Mountain biking at Cutler
Still a bit wet from all the rain yesterday. I took the trail around the lake and south to the end of the park, then crossed over the highway and took the trail on the other side back up, which I hadn't been on before. Super fun on that side of the road.

No trails training at the fells. Alex wouldn't let me have one of the maps with the trails on it :( Running without the trails is really hard, and probably good for me, but really hard! especially once it is dark and you can't see the ground or the map anymore. Alex made a big mistake at 3 and I caught back up to her and we ran the rest of the loop together. Much more fun fighting through the dark green when there is someone else with you.

Note

Another big Jeep day.
My dad left yesterday once we had all the hard bits requiring precision tools, and lots of hands done. Today I got to do a bunch of just lifting heavy things and bolting things together. Got the front springs, shackles, axle, and u bolts mounted up. Front shocks installed. Front tie rods, pitman arm and steering stabilizer assembled, but loose waiting for alignment. Front axle outboard of the knuckles is all put together too, with backing plates and hubs. We pulled the locking hubs off of the jeepster and they went back to rochester to be rebuilt, so they are not installed yet.
On the rear axle I wrestled the drums off, and got the axle nuts off. Need to find a hub puller though, as these are tapered axles that haven't been removed in decades. That will take a big hammer and lots of force. I also discovered I had the wrong size rear shackles, so I couldn't mount the springs, but we are getting closer to a rolling chassis!

I forgot in yesterdays note to mention that we also did all the assembly of the front knuckles. This axle is a dana 27, which has closed knuckles where the axle joint runs in a oil bath instead of having a grease fitting. The king pins have roller bearings that need to have a specific preload on them, so you have to keep assembling testing and disassembling to get the correct shim pack built, then take it all back apart to lube and put the seals in. I understand why they developed the open knuckle dana 30 and used it on the 71+ jeeps.

Note

Day off from training, but spent the whole day working on the Jeep with my dad. Replaced all the U joints in the driveshafts and axles, got the frame back inside and the axles into rough position and the front springs mounted. Replaced the seals on the transmission and reassembled the bell housing. On Sat/Sun we got both pinion seals on the diffs replaced and were able to get the gear lash back to where we liked it. Lots of adventures with really big pipes and a spring scale to get the required 220ftlb of torque on the pinion nut.

Pictures coming eventually.
