Note
Lots of work on the truck this afternoon. I stopped by the spring shop in Waltham and had them make me some new U bolts. Then over to the used tool store to sort through some bins of sockets and build a set of deep 1/2 drive. I only needed a 3/4, but I didn't have any deep sockets in large sizes so I found enough to have a set from 1/2 - 1 1/16.
I got all the brake lines off from the splitter block, and was able to get the e-brake cables out from the backing plates without breaking them. I put a lot of force into the new deep socket with a breaker bar and got enough of the bolts broken off (I only got one off without breaking it) to get the axle free from the truck. I rolled it out and now I have two axles sitting next to the truck.
Tomorrow I have to pull the wheel cylinders and lines off the old axle, mount them on the new axle, and roll that one in there and start reconnecting everything.
At least its going to be a bit of an upgrade for the truck (besides just working). The new axle I got has a limited slip diff in it, and slightly taller gears.
