace. Had Lulu 1 min ahead and Frostbite at 2 mins. Caught Louise at #5 and Neil at #13. Running fast enough that neither kept with me but slow enough to make navigating pretty straight forward. Pleased to finish with no calf issues. 1 min down on Quentin which is satisfactory. Road running 26:00 [3] 3.0 mi (8:40 / mi)
shoes: New Balance 1080

Test run up to Holme and back. Up over Brownhill dam, back over Digley dam. Calf OK, no sharp pains or soreness but plenty of strange twinges in all sorts of new places. Feeling a bit tight afterwards. Not really conclusive.

Walking 1:20:00 [1] 8.0 mi (10:00 / mi)

Calves still feeling battered. Walked home from Opticians appointment in Huddersfield. Actual walking time 2 hr 45. Very noticeable how the amount of snow increases the higher up the valley you get. Hoping this was a good way of easing my calves back into action.

Road bike 2:45:00 [2] 42.0 mi (3:56 / mi)

Correctly guessed that the main roads were dry enough not to have to worry about ice. Huddersfield, Ainley Top, Sowerby Bridge, Rippenden, Denshaw, Greenfield. Stayed warm despite sub-zero temp. Even my feet had some feeling at the end. Happy to say no punctures with the new tyres.

Note

Ouch! Calf massage with Richard. He started with the right one (which he didn't touch last time). He found this was tight on the outside edge but otherwise not too bad. Only 30 mins of (moderate) pain. Then he started on the left one. He had to go easy on the inside edge where I still have a scab from last time but this didn't stop him going at the outer part of the calf for another 50 mins. I thought I was getting away lightly at first but then he started with his elbow. Both calves will be sore for a few days. Just easy running over this time. Hoping that I'll be OK to run the Southerns at the weekend but probably not at full pace.
He advised that I should be doing eccentric calf strengthening exercises carrying extra weight but not concentric ones which only exacerbate my tight calves. This contradicts what Kim has told me so I may need to seek advice.
