Note

Broke the truck again, this time my fault though.
I slid downhill on black ice during the snow today, and while I managed to avoid hitting the oncoming lexus, I did slam into a 12in curb at ~30mph (yes, I was probably going too fast). This brakes the truck. I was able to back up and get it onto a side street though to inspect the damage, so how bad can it be? Bent the driver side axle I beam, folded the radius arm in half, crushed the shock, bent the tie rod, broke the sway bar linkage, broke the sway bar mount, broke a cab body mount, and dented my fender some. Not bad.
I already talked to the junk yard, and got them to sell me a whole new kit for $150, I just have to go mark it in the yard (probably pull it from the same truck I just pulled the axle from, I should just buy that whole truck). I then spent the rest of the day freezing my ass, hands, and feet off outside trying to get all the broken off the truck. Gary made a tool delivery from the office to me (grinder, sawzall, pickle fork, torque wrench, big hammer) and made fun of me for a while. I was able to get the radius arm nut off, and cut the radius arm in half to free that, cut the tie rod, and got the spring free at the top, so the whole drivers side suspension is now hanging by the pivot bolt. That bolt is why I needed the grinder though, so that is tomorrow mornings project. Then ordering a pile of parts, and reassembly.

I had to get it towed the mile home, although if it had been the middle of the night, I probably would have just beat the shit out of it and gotten it there. In the middle of the day too many people question why your wheel is at a really funny angle and smoking. I've had a good amount of experience with tow truck drivers, and always find them to have interesting stories if you are willing to not be an ass, and give them a story back. This driver was telling me all about his spare subaru STI he got at an auction that had a bad transmission, but he just happened to have an extra transmission lying around his garage, so then he had two cars. Which one is the parts car then if both of them run? I also didn't think he could back the car into position in the driveway, which he took as an affront to his tow truck ability. We talked a bit about stories of doing stupid things with trailers, and then he very skillfully got it into position.

I really prefer breaking my truck in the summer, its much nicer to work outside on a sunny day with a beer and some friends, rather than a snowy cold freezing day. Friends like to work on your car when its nice out, not when its cold.
