Orienteering 1:00:00 [3]

Hanging the close-in controls and putting out water. I saved too much for today...lesson learned. It was a good day, though. Lots of helpers and no complaints about the courses, other than a few comments that they were a little too easy. Hard not to be easy, though, in this park.

I'm glad the event is over only because I stress so much that people won't like the courses. Otherwise, I enjoy setting courses. It gives me a lot of time out in the terrain.

Orienteering 2:00:00 [2]

Hanging most of the controls for tomorrow's meet. I'll hang the close-in ones in the morning. It was a very exciting day.

In my first foray, I ran into a herd of deer. They were standing very close to where I wanted to set my control, and they moved away as I came closer. Unfortunately, they moved to the area where I wanted to set my *next* control, so I had to shoo them away again. This continued for 5(!) controls. After the first 3, I started apologizing to the deer for bothering them so much.

Then, I moved into a Northern Goshawk's territory, who proceeded to keep circling above me, screeching away. I guess I must have been close to its nest. So, I quickly set my controls and moved on.

The most exciting part, though, was when the Park Ranger sought me out in the fields of Cherry Creek park because he had had "several" reports about someone setting out "devices" all over the park. As he approached me, he talked into the walkie-talkie on his shoulder, saying "I've made contact. I've made contact." He then asked me what I was doing, and I explained, and then everything was fine. I guess everyone is a little nervous these days.

Note

The weather forecast in Long Beach, CA, this morning amuses me:

"It's going to stay a little cool today, not getting much warmer than 70 degrees."

I'm amused because this is what I flew out of last night:

I'll take a cool 70 any day!
