Orienteering race 1:04:16 [3] *** 5.7 km (11:16 / km)

Today definitely went better than yesterday even though mass starts are not my favorite. I had already decided to just run my race and not worry about everyone else. This was a fine strategy for the first two loops because it was so chaotic out there anyway, it was easiest just to do your own thing. On the last loop, though, I found myself running with George Walker off and on for a few of the first controls, and steadily for the last 6. Then he threw me off by telling me that the pentultimate control (which we could see from the control before it) could be a dummy control. So, of course, I slowed down to double-check and he took off, to beat me into the finish. I'll have to be less trusting next time!

Orienteering race 31:16 [3] *** 3.03 km (10:19 / km)

Quite an inauspicious start to the 1000 Day. I can only attribute it to not being ready to race. It was like one of those O nightmares where you're not ready, but you have to go out soon. I was not focused from the beginning and it just got worse. I bobbled 2, 3 and 4; did okay on 5 - 8; and totally blew 9, a pit. I had to go out to the big field south of 9, see the 10th control and backtrack from there. I'll hope for a better day tomorrow.

Cycling (Trainer) 30:00 [2]

A busy day of work and 1000 Day chores led to an abbreviated workout on the trainer. Capped off by a dinner with StoraMoo...such fun.

And I'm "un-sicking" myself as I think I'm fine again, with no need for any hospitals.

Running (Terrain) 1:27:02 [3]
(sick)

Ran the trails at Happy Jack. It was alot of fun because I ran the same trails that I had skiied on in the winter. Not all of the ski trails are bona fide hiking/biking trails in the summer, so it was a little on trail/off trail. And, of course, a little up, a little down.

My chest cold was still a bit bothersome, but the running seems to help get the gunk out...always a good thing.

Note

I forgot to include something in my wildlife encounters yesterday...hearing the howl of a coyote. Another first and very cool.

Running (Terrain) 1:05:48 [2] **
(sick)

I just went out for an easy terrain run on Plutonic Pleasures. Went to a few control sites from an old Green course. Wildlife sightings = my first moose ever! I ran across a mama moose and her baby...it was very cool. I also started a cattle stampede, which was fine until they started coming after me! Then I had to high tail it out of there. My chest cold is still lingering, and combined with the altitude, it was a bit rough on the breathing. And breathing is kind of a crucial thing. Hopefully the dry air will help in the next few days.
