Note

Even though I was the meet director, I had every intention of running a course at yesterday's RMOC event at Round Mt. Mother Nature had other plans, though. As we were setting up the registration area, we heard what sounded like a "freight train" or jet plane coming through the trees. Doug Berling was even wondering why it was flying so low. Then we saw it coming out of the trees and into the open area...this fairly large dust devil heading right towards us. So, of course, we just stood there and watched it until it was right on top of us. There ensued a fair amount of scrambling to hold things down, mainly the two tent canopies, and assorted registration items because everything was flying. I was bending down to pick up the start cards when a clipboard came flying through the air and whacked me on the head. Pretty quickly I realized that I was bleeding, and that there was a fair amount of blood, so I sat down and told Brooke to take a picture.

When Troy finally realized what had happened, he sprang into action, got his first aide kit, and cleaned it all up. There was a fairly large bump for awhile and I felt woozy off and on, so decided not to go out on a course after all. But, I feel fine this morning and I have maps of the Red and Green, so I'll just go back another day and try again.

Hiking 1:00:00 intensity: (30:00 @2) + (30:00 @3)

RMOC is thinking about mapping parts of Golden Gate Canyon State Park . But, the parts I saw didn't look very inviting for orienteering. The views, though, were gorgeous.

Note

My faith in humanity was reaffirmed today. On the way to hiking, I stopped for gas and left my wallet on top of my car as I drove away. In the wallet was my reimbursement from the meet yesterday...$112 plus my credit cards and license. I didn't realize it was gone until I got to the trailhead. I momentarily thought about just going back to look for it, but realized that either someone had turned it in to the gas station or it was gone-gone. I had driven a ways to get to the trailhead and didn't want to waste the time, so I went for my hike, obsessing over the wallet the whole time. :-(

Afterwards, I went back to the gas station and no one had turned it in. I walked up and down the busy street, behind stores, through parking lots... looking in trash cans and bushes thinking someone might have just taken the cash and tossed the rest. But...nothing. As I drove home, dejected, I realized that I would need to get my corporate credit card overnighted because I'm traveling on Tuesday. And cancel the others. And when would I get a replacement license? So much to do because of one lost wallet.

My last shred of hope was that someone had found it and left me a voicemail at home. Then I remembered that my address on my license was for the apartment that I leased for a few months here before I bought my house. So, there's no way anyone would find me to return the wallet. <>

But...when I got home there was, indeed, a message from a woman who lived just down the street from the gas station...she had found my wallet!! I was so excited that I didn't ask how she found me, and just hopped back in my car and sped to her house. Well, it turns out that she (1) called Starbucks because she saw my card, but they couldn't give her any info, (2) called the police, but I hadn't filed a report yet, and then (3) Googled my name and found the White Pages entry. Even though the address was different, she figured "How many Kris Beecroft's could be in Denver?" Indeed!

I thanked her profusely, offered a cash reward -- which she adamantly declined -- and tearfully told her that, on this Father's Day, her Dad would be so proud of her. To which she replied, "He is."
