Orienteering 1:57:00 [3] 7.79 km (15:01 / km) +225m 13:08 / km

This might have been a mistake. I probably should have run Brown...oh well.

It was a coldish day with some wind, but it felt much better once you were in the woods. I started out fine, getting around to #3 with no problems except that I had to run a bit out of the way to cross the creek on the road. It was a little too wide and cold and deep to try to wade across. Many other runners were doing the same thing.

I completely botched it going to #4. I got close but curved too much around a small hill and was looking at a ridge that was turned 90˚ from the one I wanted. I wandered a bit and then saw a cliff that clued me in to where I was. Then #5 wasn't much better. It took much longer to hit the trail than I had expected (I was also quickly running out of steam). Then I saw a very distinct knoll on the other side of the trail that I couldn't match up on the map. (Jordan later confirmed that it was not on the map.) And a small field that was also not on the map. So, not trusting at all that I knew where I was, I took a longer route down the big trail to a smaller trail, just to make sure.

From there, I thought it would be an easy route around the green and into the ditch, but the ditch was much lower down the reentrant than anticipated. There were several other folks up at the top looking, too.

Then on to #6. I should mention now that the woods at Prince William are 100% junkier than I've ever seen. Downed trees everywhere, often resembling pick-up sticks that you just had to thread your way through. And they weren't always depicted on the map, so it was a crapshoot as to whether or not you were picking a good route. I was often wrong.

And the route I chose to #6 was particularly bad. I stayed up on the ridge, thinking it would be better than the streambed, but it was not. Then #7 and 8 were fine, I was just completely out of gas. I guess doing a hilly Green course was probably not the best activity after two weeks of being sick.

Going from 8 to 9, I was ducking under a fallen tree and didn't see a branch sticking out. It stabbed me on the side of my nose and there was a lot of blood. I was just glad it wasn't any higher, near my eye. I think there's going to be some bruising and swelling. It should be beautiful.

And then I finished, happy just to not DNF.

Peloton 30:00 [3] 8.45 mi (3:33 / mi)

I am finally recovered enough to do some cycling. I still have a cough that was triggered while riding, but I'm feeling so much better. Two weeks was a long time to be sick.

I did an adventure ride today, this one through Grand Teton NP. It was pretty cool because I "rode" along the road that I actually cycled on when I was in the park. That was a fun trip.
