Park-O 25:39 [3]

Pine Banks Park-O Finals

I had the same start time as Ben, so there was motivation right off the line to go way too fast.
0-1 Sprinted out of the start to get ahead of Ben so I could punch first.
1-2 Dropped down to the trail to run around, cut off the trail too soon and ran into the green briar.
2-3 Too high and had to loop around. Ben got ahead of me here, and I was in the back of the line punching the control
3-4 Over the top, ran down the cliff just behind Katia.
4-5 West around the pond, everyone else went east, but we all got to the hill at the same time. My feet got wetter. There was a line to punch, so I walked up the hill to recover and still punched in at the same time as I would have if I had run up.
5-6 Back through the start and into the poison ivy. Just behind Ben, but loosing ground.
6-7 Run and loose ground
7-8 Tired. Down the trail and then slog up the rather trashy steep hill. Scanned the woods for people to figure out exactly where the control was.
8-9 Straight up the hill. I could see the mapped cliff, so stayed to the left. I choose to run through the woods even though it was slow, since it was so much shorter. I was able to take a straight line and just try and take big steps while going up and made up time. Ran into Katia again when she was looking for the control one bare rock area too low.
9-10 Crash back downhill again, then pick my way back up to the next hill top.
10-11 back to the common control. Trail route
11-12 Trail run
12-13 Back out to the trail and around to the control. There was also a control on this same boulder last year.
13-14 uphill into the common control the last time. I was trying to figure out where I was relative to everyone at this point, but there were bodies heading in every direction, so it was hard to tell which loop they were on.
14-15 Long run trying not to loose ground. There wasn't anyone right behind me, so I couldn't tell how fast I had to go.
15-finish Giovanni was right behind me and I though he was going to try and catch me on a sprint into the finish. Stayed ahead for a really tired uphill run into the finish.

Super fun race with the chase start and the forking. I went out too fast at an unsustainable pace, but that got me into a crowd of people and kept me moving the whole time. Best result of the year, just 11sec behind Giovanni. Made up almost 2min on Ben around the butterfly.

This kind of race is so different from the average NEOC race in the woods where you spend 2 hours by yourself, and I think is really a perfect example of the kind of race CSU should be putting on. The barbecue afterwards made it even better.

Orienteering race 1:09:16 [3]

Ponkapoag Pond
Too hot, some small disasters.

1-2 I didn't pay enough attention on the way in, so started to panic about not having a clue what boulders I was looking at. The spur to the north saved be and I knew to go further
3-4 Decided to go straight through the marsh. It looked like just a small rocky marsh on the way in, but turned into a full swamp with lots of water and incredibly thick vegitation half way. As I was stuck trying to hop between bits of land, I looked over and saw a WCOC jersey. It turned out Gail had also decided this would be fun. The last bit required almost crawling under bushes trying to not just crawl through the mud. Afterwards Giacomo said he ran right through the swap a little bit to the east with no problem.
9-10 I ran around the north side of the hilltop, through some cool giant boulders, and then planned to cut diagonally down the hill and come in on the reentrant. Came down to far north and had to circle back around to hit the control from the bottom. I was standing 6ft from it at one point and couldn't see it.
12-13 I planned to run down the ridge, but fell off to the north. I should have just gone left or right to the trail from the start, and wasted a bunch of time trying to fight my way through the woods.

Giacomo caught up to me on the way to 15, and we both really didn't want to run into the green to get the the control. I punched just before him and then was motivated to stay ahead to the finish. There was a small unmapped trail that took you back out to the main trail, but it wiggled back and forth a lot. I tried to cut a corner, not knowing where the trail was going to go, ran my head into a tree, and came back out onto the trail saving only a few feet of running.
