Orienteering race 1:36:22 [4]

Day 2. US Classic Champs. Green Y. Bear Brook State Park, NH.

A bit of a disaster. I psyched myself out from the beginning. Peggy was ~ 4 minutes ahead of me and Barb was less than a minute in the overall results, so of course I started out very stupidly. I was running down the trail to #1 and I already was unsure of where I was on the trail!! Not even a minute into the race!! That alone should have taught me something, but it did not.

I found #1 okay after I saw the little trail off the big trail and knew where I was. But #2 was my downfall. Just like so many others, I could not make heads or tails of those yellow strips. I thought I was following them just fine, but when I got to the spot where my control should have been, it was not there. And then...where the hell am I?? Wondered around a lot, trying to match things up. I finally hit a yellow strip right at 2 boulders, forced myself to stop, line things up and find the spot on the map that looked like that. I knew I couldn't be too far away as I had just been wandering in concentric circles. I thought I found the spot, headed to where my control should have been, and there it was...looking nothing like I had pictured.

#3 was fine, started out on a 180 to #4 but caught myself fairly quickly, and then found it fine. Off a bit on #5, looked at #6 and thought, "oh shit." But...I went slow enough and thumbed along to everything and hit it dead on. #7 was great, a bit to the right on #8. Then I saw we were going back into the yellow strips to get to #9, and I was a little scared. But, for some reason, they made sense to me now. I think the elephant tracks down the middle of them helped, too.

I saw #9 from a ways away, got excited and started running to it when...WHAM...I stepped in an animal hole, went straight down, bending my knee way beyond what it's capable of doing. Immediate shooting, very painful pain occurred, along with some not so nice words. I felt bad about that because there was a very nice looking lady standing there (might have been Canadian as I didn't recognize her), and she asked if I was okay. I said I would be fine in a few minutes, and she said, "Well, maybe a few more curse words will help." Sorry!!

Ran out to the road from 9, thought briefly about taking the road to #10, but realized I wouldn't be moving much faster on the road than I had been through the woods, so stayed on a straight line to 10. Luckily, I passed another control between 2 very distinct boulders and used that as a semi-attackpoint. #11 was good, it just seemed to take forever to get there. Was a little stronger bashing out to the road to #12, remembering what it cost me yesterday, and in to the finish. Was able to hold onto third place only because others had more problems than I did.

Overall, a very enjoyable weekend. It was fun to travel with Peggy...we seem to agree on everything, which is nice. It was great to see old friends and have very nice conversations with them. Beautiful weather, challenging courses...yes, a very nice weekend.

Orienteering race 1:11:05 [4]

Day 1, US Classic Champs. Green Y. Bear Brook State Park, NH

I really didn't know what to expect from this weekend. My knees felt fine, so no worries there, but I hadn't been doing any orienteering training, really, so who knew. At the very least, I had my standard minimal goal which is don't get so lost that you start crying.

On my way to 1, I did a quick scan of the course and saw that it didn't go through any horrendous areas, so that was good. And I found #1 and 2 just fine. I got off a little to the right on #3 and had to backtrack a bit, but not too bad. #4 was good and #5 was perfect...I had the fastest split in my class, and I moved into first place! I stayed in first for 4 controls, until #9, where I did not make sure I knew where I was when I crossed the trail and ended up too far right. I knew exactly where I hit the edge of the hill (near where it narrows where the stream enters), but still off by ~100m.

And then the real fun began. On my way to 10, I saw Mary Jones. I know I shouldn't have paid attention, but I did because I thought Mary had started after me...and after Peggy, from a conversation we had had in the assembly arena. So, I started panicking a bit. I thought I had been having a really good race, but here was Mary, which meant Peggy had also passed me! Shit! And...I was floundering around, looking for #10. Not good! I saw Mary heading away from where she should have been going to get to #11, so I figured she hadn't found 10 yet, I looked at my map, figured out where I was with that new information, and headed down and got 10. Then I started running like a headless chicken.

I missed a bit on 11...Mary was there first. #12 was a disaster...I neglected to see the 4.5m description for the root stock and kept checking the smaller ones, like a crazy person. #13 was fine, but I dropped from second to third on my way to #14. It was just a matter of bashing out to the road and getting the last control, but I kept falling, and getting into really thick stuff, and scrambling over rocks. It felt like it took forever to get out to the road.

Ran into the finish chute, looking for Mary, convinced she had passed me at 12 since she was having such a great run...except that she had been walking, so that made no sense. And, of course, it made no sense because I was totally wrong. It was Heidi Onkst that we had been talking to, not Mary. And if I had remembered that correctly, I might not have been so panicky at the end of my course and might have stayed in second. Argh!!! I need to NOT WORRY ABOUT ANYONE ELSE OUT THERE!!!

Dog Walking 20:00 [1]

Hiking 1:24:00 intensity: (42:00 @2) + (42:00 @3)

My muscles were still ridiculously sore from barre class on Monday, but I still felt that I needed to get out today. So, I headed to a new-to-me park -- Green Mountain -- for a hike. It went pretty steeply up right from the start, and then evened out a bit further up. Decent 360˚ views from the top -- downtown Denver, Golden, the Front Range. It would have been better, but there was a pretty heavy haze today.

I am constantly amazed at how many people are out and about in the middle of the day. People of all ages.
